Hi
I'd be grateful if someone with access to the 1861 census could look up the Cantle family living in Maesteg (Llangynwyd Higher). Father Joseph Cantle, mother Hannah, children - William, Amelia and Letitia. It may be spelt incorrectly as Cantell or Cantel.
Thanks
Helen

It looks as though Joseph died prior to 1861:

Jen
Thank you so much thats lovely of you.
I mentioned elsewhere on this site (probably misfiled by me) that Amelia had a child called John in 1863 (my great grandfather). He appears on a later census but with the surname Cantle.
Local church records say Amelia is the mother but the father isnt named. I dont understand why John hasnt taken the surname of his father. He wasnt the only child - there was also a Britannia and Stephen and I find it hard to believe Amelia would have had three children out of wedlock. Its an important point to me because if she did marry I shouldnt be a Cantle at all!.
I cant find John's birth records so not sure where to go next. Are there any other look up tables that could help trace John, his father's details or Amelia's marriage? I've tried the usual locations but am no expert in this area.
PS - John appears in the 1871 census with his family but disappears in the 1881 census only to materialise again in 1894 when he marries Alice Hawker.

I know it is not really what you want to here :-[ but going by what you say, it does sound like those 3 children born after 1861 were born out of wedlock. If she is listed as a Widow in 1861 it would be pretty hard for her to conceive :-\ . I would try and get hold of Joseph Cantle's death certificate to make sure that he did actually die (and they were not simply estranged).
I would say though that if the children do not have fathers listed on their certificates the children have probably taken their mothers married name so it sounds like they were legitimate but actually they were not.
.............I will have a dig about over the next few minutes and see if I can come up with anything to post here on this message.

Found a death for a Letitia Cantle (free bmd):
Deaths Mar 1895
Cantle Letitia 56 Bridgend 11a 542
These were the only death I could find (free bmd):
Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
Deaths Mar 1840
CANTLE Joseph Bristol 11 147
Deaths Dec 1850
CANTLE Joseph Bristol 11 142
Deaths Jun 1858
Cantle Joseph Keynsham 5c 506
This last one is odd though, I came across a death of a Hannah Cantle also in Keynsham, her birthyear would be out though (this one was born around c. 1787)
Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
Deaths Mar 1874
CANTLE Hannah 87 Keynsham 5c 549
The district Keynsham spans the boundaries of the counties of Gloucestershire and Somerset, If I am correct Hannah was born in the Gloucestershire region and Joseph was not born in Glamorgan, so his orgins may also be in Gloucestershire

Thanks Jen for all the feedback. Yes Joseph and Hannah were born in Bitton.
I believe Hannah died in 1878 in Maesteg as she shows up under Ancestry.com and that makes sense as she disappears off the census before 1881.
The Keynsham one for Joseph looks interesting and I think I'll get that death certificate just to know one way or the other.
Thanks for your help - its nice at times just to log my thoughts somewhere and get feedback.
