Title: Henry (Harry) MORTIMER - Photographer Llanwrtyd
Post by: warwickb on Friday 21 April 06 09:55 BST (UK)
Interested in any information on Harry Aylmer MORTIMER known as Henry. He was my gg grandfather.

He was b 1832 British Subject in France (anyone know how to research where?)
He does not appear in 1851C in England or Wales as far as I can find .
He does appear in 1861C as Henry MORTIME, Lodger unm age 42(!), Artisan, Photographist, born France. Living Sarcens Head (Inn) High St, Llansannan Denbighshire.
He obviously meets his wife to be here: Margaret REES b1837 Garthbeibio, Montgomeryshire as she is found in the 1861C in Llansannan as Margared REES working as a servant.
Their children are born: Harry Aylmer (jnr) 1862 Llanfyllin, Margaret Jane 1865 Builth, Frederick William 1867, Flora Susannah 1869, Hugh Rees 1872, Percival Waliston 1873, Catherine Ada 1875,  Evan Whitrich 1876, and Mary Gertrude 1878. The latter 8 children are born at Llanwrtyd / Breconshire. Evan is noted as being born at "London House", Llanwrtyd.
Margaret had sister Jane who m Evan MORRIS farmer of Garthbeibio. Her parents were Hugh and Jane REES of Garthbeibio.

He is recorded in Slater's Directory, 1868 for Photographers.

SOUTH WALES

Llanwrtyd (Wells), South Wales.
Henry Mortimer, Llanwrtyd.

He dies in 1906 in Builth, Dec Qtr.

I can not find any record of Henry and Margaret marrying.
Nor can I trace Harry back to any Mortimer family due to birth in France as do not know where to start - would be interested in family connections.
Would also be interested in sighting any photographs taken by him

Hello Warwick,
I saw your data on The photogragher H.A Mortimer and wondered if you ever got a reply or found his family link?

I ask as I recently bought a very old photo album from the UK and on the back of one of the photos was his photograghy business name.
Now some of the photos in the album - this family have the name REES in it too. I am curious as to whether he was related to them or just a coincidence..
And plus I  have the surname Mortimer in my family tree.
hope you are still at this address.......judy from Aust.

That is very very interesting and I trust teh album is intact.

Harry Alymer MORTIMER is my GG grandfather (my Grandmother was a Mortimer). His wife is Margaret REES and so yes they will be family photo's which I would love to sight. I spent a whole day searching for family in Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales when I was there in 2007.

I have the Mortimer Family tree in my family traced back to HA MORTIMER's birth in 1832 as a British Subject in France but it stops there and can not track his parents!  Nor can I find some of the descendants.

If you email me back on "(*)" we can compare notes on family trees etc....

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Judybal,
I do not know if you have had an answer yet, but if not then the connection is easy.
Harry Mortimer married Margaret Rees d of Hugh Rees 1797-1861 of Garthbeibio. Hugh is the brother of my GGG Gf Evan Rees b1773. Obviously if you have pictures of Rees' by H Mortimer then I wonder if any first names are given or any other information.

Regards

Andy

Hi there

I'm in the middle of transcribing marriages for Everton and I think I have Harry Aylmer Mortimer Junior.

Marrying a Emily Harrison.

Is this info any use to you at all - or do you already know it?

Not sure if you are still on the site, but I am selling a photo album from 1896. The photographs in there were taken by H Mortimer and research lead me to believe this might have been your great grandfather.

Let me know if you would like the link to the ebay listing.

Very good photographs leading me to this they were professional.

Brad

Hi

Glad to get a response. Whenever I sell something like this I always like to see if I can find someone interested in the history and if I can trace the descendants, reunite the item with someone who would value it personally.

If nothing else, you can have a look and see if my research is correct. I have had a lot of enquiries about this item as it would seem the photographer is well respected.

The item is still for sale at -

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162832404250?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Kind regards

Brad

Thanks Brad
Most interesting album.

It's not clear that these are definitely H A Mortimer photos. In 1896 he would have been 64 and the men in one of the photo's which appear to be his travelling companions appear younger.
That said his partner (wife - no evidence of being married) possibly dies in 1894.
H A Mortimer senior is still with 4 children in the 1891 census in Wales , the younger daughter born in 1878.

Other thoughts :
1. he practiced his photography business as H Mortimer & Sons for a while.....
2. his older son was also H A Mortimer and would have been 34 in 1896 - but in 1895 he was a Hotel Manager and also married that year in Liverpool so not likely to be photographer of these photos.
3. H A Mortimer snr claimed he was born in France in 1832 as a British Subject but have never been able to track that. So he had a connection to France.

So a question - is H A Mortimer's stamp on the back of the photo's - other photo's I have seen have that.

Regards
Warwick

Hi again
Another question pertaining to the H Mortimer photographs.
Do you know the providence of the album?
Where H A Mortimer's family originated from is not known so wondering what his connection is with the name W H Henshaw on the album and where Henshaw was from. Did it come through an estate?
