anyone else had trouble with these new annoying adverts that appear for last couple of days? They have a clickable "x" close icon but do not close. My security is fully enable & pop up blocker fully set but they still appear.
Is it something to do with macromedia flash player or something? ???
-
Hi Gazza,
Yes I had the same this morning, I gave up in the end and came off. I have no idea whats going on.
Janet.
-
Not just me then Janet. It is really spoiling the site :(
-
Hi
I have just been using GR and haven't come across any adds at all.
Anne
-
They have been annoying me too. If you ever go to a page and the ad gets in the way, refresh the page by pressing F5 or by clicking the button at the top and then click on the link before the ad loads up.
Andrew
-
Yes they are driving me up the wall!!
-
just been on
and no probs :) :D :)
-

jericho
-
I havent seen them either

I guess they got so many complaints and got rid of them...
Andrew

Yes, seems to be ok now ,thank goodness!!

Its a form of non malicious adware according to my geek of a husband. I got shot of the ads myself by doing a spyware and adware scan. They are usually "caught" via another website and i imagine most of us use similar sites so thats probably why we had them. Not to panic though says the geek, just scan your computer if they appear again!
;)

If you havent got a spyware removal program, go to the Microsoft download page & install Windows Defender. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
It's only the beta version, but a great bit of free software from Bill Gates & co.

And to add to the spyware removal program above, here is an adware program that most of you will already have. Its free and it works a treat. Its easy to install and to top it off it comes from a site that i have never known a virus to come from

Adaware se personal
I hate adware!!

I have that already, it's great :)

GR seem to use a tracker called Avenue A. Spybot disabled it. I then could not use GR site at all. I had to reneable it to use the site which makes me concerned. Any ideas?
-
Ok well for a start that was not picked up via Genes Reunited as the type you are talking about is Malware not just spyware. Obviously it left something behind on your computer after the spybot(search and desroy??) disabled it. Usually i use a spyware program, adware program and do a virus check at the same time. If it finds anything i then use a registry mechanic to repair any left behind problems. You can buy this off the net from various places for about twenty pound but its worth it. Basically before my husband joined the RAF he used to be a computer tech and when people had computer probs thats what he installed to get shot of all the bugs, uninstalled it and hey prseto they were done.
There is no reason why a Tracking cookie could disable you from using the site. Try spyware check again, an adware scan and virus scan too. If anything shows up, get shot of it and then re start your computer before doing anything else. Repeat as above once restarted to make sure all problems are not replicating themselves on restart.
Let me know how you get on!
Karren
Ok. just been on GR and then did two scans, the Malware you mentioned didnt show up so scan EVERYTHING ASAP!!!!!

Hope this info will be of some use!

the main thing to remember: gr is a great site and to most of us a good friend. such deviant minds are the bane of the internet and this is of no fault of gr. i think the ads are coming in on the back of emails and therefore being posted out by our emails. hve you noticed how they come in delayed intervals. some politician sd the opther day: internet deviance (Virus, i.d. nicking) is now a white collar industry...true!
-
My Hubby reckons that GR would not put them on there so must be picked up somewhere else. I got shot of mine as soon as they appeared but it appears Gazza is having probs removing his which leads me to believe it has embedded itself in his registry somehow. I HATE ADWARE!!!
;)
-
thanks for the advice. i wil try a few more things.
Spybot has an option within it to Permanently block bad download. When I enable this option & click to go on GR ,instead of the usual page it paints the usual ad at he top of the page but says in a box below ;-
"spybot S&D has blocked the download of "Avenue A, Inc" "
I then click ok or X but the screen does not continue on normally. Even refresh, just cycles round to same as above.
If i disable , GR Screen paints up normally.
Dont think this is same as Avenue.exe ?
Doesnt using Gr require macromedia flash player or something to work? It may be an update for it gone wrong??
Avenue a is a tracker according to some sites. Tracks web sites you visit etc. This is something that I can see GR installing & then selling the info on to 3rd parties. It may be in the T&C's somewhere of using the site that this is forced upon the user. If it is disabled then you cannot use site as is happening to me.
-
Its rather strange how since i scanned and deleted everything i have not seen the ads. My hubby reckons that it has to be a program installed in able to do this and any program installed by a 3rd party is classed as malware. A tracking cookie is easily deleted and just collects information about the websites you are using which almost every website has but this is something different as you cant get onto the site without it enabled. Its possible that your Avenue A is different but they change names so often that you can never be sure. Either way my Hubby reckons you should get rid of it and contact GR directly if you still have probs but the chances are its nothing to do with them.
Karren
;)
I have contacted GR to find out if it is from them. ;)
-
Funnily enough Karen ,I have just this second posted them a querie. I'll see what they say.
Also, weirdly, Spybot is blocking this Avenue A download today, but I'm now able to continue on,whereas yesterday ,no matter what, I couldnt. :o
It works but is just a bit slower to load the screens now.
Will let you know what happens.
Cheers
Gazza

