Title: Mark Glover and Lydia Eaton, Stilton
Post by: boumboum on Saturday 29 April 06 00:12 BST (UK)
Hello

new to the list, and would really appreciate helping getting further back with my ancestors - Mark Glover b Stilton 1858 and his wife Lydia Eaton b 1864. I know they married in 1797 and had four children - but really would like to find out more about their parents.

Hoping this'll ring bells with someone out there, and thanks

Amanda

Hi Amanda

Can you clarify your dates please - 1700s or 1800s?

Dave

He must have had a thing for ladies named Lydia, for in his 1797 marriage in the Hunts Marriage Index he is  shown as a widower, and presumably what is his first marriage in 1789 in Spaldwick Mark Glover of Stilton married Lydia Pitcher.
Lydia #1 was buried at Stilton on 25 Jun 1795 age 48 and Lydia #2 on 17 Oct 1803 age 39 also at Stilton.

Mark was buried on 1 Oct 1839 aged 81 at Stilton

Can't help with the baptisms but hopefully someone may have the Stilton PR transcriptions which are available from Hunts FHS on fiche

Regards

David

Hi Amanda,

I've looked up Glover on the Stilton parish registers, microfiche.  The earliest christening in the 1700's was in 1790 so Mark must have moved to Stilton after he was born, Ruth

Hi Amanda,

I've looked for Lydia Eatons baptism in Stilton and I can't find one.  There is a John Eton son of John and Eliz 17th Jan 1762.
John Eton son of John and Eliz 4 Jul 1766.

Title: George Glover, Stilton c 1790
Post by: boumboum on Friday 19 May 06 16:11 BST (UK)
Well..embarassed now to find that I'm actually looking for George Glover, father of Henry born Stilton 1816 (as proved by marriage certificate of Henry - Mark and Lydia weren't his parents after all). Could anyone please help me? IGI not helpful - I'ld appreciate a wife for George, and anything else available from kind souls..

Thanks again

Amanda

Hi Amanda,

I've looked up Stilton baptisms and there is a Henry Glover son of Mark and Mary MERRIL, barber  24 March 1816.  I guess there must be 2 Henrys from Stilton, Ruth

Hi Amanda,

I've looked in the Huntingdonshire marriage index for 1754-1837 and there isn't a marriage for a Mark or a George Glover for the right time period.  In fact there are no George Glovers down at all, Ruth

Thanks, both of you - curiouser and curiouser! On henry's wedding certificate (he married in Wisbech) his father is given as  George Glover, hairdresser of Stilton..

Thanks, anyone else able to shed any light (and god knows, it's needed here !)

So Mark Glover, barber had a son in Stilton in 1816,  and another barber, sorry hairdresser,  in Stilton also a Glover, named George, also had a son Henry in 1816. George seems a mystery person. Seems to be a lot of coincidences as well.

I'm not sure from Ruth's message whether or not Henry was illegitimate, or whether his mother was Mary Glover nee Merril.

I wonder if there's an error, deliberate or otherwise, in the marriage entry. The problem is I don't think you can prove it. But if he was illegitimate and was brought up by his mother it's possible he wasn't too clear about his father's christian name. But I don't necessarily think that the marriage cert "proves" his father was George

Hi Amanda and David,

Re the baptism entry for Henry Glover.  As you say it's not clear as to whether Henry was illigitimate or not.  It doesn't state on the microfiche that he is illigitimate but then it is odd to state the mothers maiden name.  Plus there is also the fact that there are no other births around the same period.  I guess if his parents weren't married at the time it was easier to pop across to another country and baptise the child there.  It could be that the vicar of the church was a bit more understanding about these matters than the norm and didn't label the children as bastards as some were quick to do.  Ruth

Hi Amanda and David,

I've looked further back in the baptisms for Stilton and I found:
2 Nov 1806  Louisa Glover baseborn daug of Mark and Mary MERRYL, publickly
in 1801 5 Nov there is William Glover son of Mark and Lydia, privately
1800 22nd July,  William Glover son of Mark and Lydia, privately.

in 1839 Oct 1  Mark Glover was buried, age 81
in 1803 Oct 17  Lydia Glover was buried, age 39, otp
in 1800 Oct 18, William Glover buried, inf otp

There is a Mary Merrill buried on 11 March 1856, age 73, so it doesn't look like she ever married.  Ruth

I have a gut feeling that Mark, barber = George, hairdresser!

But it will probably take a lot of negative research and even then it won't prove it conclusively:
- any burials/marriages of another Henry who could have been the son of Mark
- any other census entries for a Henry
- any burials/census entries for George

To start the ball rolling there are no burials of a Henry in Hunts pre 1837. (there is a burial of Henry age 73 at Wisbech on 23 Dec 1888). Nor is there a burial of a George in Hunts or Cambs pre 1837

Mary Merril lived in Stilton in 1851 where she was described as unmarried, so I think you are right about her Ruth

I've checked the Stilton parish records and the only burials in the 1800's for Glover are the 3 that I have already given.  With regards marriages there is one in 1797 and then a big jump to 1927.  The last christening is the one already given for Henry in 1816.  Ruth
