Found a marriage index with district given as "Gloucester R."
Can anyone enlighten me as to what the R means please?
Thanks
Gazza

I don't think there's any such district (I haven't checked, but I've never come across it in transcribing for FreeBMD). Where did you find the reference? It's almost certainly just Gloucester.

Hi , it is on the original image on the ancestry bmd index beta.
Cheers

Is it a hand-written page, or type-set? Either way, if you're sending for it I would go with just Gloucester.

ST, it is type-set in the 1940's.
I would have expected N,S,E or W but not R ???
As you say, I may just order it anyway, but was puzzled by it.
