Are there any other researchers out there researching the Bayley family of Willaston Hall, near Nantwich in Cheshire? The family were originally from the county of Staffordshire.

Hi Kali,
Thank you so very much for responding to my messuage.
I was just wondering if there is anybody else out there researching this family. At the moment, I'm trying to locate the marriage of James Bayley (who had been a captain in the Royal Cheshire Militia) and Elizabeth Franklin in about 1812/1813. I was hoping somebody might know.
Cheers - Jayson.

Hi Kali,
Many thanks for this, I really appreciate it.
I've seen these entries from the IGI before. There are a number of SCARY errors in it too. For instance, Elizabeth was the daughter of James Franklin NOT John. They have Willistone which should be Willaston, and some of the dates are incorrect too! Never mind!
Cheers - Jayson :)

Hello Jayson:
I did a lot of research on this family in 2003 and have a large, hard copy family tree, the latest entry on which was born in 1890 (my grandfather, Henry Bayley). Here's what it says about them:
James Bayley of Willaston Hall, Co. Chester, of Stapeley, Co. Chester and of Rumleigh (may not have that right - it's on a fold), Co. Devon, Born 22, May, 1782.
Elizabeth Bayley - only daughter and heir of John Franklin of Rumleigh Co Devon, and Bere Ferrers, Co. Devon. Marr. August 1812.
It does not give the place, but they would have lived in Willaston Hall at that time. There is a nearby church with a collapsed nave with many family tombstones. The records are kept in a nearby church and I would have to sift through boxes to find its name. There is also the larger church in Nantwich where they might have been married. There are plaques with Bayleys on the wall there.
I can tell you about their offspring too, if you like.
I wonder if this James is the one who, in family lore, is immortalized in a print, jumping his horse over a mess table.

Hi, Jayson, Westcoast girl et al, speaking to you two years down the line, I'd just like to say that my grandmother, Dorothy, was a Bayley and I'd be most interested to see the family tree or hear from anyone related to, or with information on, the family.
The picture of James Bayley jumping the mess table was copied and given to my grandmother. Have a copy somewhere and a water colour painting of part of the the back of the house. My grandmother told me that as a girl she would climb up a tree in the grounds and watch foxcubs playing.

Not sure about all of this, but Willaston Hall was sold circa 1966 - 1967 not sure by whom, but there is every likelihood it went to auction!
Certainly the family that purchased it have until recently had an interest in it and developed part of the land
I have mailed those who have a Bayley interest.

The Willaston Hall estate was sold by auction on 2 November 1964. I have the actual sales brochure in front of me right now.
The estate was split up and sold in 10 lots. Willaston Hall itself was sold with 40 acres of land and only a few years later a sizeable part was sold and the Murrayfield Drive housing estate built on the land. Some time much later a smaller more exclusive estate was built nearer the hall close to where the farm buildings were.

Thank you all so much for the extra information. I have a very old picture of Willaston Hall as it used to be, surrounded by land and huge trees.

The Willaston Hall estate was sold by auction on 2 November 1964
That's a better date all I can remeber is when I had driving lessons in 1967, we used to end up at Willaston Hall and it was undergoing 'renovation'.
Most probaby bought by a local estate agent.

Here is the Hall in 1964 at the time of the sale. Not really changed much.

I have a lot of contracts , Abstracts of Title etc in relation to lands bought by my great grandfather.
One lot was bought off Maria Bayley in 1863 , other lots from Ralph Sneyd esq who is described as being the Lord of the Manor of Willaston. There’s some link between the Bayleys and the Sneyds

Hi Roger
Thank you for your reply.
How interesting! I wasn't aware that Maria Bayley had sold off land to the Birchall family. I'm guessing this was the same family of Birchall that lived on a farm on Colley's Lane, Willaston? A Sarah Birchall lived at Brassey Hall I seem to remember in the mid 19th century. The title deeds to this last property I found on ebay. These deeds I deposited at the county archive in Chester. I made a copy of the 1863 auction catalogue and I have the map too. Maria Bayley acquired about 100 acres from Ralph Sneyd. I don't know of any link between the Bayleys and Sneyds other than business.
I am making a detailed search of the Crewe Chronicle and have found many references re the Birchall family especially in relation to land owned by Birchall which the council wanted to acquire so they could put down sewers.
King regards

Sarah was my GG grandmother , wife of Charles Birchall farming as tenants of Ralph Sneyd at Brassey Hall. My great grandfather Edward had this tenancy passed to him on Charles’ death, he then saw his chance to purchase Dairy House Farm , Colley’s Lane from Ralph Sneyd in 1861, also some other small parcels of land. The indentures are beautiful hand written documents, the abstracts being very detailed going back to the 18th century. I would be interested in seeing any documents you have discovered. You’re correct in saying the link between Sneyds & Bayleys was of a business nature
Kind regards
Roger

Hello Roger
I think the Brassey Hall documents would be of interest to you. I gave these to the RO in Chester several years as I had no need of them. The said deeds are really rather interesting as at least several have maps annexed showing the extent of the Brassey Hall estate. This farm was sold in 1863 by Sneyd. I have the auction catalogue and would be more than happy to send you images if you are interested. Do please feel free to contact me for any more help I can give.
Kind regards
Jay

Would anyone have a picture of the serving staff at Willaston Hall? My grandmother was in service there circa 1880-90.
Thank you.
-
Hello!
Unfortunately, there are known photographs of staff members. What was your grandmother’s name?
Jay

Thanks for the reply. My Great Grandmother was Rose Hilditch and she was in service, probably at Willaston Hall, but could have been at Brassey's Farm or Dairy House Fram on Colleys Lane. Really I am grateful for anything that maa lead to aditional information.
All the brest,
James

Whoops, : I must apologise for the spelling! It was late and Wolves had lost but that should not excuse my lack of attention to detail.https://www.rootschat.com/forum/Smileys/christmas/tongue.gif

My Great Grandmother was Rose Hilditch and she was in service at Willaston Hall (possibly Brassey Hall or Dairy House Farm also) about 1890. Thank you for the reply and I am grateful for any help no matter how small.