I have no problem either, well not with the pop up ads anyway, I do have a problem getting my profile right on here though, it won't let me keep my name interests or my date of birth etc., I am tearing my hair out >:(
-
It appears that there is a problem with editing profiles lately as i have read a few posts about the problems uploading photos so it may stem from the same cause. Best bet is to try when the site is quiet and see if that works.
???
-
When the site is quiet you say I wonder when that would be ??? Thanks for the reply though. I love your family shield badgirl, I wll have to try and find one for my family now ::)
Just checked and tried again and IT WORKS now ;D ;D
-
Well GR sent me a useless e mail telling me to read their privacy policy. I read it, but it does not explain why you are having probs. The only thing i can think of is to keep it on there but keep checking regularly to make sure its only that. A site that charges for use is not meant to have ads that close connection when disabled so i feel a few complaints coming on as its interrupting a service paid for. There are probably plenty more out there having the same problems but not thinking much of it. As long as your computer is clean of adware and spyware then then thats the main thing!!!

Hey Bad Girl... like your image but not your comments ...
this is not the fault of your host site ... these digital wreckers are happy to cause contention and inconvenience ... they commercially thrive on the back of the inter-complaining that ensues. stay loyal. stay cool. and work out the ante-dote ... no alternative.
who gains: the commercial "intruder;" the anti-"intruder" software people and anyone who may hve an interest in affecting the host site organisation. (politely) get real ... it's the product of the digital age ... and it aint going to go away. best wishes: john
-
Hello,
Well you may be right in some cases but on this occasion GR admit(via e mail) that the adware is down to them so the host site IS to blame this time. They obviously know that being unable to view pages due to large ads that wont close(unless the whole site has closed) interrupts a paid service and they are the only ones who can rectify this. In Gazza's case he is unable to log onto the site unles the ads are enabled. GR are the only ones able to rectify this as they are the ones being paid by the adware company. It may not be going away but in this case it needs to be resolved one way or the other. Have you seen the ads?

Hi again Bad Karen.
I sus an inter rival site nasty going on here.
it's happenning throughout the global business world.
if you were/are in business on the web it cld happen to you... (hey there is a song there somewhere!)
digital attacks ARE a white collar business.
sure if your site throws up an "intruder" you have first to acknowledge and take responsibility for it before you can deal with it.
one thing is certain the brilliance of the designer mind behind your moving image (hey, they will arrest you in Wales!) is equal to the brilliance of the mind who designed the moving red blob.
such minds are ruling the new world we are in. like it or not.
"...who let the Gene out...?" No pun intended.
see you babe. p.s. put some clothes on ... bad girl!
best wishes: john
-
Thats what i thought too(an inter rival nasty!!(Lol)) but it seems that GR admittingly are using these ads. I got rid of the ads myself and now every time i log onto the site the ads are blocked and removed but the question is...... How does Gazza get the same result?
In the e mail i sent to GR i explained the problem in full and lengthy detail, their reply was that they have pre warned us of this type of advertising in the privacy statement. So no "inter rival nasty" !!
Anyway, my point earler was that as long as Gazza can get onto the site(albeit slow) as long as his computer is not affected then for the time being its a waiting game until GR remove the ads. In other cases of course you are right when you say its not the hosts fault, which is why i previously posted an adware removal link for those who did not have it.

