Title: Johnstown Rhos
Post by: franpow on Friday 07 April 06 22:36 BST (UK)
I have the marriage cert for my William Hollis & Catherine Magee. It was 6th Oct 1913 Wrexham Register office.Hooray!!!

William's father, deceased at the time of the event, was Frederick Hollis. His wife was Sarah Hollis, maiden name unknown.
The only other remark made was, Frederick was of "independant means."
I wondered if anyone would be able to discover the date of death of Frederick Hollis.

While Catherine's father was Adair Magee, also deceased.A farmer.
Thank you in adance.

It would help greatly in finding this Frederick Hollis if you would give the age of William when he married.

Is this your William's parents marriage....
In 1875 a Frederick William Hollis married Sarah Shirley...
Ref: (registered 3rd quarter of 1875) Stoke Upon Trent, Staffordshire. 6b 267

In order to confirm the birth of Sarah Shirley how old was she and in what year did she die?

Where was your William Hollis born?
William Hollis.. Birth Ref: (registered 1st quart of 1876) Derby 7b 533
William Hollis.. Birth Ref: (registered 3rd quart of 1875) Derby 7b 441

This is highly speculative perhaps,but I found the following Family in the 1881 Census in Derby;
Hannah Hollis,Widow Head born Nottinghamshire c 1845.
Fredk Hollis,Son born Derbyshire c1873,
William Hollis,Son born Derbyshire c 1876,
Fanny Hollis, Daughter born Derbyshire c 1878,
I also found the marriage of a Fredrick Hollis and a Hannah Bowler,in Derby in 1866.There is also a Hannah Bowler in Derby in the 1861 Census born in Nottinghamshire in c 1846.I was unable to find a death for a Fredrick Hollis  though.

Thank you for all your help. Sadly when I replied excitedly  to your question of what age William was at his marriage too Catherine, I replied "38yrs." this was incorrect. My eyes are not what they used to be, William Hollis was 36yrs.

William died in Wrexham about 1934/1935. In the March. I can recall he died in the same year as the Geresford disaster.

Albeit, my father always said that his father, William came from Derby. But, everything up to now suggests he may have been born and bred in Wrexham.
This is very speculative, but all I have to go on.

To JSL,
Catherine Magee was born in Down Ireland.
I have no idea if Frederick was born in Derby.
Thank you anyway for your trouble.

WRJ,
My Paternal G.Grandmother's, name was Sarah. I have no information regarding this lady whatsoever.Other than at some stage after the death of Frederick she married again, the suggested name of this man was William Stark.Which in return it was widely known that Sarah divorced him.

My Maternal G.Grandmothers name was Mary Hannah Magee of Down Ireland married to a Farmer.

Is this your William's parents marriage....
In 1875 a Frederick William Hollis married Sarah Shirley...
Where was your William Hollis born?

On the Free BMD site this is the only Frederick Hollis who married a Sarah.
Where was your William born?
Where has he been found on the 1901, 1891, 1881 census years? Have you looked for him?

From what I can gather no Hollis are to be found in this area in the 19th century ???which contradicts that Frederick Hollis was a native of the Wrexham area.
The Hollis name was most popular in the Potteries & Derbyshire.

This is a very confusing matter... You have the wedding certificate... Locate the chap in 1901, 1891, 1881 & info may jump out now that several possible leads have been put forward.
