James BAXTER, b 1828 in Heaton, son of William and Mary married Elizabeth SUTCLIFFE 21/5/1849 in Bradford. Elizabeth was born in BARNOLDSWICK.
Does anyone have any info on Elizabeth?
Thanks

HI Abbey
Do you have the marriage cert then?
If so what name is shown for the father of Elizabeth Sutcliffe?

Unfortunately there is no father listed for Elizabeth on the marriage certificate. The witnesses to the marriage are William Holmes and Ephraim Smith and the marriage is at Bradford Parish Church. James is listed as a shoemaker, son of William, a warehouseman but that is all the info I have.

HI
Have nothing concrete on Elizabeth, but the strange thing is this in the 1851 census (as it was the nearest census to the marriage of you two people)
I found these two people note their occupation
Living respectivley at 44 & 45 Stott Hill, Bradford
Ephraim Smith bn abt 1826 Bradford Occ- Sexton of Parish Church employing one man
Mary Smith wife of above bn as above
Mary Smith Mother of Ephraim Widow age about 55
Elizabeth Smith Sister of Ephraim age about 28
And right next door to him
William Holmes age about 35 bn Howarth Occ Parish Clerk
Ellen his wife age about 34 in Bradford
James son of above 10 born Wilsden
Uncanny or what I bet these two were the witnesses more so in an official capacity.
Just to add in the 1841 census Ephraims father Joseph was also Parish Sexton....

I think you're right about the 'official' witnesses. Perhaps the parents didn't approve of the marriage? Not quite sure where to try next for Elizabeth. Any thoughts?

HI
There is in the 1841 census in the West End of Bradford two possibly sisters shown in the same house hold as the people listeed below their names
Elizabeth Sutcliffe bn abt 1828
Mary Sutcliffe bn at 1831
Samuel Smith bn 1797
Mary Smith bn 1801
All say yes to being bn in Cty
And remeber boundaries do change for Counties as teh decades past by
But that is the closest and would be a reason why no father name on marriage cert.
