Hi,
My g.g.grandfather was John Carl Albert Voigt b. in Germany <1841>.
Father John Gotlob Voigt, occupation prison warden.
By 1867 John Carl Albert was in Bristol and married Louisa Wathen. His father was given as deceased at this time and I don't know if he ever came to England.John Carl Albert and Louisa had the following children:
Ellen Bertha Louisa:Kate Emily Maria (my g.g'mother) b.29/2/1872:Louisa:
Edward: Frank:Edith:Florence . By 1883 the family were living in the Manchester area. John Carl Albert's occupation was a Journeyman Cabinet Maker and he died in 1916. He was allowed to remain at home during WW1 due to age/infirmity. Any help /clues much appreciated. Thanks

Hi molar,
first, the obvious questions: have you checked out the "Sharing useful links: ..." and "Sharing useful tips: ..." here on "Immigrants" ?
Do you know any more "german" details, in particular, where ?. A quick look on
http://search4.geneanet.org/result.php3?source=&name=voigt&place=&recherche.x=6&recherche.y=5
gives 1224 results !
http://gedbas.genealogy.net/ is a bit slow today, so I haven't been able to look there, yet ....
I'll try again later.
Any details help would help !

GEDBAS is suddenly working today, so I tried VOIGT there and got lots of hits.
Do you know any details at all, about where in Germany ??

Sorry thats the only info I have, athough my grandma knew her Grandad, she never mentioned anything other that he was German and loved kids!
It sounds like the name is common in Germany, guess I've hit a brick wall.

Hello and welcome
I found him in the 1871 Census St. Phillip, Clifton, Gloucestershire, with wife Louisa and daughter Helen.
He gives his place of birth as Halle, Prussia, albeit wrongly transcribed as "Yalle in Prafire".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halle_%28Saale%29
On the 1891 Census he gives his birth simply as Germany and occupation "Broker Agent" widower. However his age as "52".
Will search some more during the day.

Gill, before you spend ages searching it might be worth seeing if Linda still needs the information as this thread is almost 12 years old. ;D
The title attracted me to this thread as I have ancestors from Germany with a similar name.

My heartfelt thanks ;D
I never even looked at the date.....

I certainly am still interested. I thought I would never find which part of Germany he came from. This site never ceases to amaze me,I thought I had checked all the censuses, obviously I hadn't .
Thanks for your help.

Voigt is the eastern version of the Vogt -
http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/Voigt_(Familienname) (http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/Voigt_(Familienname))
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vogt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vogt)
There is a second Halle in Prussia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halle_(Westfalen) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halle_(Westfalen)) - but Halle (Saale) is more likely.

Sorry to butt in on this thread, but the name Voigt caught my eye.
On of my wife's ancestors was Frederika Voigt, or Vogt. She was born about 1820, possibly in what was east Prussia, in the Silesia region. I have had no luck in finding any information about her or her husband, Friedrich Lindner. They came out to South Australia in 1851.
