Hi, could anyone please find Joshua and Mary Wink on the 1841 census. I do not know their ages, but they married in 1835 at St Anne's Soho. I think that they died in 1848 Islington and 1846 Holborn respectively and they (I hope) were the parents of Joshua Wink, born 1841 (registered june qrt. Holborn, so maybe too late for census ) who was in the Hackney Orphanage in 1851. Many thanks for any info' regards Celia

Hello, Celia,
1841 census
HO107/671 book 2 folio 54
7, Bedford Court, New North St, St. George the Martyr, Finsbury
Joshua Wink age 25 Couch M.Lab born in county N
Mary Wink age 30 b in c N
Mary Wink age 2 b in c Y
NK boy age 2 weeks b in c Y
It looks a tho' baby Joshua just made it for the census, probably not yet registered.
Hope this helps,
Meliora

Hi Meliora, thanks for yor help, just what I hoped for. I can't think what a Couch M.lab does , I take it that it does all refer to his occupation? once again thanks a lot. regards Celia

I had a look at the image and think it might be Coach M. Lab, this enumerator's 'a's do look at lot like 'u's. In which case it's probably Coach Maker's Labourer.

Helllo, Celia & Jorose,
I felt that it could be either Couch or Coach & as New North Street lies right in the middle of the Furniture , Chair & Couch making district I opted for Couch. My own paternal family had one brother a Master Cabinet Maker & another brother a Master Chair & Couch Maker in the same Shoreditch area, employing several men so I felt that Joshua Wink could have been a Couch Maker's Labourer. In all census refs, for the Chair & Couch maker the occupation was always Couch, the name at the time for what we usually call Sofa or Settee.
This area is still a district full of these occupations.
But then again if it turns out to be Coach, I will have opted for the wrong one. Hope I haven't confused you too much.
If you obtain the birth cert for Joshua, June ¼ 1841, this should clear up this point, the same for the death cert for Joshua snr.

Hi Meliora & Jerose, I sat pondering the occupation and had thoughts that it could have meant couch maker's labourer, which would conveniently fit with the history of the area and also that it could be misread and is in fact coach. I have just started this particular family for my best friend and it may be a while until we get round to getting the certificates for these two individuals , but I'm looking forward to seeing the outcome. Once again thankyou very much. Regards Celia.
