Title: Robert Thomas COLEMAN - 1820 birth around Burwash

I am looking for information on an enigmatic character in my family tree.

He is believed to have been born 1820 in Burwash Sussex

He went by either Robert or Thomas so may have been christened one of the 2 names.

He is believed to have come to Australia some time in 1841.

It would be appreciated if anyone could shed some light on his birth/parents or could locate him on the 1841 census.

Can't seem to find any others that fit with the date. Do you have any other details?

I seems strange that Thomas Coleman senior would give his fourth born son his name Thomas.

It may be possible that he was born earlier and christened at a later date. Or he may have forgotten his birthdate.

i found this on the 1881 census
Thomas Colman abt 1829 Burwash, Sussex, England Head  Burwash  Sussex 

do you think it is possible that Robert Thomas may have been born around 1820 but not listed?

Afternoon J Dickens. I have just started researching the Coleman family tree which has lead me to the Burwash area. The name Thomas appears a number of times in my research. The Thomas you are looking for may actually have been the father (also a Thomas)  of the one referred to. Did you manage to get any further with your search as descendants of his also went to Australia and I am looking to trace them.

Any advice greatly appreciated from any others reading this post from a newbie of tracing relatives that went to Australia around 1912 ish I think? Thanks

Unfortunately I have made no further progress with this line of the family tree.
This seems quite elusive. Details that I do now:
- most of the children birth certs verify Burwash as place of birth
- believed to have arrived in NSW in the early 1840 according to death cert
- no evidence of being a convict.
