Thanks for the information - that is great!
Is there anyway that anyone can also help me find a marriage at all? So far my searching has drawn a blank.
i am looking for a marriage between:
James William Harding and Harriet Mary Fowler (formerly Sharp)
The wedding would have taken place in Islington or there abouts sometime during or after (but not before) 1901.
If anyone can help with this i would be very grateful!
Thanks again

Hi Lisa
Have you checked the Ancestry BMD (http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx) images?
Choose the Marriages from the "Compete Images". If you find a James Harding, make a note of the registration district and the volume and page number. Then search for a Harriet Fowler in the same quarter. If you find her with the same volume/page numbers, you've won! After about 1912 it gets easier because each entry includes the spouse's name.
Good luck!
:)

Ho Koromo
I have tried this but so far have had no luck.
I am not really sure if they did ever marry but a relative seems to think that they did and said that they saw a marriage certificate!
I am wondering if the name has been spelled funny as Harriet is one name that always seems to get messed up.
Ill keep trying and maybe one day something will turn up. Until then i am going to have diffuclty checking that the James William Harding is defintely the right one!

There is no death registration for a John Harding in 1867 in Chesham (Amersham registration district). The dates you give for him would make him 113 on his death.
Other than some marriages which were extracted from Chesham parish registers and published and then placed from that source on the IGI, the IGI has no coverage of Chesham parish registers which were held at the church and not released to the record office. Consequently you had to visit the church itself until recently (the registers have now been photocopied and the photocopies handed to the record office) to see details. Therefore most of what is on the IGI is pretty much guesswork for Chesham. So if the IGI entry doesn't say it is extracted from the records themselves, but it is submitted by a church member, you have to treat it with extreme caution. e.g.
John Harding
Birth: 1754 Chesham, Buckingham
Spouse: Hannah Wilton
Marriage: 28 JAN 1779
Record submitted by a member of the LDS Church
The source for this record being
Endowments for the dead, 1956-1970; baptisms for the dead, 1956-1970 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Los Angeles Temple
1851 census HO107 1713 folio 248
Adelaide Street St Albans St Peter Hertfordshire
William Harding 24 St Albans, Hertfordshire, Head Married Basket maker
Susan Harding 21 Warwickshire, Wife Married
1861 census RG9 830 folio 3
Kent's Yard St Alban Hertfordshire
Susan Harding 30 St Albans, Hertfordshire, Head Married Brazilian Hat maker
William Harding 5 St Albans, Hertfordshire, Son
Charles Harding 1 St Albans, Hertfordshire, Son
I can't see William on the 1861 census.
1891 census RG12 149 folio 27
41 Cornwallis Road Islington London
James W Harding 35 St Albans Head Married Cooper
Margaret Harding 34 ST George in the East, London, Wife Married
James W Harding 10 Islington, London, Son
1871 census RG10 1332 folio 44
Grammar School Wood Street Chipping Barnet Middlesex
James W Harding 15 St Albans, Hertfordshire, Pupil

Two thoughts
If you use freeebmd when you click on the reference number the list of people on the same page is shown. Freemd is about 90% transcribed prior to 1910 now.
Valda has just beaten me on my second comment about John being 113

hi, i have a william harding who married dorothy or dorothea christmas. his parents were william harding and susanna horwood. all chesham linked. any connection? i think BUT have no proof that this latter william might have been brothers with james harding who married mary darvell and john harding who married hannah. They seem to have all been linked to BASKETMAKERS in some way.

Look to see if my line of Darvell (Darvill) was married to Thomas Harding the martyr of Chesham. My father is Arthur John Darvill (1930) - His father was Frederick John Darvill (Baker)1899-1987 was married to Bernice Nutter. His father Fredrick Darville (Baker) 1874-1952 was married to Lizzie Gomm. His father Fredrick Darvill (Carpenter) 1853-1891 was married to Elizabeth. His father William Darvill (Wheelwright) 1927-1860 was married to Elenor. His father Jacob Darvill (Farmer) 1796-1854 was married twice (Mary & Elizabeth). That's where I get stuck, Anyone researching this line? I was once told we were related to Thomas Harding of Chesham, but I can't get back far enough to see if he might have been married to a Darvill or Darvell. I know Thomas' wife's first name was Alice. Any info would be appreciated from this Darvill line. Thank you! Nancy Ann Darvill Lee (aka Kapua)
