Thanks Manchester Rambler :)
That's my lot
I've gone back to the 1881 and found Thomas still at home with hs parents William and Ann Spare.
William is a publican of the Holly Bush pub in Kingsbury Warwickshire, and was born in Baddesley Warwickshire abt.1817. (There is another brother not on the 1881 - William who was also born in Yorkshire in 1854).
I know William and Ann were in Cornwall during the 1851 census and I know there are a lot of Spares in Cornwall so I suspect my lot may have originated there.
One other thing - Ann cannot decide where she was born - she has said Carlisle, Ireland and Dudson in Cornwall on three different census!! ???.
The thing is I can't find any reference to William's birth in the IGI - born about 1817 - does anyone have any ideas how I can get further back?
Thanks

I actually went to Hurley the other week and found that the Holly Bush pub is actually in Hurley which is in the district of Kingsbury. I've found that the greatest concentration of the name Spare in the 1881 census is around Atherstone/Coventry. In the 1881 census the other greatest concentration of Spares is in Cornwall. there must be a link, I just haven't found it.
Is anyone else out there looking for Spares?

Hi, my Great Grandmother was a Mary Spare born 1853, I have a second cousin who is the daughter of Hannah Spare who married Herbert Bragg. I will endeavour to find more about the Spares from her as her research goes back to 1200 whilst I'm only back to 1511..
cheers

Hi Jelicoe,
Thanks for picking this up - I think I last posted on the Spares four years ago.
I'd be interested to know more about your Spare connection as Mary A. Spare, who was born in 1853 in Hurley was my Great Grandfather ( b.1856) Thomas's sister. Were Mary's parents William, b. 1818 and Ann Shaw b. 1829?
If we are from the same family I'd love to find out more - I haven't got back as far as 1511, never mind 1200!
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Tessy, short answer is yes one and the same. Mary Ann Spare married George Bragg Builder and Fire Chief (Solihull) at St Bartholomew Church 24 December 1870. They had 14 Children of which Sydney(1886) was my Grandfather. Herbert Bragg (1892) married a cousin Hannah Spare daughter of Charles and Mary (Wright-Spare). Out of Interest the wrought -Iron gates from Hurley Hall with W.W cast in them went to the states.

Hi Mike,
I've sent you a personal message on here - just thought you as you appear to be new to the boards you may not have picked it up.
