I have a query which may sound a bit dumb!!
I have been searching for a Martha Herivel born 1835 in the 1841 census for Guernsey. Found her in 1851 living with a family as a boarder.
Now I have searched and searched the 1841 and she is nowhere to be found, so I thought I would look for the family that she is boarding with in 1851. Bingo, they have a 6 year old Patty Herivel living with them.
Now could Patty be Martha???
If anyone can help I would be grateful.

I'd have thought that Patty was short for Patricia
but it might have been mistranscibed from Matty? Have you seen the original?

How strange - it does seem to be more than a concidence, and the name is definitely "Patty" on the census page!
Presumably she was recorded as plain "Martha" in later documents?
Is it possible that her full name was "Martha Patricia Herivel"?
Another possibility is that the enumerator made a mistake when copying details from the household schedule.

Thanks for your replies, I think it must be one and the same person, it is most definitely Patty in 1841 and Martha in 1851.
As far as I know she was just Martha, I have her baptism records and no other names are on it.
Now I guess I need to find out what happened to her parents and why she wasnt with them!
Once again thank you

It might be something as simple as that she was known as Patty when she was a little girl - a pet name or something - and started to use her real name when she got older! I can think of a few people who that applies to now, I'm sure that they must have done the same sorts of things in 1841.

Thanks Veron, I really am convinced it is her, just needed some more opinions.
Research in Guernsey is hard enough without them changing their names!!!!

Hi
I was interested in your post on Patty Herivel as I also spotted her in the 1841 census and cannot find out anything more about her or where she fits into the wider Herivel family!
Best wishes

Hi
As far as I can see Patty listed in the 1841 census is indeed Martha Herivel born 1835 to Pierre Herivel and Elizabeth Queripel.
I found Patty when searching for Martha, she was living with the Mauger family in 1841.
In 1851 she is with the same family listed as servant, name transcribed as Harinet. Original image the name is not too clear.
In 1861 she appears as married to a James Lihou. James died 1869 and Martha died in 1875.
Martha is my husbands Great Great Grandmother.

According to a book on names that I have here, Mattie (matty) and Pattie (Patty) were the earliest pet forms of Martha.
Something else I have learned this week! :)

Thanks Nell that really helps. I felt she was the right person, basically because I have trawled the census and she just wasnt there as Martha!!

Hi Nicky
I have a bit of information on the Pierre Herivel and Elizabeth Queripel line. Elizabeth died in 1836 but I have no death date for Pierre. One thing that is puzzling with this family is that I have 3 other children listed:
Eliza b abt 1815 who married James Woolcock Whicker in 1835 and emigrated to South Australia in 1854
James b abt 1816 and died in 1835
Charlotte b abt 1818 and married John Berry and then there's around an 18 year gap until Marthe! I have always wondered whether Marthe was the child of Eliza or Charlotte rather than Elizabeth and Pierre.
Best wishes
