There is a marriage at Northbourne, Kent on 9th April 1825 for a William Griggs and a Sophia Read. It is noted in the entry that Sophia is a widow whilst William is a bachelor. This is right before the family start having children at Woodnesborough. Maybe it should be a marriage of a Sophia Fagg and a Mr Read that should be searched for (i.e. Sophia was married before).
Kind Regards

Hi All
I guess the next question may be is there a William and Sophia Griggs in the Northbourne area in the 1841 census ( or indeed anywhere else in Kent )

Just taken another look at the marriage entry at Northbourne.
The marriage that occurred on 9 April 1825 at Northbourne between William Griggs (bachelor) and Sophia Read (widow) was witnessed by a Matthew Fagg and a Mary Fagg. I think that it is a safe assumption that this is the correct marriage given the surnames of the witnesses!
I have amongst my records all occurrences of the Surname Grigg, Griggs and variants for the 1841 and 1851 census found in Kent. The only Sophia to appear on the 1841 is the Sophia mentioned above. The 1851 census has 3 Sophias, the Sophia mentioned above and her daugter born 1843. The third Sophia is also only a child (born 1845) and not related to this family at all.

Hi
That makes it 99.99% as Sophia had a brother Mathew who married Mercy Appleton in 1820, so my guess is that the other witness is in fact Mercy not Mary, The same pair were witness to another brother John's marriage in 1826.
That seems only to leave the marriage of Sophia and Mr Read to be discovered and the death of Mr Read, I take it neither of these events feature in the KFHS transcript of Northbourne PR ?
Was the marriage of Sophia & William by Banns or License ?
Many thanks for your help on a loose end that I had almost given up on !

Yes I have already checked the PR index for Northbourne. No sign of a death for a Mr read or a marriage of Sophia Fagg to Mr Read.
