Hi Flag
From a parent search on IGI, there is a submitted record for the birth of a William on 19 Sept 1805 in Kilmory to a John Cook and a Elspa McKennan. I noticed also that there are 8 or so other records for the births of children in Kilmory over this period to a John Cook and an Elizabeth McLaherty. All of them are submitted records and I wondered if there was a connection.
Regards.

There is another record (extracted) for a son baptised in 1810. Given that there are so few details even for this, I suspect that the parish register is difficult to read or poorly kept. I am searching in Bute for a number of families and I'm having difficulties too.

thank you little nell and monica lesl.
given that they were married in 1788
there must be a few other children, looks like you are probably right about the parish register.

Not sure whether you have ever seen this site. Somebody posted it today. One of the main names is Houston. John H and Mary Cook and their children are included, as is John Houston's parents/siblings etc:

No more extra info on Mary Cook's parents/siblings.

not sure if you have the death of Mary Houston, but its listed as February 27th 1884 in New Cummock Ayr aged 83 and it confirms the parents as being john cook farmer and Elizabeth MacKinnion

the John Cook was listed as being son of John Cook and Catherine MacKinnon too close not to be a transcription error.. may be worth checking out the actual register entry will post the reference number later, am actually in work having a quick rootschat break lol.... and cannot access my own computer just now... will check it later and contact you again..
as for the January/February will check later too and let you know.
Best wishes

it was JANUARY ... that will teach me to stay up looking at web pages till all hours... mind and vision went ...
as for John Cook born 1815 the numbers are Frame Number 179 and GROS reference number 554/00 0001 it does say John Cook and Catherine McKinnon in parish of Kilmory.. I felt the time frame and coincidence of surnames meant it should be passed on.
I looked at the 1841 census and there are 12 John Cooks in Kilmory... oldest is 60 (as per the census transcription) a farmer.
best wishes

thank you Mo, for your very kind assistance.
I also stay up late, and try not to turn the computer on at night for that reason, the mind clouds over when it gets to midnight and after, but in saying that the computer is like a magnet and draws one to it.
as you say John Cook's birth is very similar could be another son.
