Hi to all you knowledgeable people
My sister and I have been trying to trace our Irish origins on our
mother's side. Until recently we couldn't find any information to show
where the family had lived before arriving in Liverpool. We have now
found some information on the Internet to show that they lived in
Warrenpoint for a period of time just before leaving. Records show two
sons (one being our great grandfather Edward Brophy) were born there in
1871 and 1873. Their parents' names were James and Anne Brophy (nee
McGee) born approximately 1846 and 1849.
I have obtained a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate and it shows his DOB as 21 July 1873 and the place of birth to be Ballyvalley. I have also been informed that there weren't any Brophys recorded in that area at that time.
We have now drawn a blank and have no idea how to find out where James Brophy was before that. Do you have any suggestions for our search? Do you think it would be worthwhile to spend some time in the area?

Yes, I managed to find that information and have since obtained a birth certificate for Edward which shows his place of birth to be Ballyvalley (have found different spellings for that place) but nothing more.
McGee seems to be a common local name, but I don't think that James Brophy is from the area and I don't know how to find a clue as to where he came from before arriving in County Down.
Someone has suggested that he may have arrived in the area looking for work and then married a local girl.

there seems to be a lot of Bropys in Dublin , the name Francis and Edward crops up only in Dublin James is widespread through out Ireland

There is one Brophy mentioned on the Ros Davies County Down website as follows:
James Brophy, Warrenpoint, husband of Anne McGee father of Francis born 02/09/1871

The Brophy name is common in Co Laois there is a placename Ballybrophy roughly translated the town of the Brophy's.

Have you got James and Ann's marriage details? it will tell you James fathers name and you might get a few more details that will help.
There was also a daughter born to James and ann

I obviously now need to obtain a marriage certificate for James Brophy and Anne McGee but I don't have a date. Is there any way that I can obtain this information without travelling to Warrenpoint. I am assuming this is where they were married. I also think that they were Catholic, but I'm not certain. Their son Francis was born in 1871.

Hello, I am back on the case again. My great grandparents, James Brophy (born in 1846) and Ann Magee (or Anne McGee), were married at Warrenpoint Roman Catholic Church on 24th November 1870 and my sister and I are in Warrenpoint next week and hoping to find out where James came from before arriving in Warrenpoint. I have ordered their marriage certificate but I don't suppose it will arive before we leave. Not sure if it would show his place of birth anyway. Has anybody got any ideas about where we could go to find this sort of information? We are only in the area for 3 days and we would love to find some more information. They had 3 children in Warrenpoint before moving over to Liverpool, Francis, Edward and Rose Ann. We would be very grateful if there is anybody who could point us in the right direction.

Hi Smudgie, if you find a Dorothy McGee ( born c1820) married to a Thomas Boyd amongst your lot, who also moved to Liverpool, I'd be very interested!!

We now think our James Brophy came from the Laois/Kilkenny area before arriving in Warrenpoint. He married Anne on 24th November 1870, they had 3 children, and then they show on the 1881 England Census. That shows his year of birth to be 1846.
Does anybody have access to any records for the Laois/Kilkenny areas showing a James Brophy born in 1846?
We are only able to stay for 2 nights and so have decided to concentrate on the Warrenpoint connection and maybe save the Laois/Kilkenny area for another visit. By the way, can anybody tell me how to pronounce Laois?

Still banging my head against a brick wall!!! Whilst over in Warrenpoint we had a wonderful time and everybody we met was so friendly and helpful. We were able to see St Peter's Church Records showing the marriage of my great grandparents, James Brophy and Anne McGee on 24th November 1870. I had sent off for a copy of the marriage certificate from Gov-Certificates.co.uk but they have now said they can't provide it. No explanation or anything, but charged me anyway. I can't understand why it isn't available when I know the details are right. I was hoping it would give me details of their parents so that I could then move back another generation. Does anybody know if it is possible to view Irish marriage certificates anywhere without going over to Belfast?
