What gold rushes were starting up in the late 1870's -- can anyone tell me please?
The immigrant I'm looking for – Cornthwaite John HECTOR – might have gone to the USA looking for gold, as he was last heard of doing just that in Hokitika, New Zealand in the 1860s.
Would there be any way of checking entry point records, or census records in the gold prospecting areas?
Thank you,
Jamie

http://www.melbourneflorida.org/info/history.htm - this isn't possibly him in FL, is it?
1880 census has, in Brevard County, FL:
C. J. Hector, single, 45, b. England, parents b. England

Thank you Jorose. Yes, that is him. The problem is in knowing exactly when he arrived in the USA, though the consensus of opinion is that it was in, or before 1878.
And, how he arrived (it would have had to be by ship, of course) and where he made landfall.
As he went to the goldfields in New Zealand in 1867-ish it seemed to me that he might have moved on to the goldfields in America, or Canada.
The tale he told to the Floridians at the time was that he'd arrived in search of his stepfather, a Dr. Isles, but he was so creative with the truth in the stories he told people, that this is hard to establish.
Again, thank you,
Jamie :)

Dear Jamie

i was interested in your comment about him being a creative story teller, it seems to be a trait that has come down the family.

So if you google George Nelson Hector (Cornthhwaite J Hector) Australia & Florida - it will take you to some messages. Second one down should give the link.
