Hi,
Can someone tell me where the Four Ashes Inn is. I have a death certificate for my Great grandfather and it said that he died at the Four Ashes Inn Stafford Street Wolverhampton.
My Auntie is out from England and I asked her about it and she said it is not on Stafford Street but my dad and brother said it was.
So can someone tell me where the Four Ashes Inn is or was. My great grandfather did in 1955.
Thanks very much Jacquie.

Hi Jacquie Genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/dir/staffspubs1830 says there was a four ashes in stafford street you could try wolverhampton archives they will have something on the pub sorry don't know if its still there
-
This appears to be the current address
STATION DRIVE FOUR ASHES WOLVERHAMPTON WV10 but I think I saw somewhere that this inn was previously called something else - so perhaps the original went & the name was reused. Try an internet search - there are lots of hits

Thank you both very much.
I did do a search for it and found lots for the one on Station Street. I did a map search and Station Street comes off Stafford Road or the other way round so maybe it is near the corner of the two street.
Megabelly thank you for reminding me about Genuki site I had forgotten about that site.
Once again thank you both.
Regards Jacquie.

hi Jacqui.
Have just read your request and wondered if this is the Four Ashes Pub that you are looking for.
It is at Four Ashes near to Coven on the Wolverhampton to Stafford road.. the A449.
The Pub is called The Four Ashes...it sits right on the main raod.
I am intersted loosely in that pub as my Great Grandfather Edwin Beesley was the Publican there. or at least so I think. Is this any help??
Regards
Mrs Noah.

I don't think that this will be of much interest to you guys but the 1871 entry for Four Ashes Inn, 36 Stafford Street has a family headed by William and Frances Matthew and sister in law Martha Oaks.
I'll post the whole think if any one wants it RG10-2937/31
I tried looking for the other streets mentioned at the start of that census section (Charles Street, Carp Street, Chicken Lane) and could not find them so I wonder if it has been redeveloped? Still, if you can get a map ypu should be able to find no 36. The White Hart was at 41 if that helps and Brittanica at 51.

Thank you Mrs Noah, but I am not sure if it is near Coven. The death certificate only reads died at Four Ashes Inn Stafford Street Wolverhampton, no number is given. His home address was given as 104 Finchfield Lane Wolverhampton. Don't know if that is near Stafford Street.
Thank you anyway regards Jacquie.

On the site above there is a list of closed pubs, including Four Ashes, Charles Street. I wonder if that was yours.

Thanks Gardener,
I've been to that site. I think they may have put the wrong address on the death certificate.

The Four Ashes Inn, 36 Stafford Street is the first household in Enumeration District 9 and here is what the notes say at the beginning of that enumeration district:
"Part of the township of Wolverhampton namely Stafford Street west side from Charles Street to Red Lane, Cannock Road both sides to the boundaries of the township; that is on the North side to the stream, and on the South side from, but not including the "Junction Inn" to the Grand Junction Railway; also Chicken Lane and Carp Street All courts, Alleys and entries included, except entry from Stafford Street to Middle Row (called B??ked Lane"
So I think that Charles Street was a side street off Stafford Street and the Four Ashes stood on the corner. The household at 51 Stafford Street (Brittania Inn) is the last on Stafford Street, next comes Lower Stafford Street.
If you go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
and search for co-ordinate 391456,299411
That will get you a map centred on the "dogleg" where Stafford Street and Lower Stafford Street meet. Your pub must have been somewhere south of the dogleg, on the west side of the street, about 8 buildings down. Hope this is a help.

Thank you so much Gardener.

Hi Jackie,
Not sure if you're accessing this site/post, but I'm researching the Matthews family mentioned in an earlier reply and have come across the following blog which, in a post entitled 'The ghost of St. Mary's lingers on' (!!) includes a map showing Charles Street where the Four Ashes pub was located and a photo of the pub in the 1950s.
http://lostwolverhampton.blogspot.com/
Apparently it is was just next to what is now the art building of the University of Wolverhampton on the corner of Stafford Street and St. Peter's Ring Road, opposite a garage (you can see in the photo) which is now 'Kwik Fit'.
Hope this helps. Take care...Helen
PS. This means the death certificate would have been correct. ;)

I think it could be 'The Four Ashes' which is on the Stafford Road leading into Wolverhampton, it is on an ancient crossroads, Brewood and Coven. Here is a link:-

No, its definitely the one in the town centre - the other pub is on Stafford Road not Stafford Street and the Coven one is actually on Station Drive. Confusing I know with two parcels of land and the two pubs on them with the same name, but at the time the Coven one would not have been really seen as part of Wolverhampton.
Sadly, as with so many important landmarks within Wolverhampton, all were wiped out when the dreaded ringroad (which makes my life hell on a daily basis!) was constructed in the 1960s and, with respect to that particular area, the uni's art block was built in the 1970s, including my great-grandfather's home near the Molineux.
I was really pleased to find to Billy Howe's blog - a real gem for us local historians! :)
Best regards...Helen

Thank you both very much for your help. It was really nice looking at the link site. The death certificate definatley said Four Ashes Inn Stafford Street Wolverhampton.

Hi, have you tried an internet search?
Several web sites give its location as Station Drive, for example:
