Title: Flintshire. Fullbrook, Bagilt: Joseph spencer
Post by: tiktok on Tuesday 12 October 04 20:36 BST (UK)
Hi,

has anyome evr heard of a place in flintshire called fullbrook near Bagilt? I have a scan of the 1851 census for Oldbury west midlands showing my 4 x great grandfather joseph spencer and his family. It gives his place of birth as Flintshire, fullbrook in about 1819. He is 32 years old on the 1851 census.  Has anyone heard of fullbrook? I can see Bagilt on the map but not fullbrook?

Although I have to apologise for not being able to answer your specific query, the reason for my replying to your message, is that of my interest in the Spencer surname.I have in my tree a Cyril Spencer, who was born in the Bagillt area, between 1910 and 1920.Cyril Spencer married my Mothers sister Violet Durber, who was born in Bagillt 1914.If there is any chance that Cyril could be belonging to your spencer family, please get back in touch.

Hi russel,

no problem not answering my question, but I'm afrraid I can't answer your question either  :-\
I have only recently discovered that Joseph spencer was born in fullbrook flintshire. I've had him in my tree for four years and thanks to someone on rootsweb last week found him on the 1851 census for Oldbury. Until then I thought he was born there!

Reading between the lines it seems that Josephs father (haven't got a name for him yet) or maybe his Grandfather came from the black country to work on Halkyn mountain in the lead mines. Joseph was born in 1819 and by 1851 was in Oldbury west mids with wife and one child. I also think there maybe a possiblity that he already had a wife back home in fullbrook!!

I'm sure he would have had brothers and sisters so there is a strong possiblility that your spencers and mine are related. Have you seen this page ]                                                                                                                                                        http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northeast/sites/flintshire/pages/halkyn.shtm  l (http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northeast/sites/flintshire/pages/halkyn.shtm  l[/color)[/url]will keep your email as its too early to rules out your spencers, keep in touch and I'll let you know about any other spencers that cross my path,

Hi Tiktok

Apparently there was a Fulbrook near Holywell, which is not that far from Bagillt, but I believe that the name may have changed or it dosen't exist anymore??? Found a reference to one in the domesday book  http://www.domesdaybook.co.uk/cheshire3.html saying underneath lost so?? Can't seem to find any referrence on old maps either from 1878.

Hope this helps

Hi Paul,

yes, I too found this Joseph. Problem is my joseph was born in 1819 and turns up on the 1851 census in Oldbury west midlands with wife Maria and their 2 week old daughter. Having come across  many Spencers who lied about their age I was inclined to think this must be him until I saw he had a wife called Sarah and not Maria. I wonder if he could have been a bit of a fiber as well as a biganist?

I desperateley need to find a record of my Josephs birth so that I can put a name to his parents, I'm begining to suspect this could be him. Thanks everyobe,

tiktok

Thanks evryone for your help but still can't find him. There is a Joseph spencer born in Flintshire in 1816 and I'm thinking  maybe my Joseph lied about his age and the fact that he also had a wife in Oldbury!
There seems to be only one Joseph spencer born around this time in flintshire  (1816) but it doesn't tie in with my Joseph.

Still searching if anyone can shed any light or make any suggestions I'm still trying to track him down or connect the Joseph Spencer born 1816. I feel sure this 'is' him but can't prove it.

Michelle

Hi everybody,
I am probably about to make the story more complicated but you never know perhaps it will bring some of the threads together. First of all Fullbrook. The following extract from the Flintshire Records Office (a fantastic resource with extremely helpful & dedicated staff) clarifies the connection:

Administrative and biographical history: The Grosvenor family of Eaton Hall, Cheshire, owned estates in Denbighshire and Flintshire from the early 17th century, which included considerable mineral properties. Richard Grosvenor, 1st Baronet, acquired the lead mining, coal mining and stone quarrying interests of the lordships of Bromfield and Yale, Denbighshire, and Coleshill and Rhuddlan, Flintshire, in 1601. After 1750, the easily-accessible veins on Halkyn Mountain had been worked out, and activity moved to the Maeshafn-Llanarmon area, Denbighshire. The Grosvenors' estates in Halkyn, Northop. and adjoining parishes were purchased from Thomas Jones in 1704, and added to by later purchases, until it was sold in 1913. The Halkyn estate was centred on Halkyn Hall until the first Marquess of Westminster built Halkyn Castle in 1825-1826. The Grosvenor family acquired the manor of Holywell, Fulbrook and Greenfield in 1809. St Winefride's Well, a centre of Catholic pilgrimage that was part of the manor, was leased from 1817. From at least the end of the 18th century the Halkyn estate and mineral properties were administered by an agent at Halkyn, while the Denbighshire estates continued to be run from Eaton.

Now the complications! My interest is in the Bloor family who farmed mainly in and around Whitford Flintshire in the late 1700s. Thomas Bloor (b. 1753) married Mary Edwards in Llanasa in 1780. She was born in Flintshire but it is pretty certain he was not. They had many children one of whom one was Joseph (b. 1787 Whitford). He married Ann Phillips in 1815 and they had 4 children. It is here that there is an intriguing connection with this exchange of information. Their daughter Mary (b. 1817 Cwm) married William Brooks (b. 1816 Cwm). They had many children but a son John (b. 1841 Cwm) married and moved to Victoria Australia and it is from there that I have retrieved the information from Mary (Bloor) Brooks down as it appears in the Spenceley & SPENCER in the World Tree Project on Ancestry! I am trying to get in touch with the owner of the tree because it is not clear where the Spencers come into it but perhaps the correspondents to this post may know already. I hope so and if someone does, is there a Bloor connection?
Regards
Alan

You need to make a minimum of 3 board postings before using the Private Message system, Vincent.

Hope this helps
