Hi there,
My GG Grandmother, Sarah Mason Smith was born in Halifax in 1844 (according to the 1851 & 1861 Census). Her parents were John Smith & Dinah.
I have some information that says she was born 15 April 1844. The same info says her husband was born on 29 SEP 1841. This has come from someone in the family but I don't know who, (long story). I have received her husbands birth certificate this morning which confirms that his date of birth is the same as the information I have (29 SEP 1841) so I am assuming Sarah's DOB is correct. I have spent ages looking through the SCHI for Smith and cannot find her anywhere.
My question is, if I wrote to the Registrar for Halifax and gave her/him the information I have, would they do a search for me ???
Thank you, Vanda

Q1) Just what is the "SCHI"?
Q2) Have you confirmed the marriage of her parents BEFORE her birth?

Hi PB,
The SCHI is the St Catherines House Index (what the freeBMD is taken from).
I haven't confirmed the marriage of her parents because I don't know her mother's maiden name. I am pressuming the date of birth I was given, was possibly from a family bible ???
I have her fathers name from her marriage certificate and her mothers name from the 1851 & 1861 census. :)
Hope that helps - best wishes Vanda

Hi,
If you have a birth date then the local Registrar Office will usually do a search for it as they are all together. Unlike marriages where they are in various volumes.
There is a John Smith and Dinah Fieldhouse that appear on the same page of marriages in June Qtr. 1843 for Halifax which may be yours.
I too was thinking on the same lines as PB, that maybe the Mason indicated Sarah was born a Mason and not a Smith, so it may be worth mentioning this if you ask for a search.

Mo

Thanks Mo,
I get it now, you think she may have been born out of wedlock. Then she may be registered in the name of Sarah Mason :-\
This is the family on the 1851 census...
1851 Census
7 Buckley Street, Manchester
James Smith - head mar 28 - Cabinet Maker - Yorks Halifax
Diena Smith - wife mar 32 - Yorks Halifax
Sarah Mason Smith - daur 7 - Yorks Halifax
Mary Ellen Smith - daur 5 - Yorks Halifax
Martha Smith - daur 3 - Yorks Halifax
Hannah Lassay Smith - daur 7mths - Lancashire
I think what I may do is send for her sisters birth certificate - Hannah Lassay Smith and then I will write to the registrar in Halifax about Sarah Mason Smith as I would really love her birth certificate with her being my GG Grandmother.
OK, thanks for listening and I appreciate your thoughts on the matter :)
Best wishes Vanda
