Title: George Percy Seymour - death or 1911 census
Post by: eramophla on Saturday 15 April 06 08:08 BST (UK)
I am trying to locate a George percy Seymour in Canada. He was born in 1879 in Bristol, Gloucester, England to Edward & Caroline Seymour (nee Teague). He married in December Q 1900 in Bristol to Edith Emma Barrett (sometimes known as Alice). It is beleived that they moved to Canada had 7 children. They could possibly be located in the 1911 census. George is believed to have died on 29.3.1937, so his death may also be able to be located.

Any assistance anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

You can check out the 1911 census online as there are several sites indexing it.  The following have ongoing projects online:

http://allcensusrecords.com/canada/  Choose 1911

http://automatedgenealogy.com/

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ongenpro/census/

The images for the 1911 census are also online at Library & Archives Canada. They are not searchable by surname, only by geographic location. Kind of like going to a library or Family History Centre and scrolling through microfilm, but you get to do it from the comfort of your computer chair  :)

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/1911/index-e.html

As for the death, you don't say where - but if it was Ontario, Ontario deaths are only available as 'self-serve' up to 1932. For any years after that, you must send for a search (for a fee) from Office of The Registrar General in Thunder Bay (Ontario) See the pathfinder for help at

Do you know when George was born...the 1911 census in Canada shows only 1 george seymour born England in 1879, in October...

this george is listed in British Columbia, arrived in 1907, farmer..but showing as single....

will keep looking around for you,  I'll try some spelling variations as well...  ( I am a seymour myself and know just how often it is mis-spelled !!)

Hi Cheryl,

He was born on 2?/4/1879 in Bristol, Gloucestershire. Our family notes record him as having 7 children, but I do not know their names.

Perhaps lionmands can confirm this information:

In the Free BMD there is a marriage for a George Percy Seymour in Avon, Gloucestershire which was registered in the 4th quarter of 1900 (vol 6a, page 443). Also on the same page was Alice Maud Barratt.

On the 1916 census for Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta there is the following family in Selkirk, Manitoba:

George Seymour, head, 38, born England, immigrated 1908, farmer
Alice Seymour, wife, 37, born England, immigrated 1909
Edwin Seymour, son, 13, born England, immigrated 1909
Ernest Seymour, son, 11, born England, immigrated 1909
John Seymour, son, 9, born England, immigrated 1909
Ivy Seymour, daughter, 7, born England, immigrated 1909
Doris Seymour, daughter, 5, born Manitoba
Lily Seymour, daughter, 3, born Manitoba
Thomas Seymour, son, 1, born Manitoba

I can't find them on the 1911 Canada census. I think Ivy was actually born in Canada. I have found Alice with Edwin, Ernest and John on the passenger list of the Empress of Britain which arrived in St John, New Brunswick on 9 Apr 1908. Their destination is listed as Winnipeg. George arrived in Montreal on the Lake Manitoba on 9 May 1907. It says he was a plumber and born in Gloucester and his destination was Winnipeg. You can view the passenger lists at Library and Archives Canada:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger/001045-130-e.html
It is searchable by ship, not passenger name so you'll have to scroll through the passenger list to find the entries.

There is a short announcement regarding his funeral in the Winnipeg Free Press dated 1 Apr 1937. It indicates he was 58, died at St. Boniface Hospital. The address he was living at was on Erin Street in Winnipeg which appears to have been the home of his brother, John Charles Seymour.

Kim your update on the request should have been posted on this thread, not elsewhere!...then someone who lives in Winnipeg might have done a local lookup to find more information for you.
http://www.cousinconnect.com/d/a/125249  There doesn't seem to be a Reginald listed anywhere?
