Post by: denysenz on Tuesday 11 April 06 00:41 BST (UK)
I'm looking for any info. on my GGGrandmother,Catherine Prendergast. All I know is she was from Clonmel co.Tipperary, born abt. 1840.She emigrated to Nelson NZ in 1859 , arriving 1st in Melbourne Australia about 1857/8.Once in NZ she married William Arnold and had about 5 children and died in 1903 in Nelson.

Hello
I've just read your post about your Prendergast ancestor .
Through GenesReunited I have been in touch with a man in Australia .
He has a Prendergast family from Tipperary , who look as though they arrived in Australia during the famine . The only reference to Prendergasts in Tipperary in familysearch does mention Clonmel .
Do the New Zealand records list the parents in the death details ?

Regards,
Linden

PS

Have you asked anyone on Australian Rootschat to do a look up on Catherine and her family's arrival in Melbourne ?

Thanks for your interest.I have been in touch with a man in Aust. with Prendergast connections .If it is the same one , he, unfortunately doesn't have any Catherines in his tree.I have discovered when she arrived in Aust.and the ship but she seems to have travelled by herself. There is no mention of parents names on the death cert.either so I am a bit stuck

 That's a shame !
I received another message from Australia just after I wrote to you and you are right , his family arrived a lot earlier , before the Famine .

However , I can't imagine that Prendergast is a very common name anywhere in Ireland , so there might be some sort of family connection . If the family was RC most of those parish records should have survived . And some of the Church of Ireland records still exist .

Catherine must have had quite a story - she obviously survived all the Famine years .

I recently visited the National Archives in Dublin and their resident genealogists were really helpful . I don't know whether they could help .

After  contacting the man in Australia I shall now be on the lookout for Tipperary Prendergasts , so if I discover anything I'll let you know .

Good Luck

Hi Caty, long time to wait for some feedback but better late than never!Ihope you have had some success in your hunt?Mine has taken about 10 years and is only now starting to bear fruit.Mlot started in Tipp;but moved down to Waterford later,to find this out it took a letter to the heritage people in that County.providing details from 1901 census, they did give me a lot of what I asked for, which was good, but didn't match census info;so now my hunt continues, still enjoying it and Ihope you haven't given up?
Good Luck+happy hunting,
glucose.
