Hi
I'm researching my Burgess ancestors and have traced them back to Blithfield in Staffordshire in the early 1800s. What I can't be sure of is where Blithfield is, the only reference I can see is to the reservoir. Was there a village there before the reservoir was constructed (in the 1950s I believe), and if so where would any parish records have gone?
Any advice or local insight would be very useful!
Thanks,
Mel

Thanks for the info. How frustrating that the gaps in the records coincide with the years I'm particularly interested in!! Nevermind, might try the Bishops records as they seem more complete.
Thanks

Hi

Hi - just joined this board - I AM one of those Burgesses from Blithfield. I've got information going back to about 1534. Send me a PM if you would like more info!

Hi Gordon
Not sure whether you got my reply (via PM) so just in case here is the list of my direct ancestors. We seem to descend from John and Elizabeth Burgess (John died 1743 in Blithfield), although there are a few other Burgesses on the tree who are not linked in so I'm not sure how they fit.
John Burgess (d. 1743) & Elizabeth
Edward Burgess (c. 1730) & Ann Ball
Lewis Burgess (c. 1769) & Ann / Mary or Mary-Ann?
James Burgess (c. 1805) & Sarah Elizabeth Foster
Edwin Henry Burgess (b. 1841 in Lambeth) & Eliza Osborn
Charles Walter Burgess (b. 1874 in Leyton, Essex) & Ellen Radford
Norman Burgess (b. 1909 in Romford, Essex) & Charlotte Kearn
The tree seems to be very large in the early 1800s with many siblings, some of whom I have traced through to the late 1800s but no further as yet. There seem to be a lot of farmers in the family, with up to 320 acres of land in some census records.
I hope our information correlates - it would be interesting to know who the earliest Burgesses were in Blithfield.
Regards,
Melanie

Hi
Do any of you know Talbot or Bagot family in or near by Blithfield?
Thanks

Hello,
Only two buildings were affected when the reservoir was constucted along the river valley. There is information about it at www.blithfield.com/. The website www-old-maps.com gives you the layout of the land prior to and after the reservoir's constuction (put Admaston into the Gazetteer).
Hope this is helpful to you.

Hi TalbotMartin,
The Bagot family owned Blithfield Hall. I believe that Lady Bagot still lives there although some of the buildings have now been turned into private apartments.
This link gives some of the history and photos.

Hi
Thank you for your replies.
Some of the acres in Blithfield is owned by The Bagot family who live in Blithfield House/Hall.
Do you have any records regarding the Blithfield House/Hall Servants/Maids?
If you would like anymore information regarding your question please ask as my GGG Grandad used to live there.
Thanks again
TalbotMartin