k: welsh morgans of herefordshire were on marriage certificates as witnesses to my lot in eardisland c1800. argumentative, too!
back briefly to the burst red blood vessel: if that's not subliminal advertising.... there we are, all antecedent searching quietly among ourselves (!) then the bursting red blob and we are all at it...! nuf sed! nice one: john. p.s. don't like the black heraldry: too morbid: bring back the gyrating geneologist ....
-
Well .Gr replied with "read our privacy Ts&C's.
I did,but still do not have an answer to my precise problem. I have tried Adaware also. No joy.
It seems whenever I 1st boot my pc the GR homepage loads even though spybot throws up the usual warning about blocking Avenue A download, but after ,if I'm lucky, a couple of page refreshes or different page, same prob...page wont load apart from the big banner ad up top with blue background on rest of page+ usual block download warning.
I have tried contacting Neilson/Ratings ,for which a link appears in GR T&C's (they seem to provide a stats service for GR.) to try to find out if they are responsible or aware of Avenue A Inc. Frustratringly their contact us page does not work properly & refuses to submit the query. I have Asked GR to send my Query on my behalf.
-
Well i have got somewhere with GR and they claim if i can identify the adware then they will remove it as they were unaware that the ones they were using caused connection problems. If any one has anything to add other then Avenue A then let me know and i will report it the same time.
Gazza, is the Avenue A, exe or dll???
;)
-
Avenue A adds a tracking cookie to your system ... it claims that it des not collect personal inforamtion but simply records the number of viewings by a computer of specific advertisements.
Ave A can be blocked via your cookie settings.
It's used by a number of agencies and is likely being installed via the ads without GR's knowledge
-
The following is from Avenue A's web site
Privacy Policy
Privacy Policies: www.avenuea.com/info/privacy.asp and www.iballs.com/privacy.html
Both Avenue A and iballs.com use tracking cookies and collect clickstream data. Besides the usual clickstream data, the following is stated on the Avenue A web site:
"Sometimes clients will send us anonymous information they collected online during transactions so that we can provide targeted advertisements and analyze if our advertising has resulted in sales. In this process, the information that we receive is completely anonymous to Avenue A. This information relates to online transactions, such as the website user's anonymous ID, ZIP code, transaction sales total, and product ID. Avenue A will also collect data on events that occur on a client's website, such as the user has applied for a loan."
Opt-Out Option: On iballs.com, the opt-out cookie link redirects to Avenue A. An opt-out cookie that covers both Avenue A and iballs.com cookies is available at www.avenuea.com/info/optout.asp.
Privacy Contact: privacyinfo@avenuea.com
personally i would get rid of it asap and if Gr are responsible complain loudly.
-
posting for Falkyrn:
Are you into history of the ox and bucks either side and including WW1? john
-
Just to confirm badgirl, it is as Falkyrn says. No exe or dll's
Falkyrn ,I have hit the link you kindly found hoping to opt out but the web addy redirects automatically to Avenuea-razorfish.com.
I cannot see an info page or link or any link to opt out ???
-
I also followed their links "round in a circle" ........ its probably on there but well concealed in order to protect them legally (who says I'm a cynic) .
Personally, with these so called opt out options I would never use them and if I ever find any of these trackers I remove them and using the tools in Firefox they never come back.

Goose: hi: back to geneology!
if it is of any interest to you I knew the Fair family of Birmingham who i belikeve were interconmnected to the London Fair family. in the early 1800s i am aware the Fair family were connected to horse dealing and the associated fairs. part of the the Birmingham family connection settled to the Birmingham Horse Fair district which is now Bristol Street.
Also in surname interests you may have a connection to W105UK on this ad forum discussion in the Boreham family. worth a check. john
-
you may like to check Goose on this ad forum. See you both may have a surname connection with Boreham family ... of same general area? john
-
Back to the original topic...ahem!!
After many circles Falkyrn I found the op out here

i relayed all info that we knew to them and they have got back to me again saying thanks for the info and they will get onto rectifying the problem straight away. I told them what the ads look like like and they think that its a branch of one of the advertising companies that they use that has installed them but they said they are sorry for any problems and they were unaware that service was being interrupted.
lets hope its sorted soon.
;)
