Hello once again Denyse

From what you tell me John would most probably be Benjamin's brother. Benjamin and two of his sons were brewers in Rowley Regis and I know Alice who was the youngest daughter of Jeremiah BILLINGHAM and Isabella TROMANS went and lived in Netherton after she was married. Her husband James LOCKWOOD was the son of Sarah Ann BILLINGHAM and Edward LOCKWOOD. Their common ancestor being John BILLINGHAM and Phebe TIBBETS. Have you seen the sight for BILLINGHAN'S of Cradley Heath?

Hi Denyse

I'm trying to find the roots of a Matthew Hancox - I have his birth certificate and he was born 17 June 1887 at 9 Dunn Street, Dudley registered in Dudley the son of Matthew Hancox, plate layer and his wife Elizabeth formerly Moore.

We know that they had an elder son James bc 1885 Hednesford and a daughter called Selina who was born 13 Jan 1891 in Dudley Union Workhouse - her father Matthew is entered as deceased occ plate layer and her mother was again given as Elizabeth formerly Moore (of Dudley) on her birth certificate.  The father Matthew must have died in 1890 although I have been unable to find a death for him anywhere.  Nor can I find a marriage for him and Elizabeth Moore which would give me his father's name and I cannot find a Matthew Hancox on the 1881 census.

James was living with his mother in 1901 at 3 Court House, Tower Street, Dudley - she had remarried to an Edward Green on 25 Dec 1898 in the parish church of Netherton, Dudley and her father's name was given as Stephen Moore.  Matthew junior was living in an Industrial school in Dudley but there is no sign of Selina on the 1901 census.

Matthew and his older brother James had a fight one day which involved a knife and Matthew lost an eye as a result.  This was probably why he ended up in an Industrial school because his widowed mother and/or new step father couldn't cope with him fighting with James.  Matthew ran away from his school and walked along the railway lines to Wales.  He was a carter and worked at Llandovery College for some years and then became the groundsman at Glanbrydan House - working for the Richardson family and later Canon Walker-Thomas.  He married Elinor Bryant who was born in Fulham.  My husband is Elinor and Matthew's grandson.

Look as I might, I cannot find any of either Matthew seniors family nor his wife Elizabeth Moore - the 1901 census gives her place of birth as Ashby-de-la-Zouch but I can find no evidence of her or her father Stephen Moore on the relevant censuses.  Do you, by any chance, have this Matthew Hancox in your tree?

Any Attwoods anyone?

Trying to prove a link to the Dudley Suttons (yes, them at the castle) and my Richard Attwood married Eleanor 'Sutton or Dudley' in 1647 according the IGI PRs.

Title: Re: Surname interests around Dudley

Try looking at

http://www.stephrobinson.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/

There's more than a few Attwoods there!! And Hamptons, too.

I would be extremely cautious of the IGI tree for Richard Attwood unless you can independently verify its authenticity.

There was a report in the Black Country Bugle a few weeks ago claiming that all Black County Attwoods are related. However, proving it is another matter entirely. I've been trying to track down my wife's Attwood ancestors, but trying to sort out them all out when family sizes were typically 11 or 12 children with no census data to go on, and parent's names not recorded on marriage register entries is a real nightmare. That's assuming they got married. If they were chainmakers in Cradley, they're just a likely to have "jumped over the broom" :o

My Attwoods moved out of Dudley in 1730's and brought up their children in the Wellington area of Shropshire. Luckily there weren't too many Attwood's around in Dudley at that time so it has been fairly easy to trace them back using PRs.

I'm interested in Steventons around the Dudley area (and Smiths - sigh - in the same area)

I have George STEVENTON (c. 1795/6 - 24/4/1869) m Ann SHAW (c. 1795/6-13/4/1868) on 24/5/1818 in Old Swinford.  According to the 1841, 51 and 61 censuses, both were born in Dudley.

There was a family tradition down the Steventon-Smith line, still strongly asserted in the 1940s, that an ancestor was Lifesguardsman Shaw who fought at the Battle of Waterloo.  Clearly the connection would be Ann Shaw, but what the connection is (if there is one) is unknown.

In the 1841 census (HO107; Dudley;Worcestershire; ED 34; Page: 10; ) George and Ann Steventon are living next door to a Joel Steventon and his family.  Looking at the ages of George and Joel, I would guess they're brothers.  Both called some of their children biblical (?) names (Noah, Gideon, Nimrod, Dorcas, Zillah) and others more "normal" names.

From the census returns I know that George and Ann Steventon had the following children:

Priscilla/Zillah (both her first name and her family name are slightly different every time it appears, until she marries Henry Smith - clearly clerks knew how to spell Smith) is my ancestor and link to George and Ann.

Priscilla's husband, Henry SMITH, was born in Derby End/Derby Hand, Netherton, Dudley c. 1837.  He died in Blackpool, Lancs on 5th Jan 1903.  At his marriage to Priscilla in 1856 and still at the time of the 1861 census he was a miner.  After a period as a labourer, he became a fish and oyster dealer in Blackpool, a trade at least one of his descendants, Charlie SMITH, was still carrying out in RHO Hills department store in Blackpool in the 1950s.

On the 1841 and 1851 censuses Henry SMITH (1837-1903) is in Dudley.  On the 1861 census he and his family are living in Bourn Brook, Rowley Regis.  Between the birth of Emily in 1867 and the the birth of JJoseph in 1869, the family had moved up to Barrow-in-Furness.  And then between the 1875 and 1876 the family moved to Blackpool, where a number of descendants still live.

Henry & Priscilla had 14 children:
+ Ann Maria (b. 20/4/1857 Rowley Regis, m. Joseph SMITH 12/7/1875 in Barrow)
+ Elizabeth  (b. 12/10/1859, Old Hill, Staffs; d. unmarried 29/5/1874, Barrow)
+ Henry (b. 2/7/1862, Old Hill, Staffs; married Annie GALL, 12/3/1888 in Blackpool, 10 weeks before their 1st child was born! He died 14/12/1920 in Blackpool)
+ Jemima (b. 29/11/1864, Barrow in Furness, m. Thomas BILSBORROW or BILSBOROUGH from Preston 20/1/1885 in Blackpool, d. 23/2/1907)
+ Emily or Emmeline (b. 24/4/1867 in Dudley, m. Henry Thomas STEVENSON from Hulme, Manchester 16/11/1889. She died 27/4/1956 at Wesham hospital)
+ Joseph (b. 9/11/1869, d. 21/12/1870)
+ George Smith (b. 11/11/1871 in Dalton-in-Furness), m. Edith Louise PARK 16/8/1893 in Blackpool)
+ William Smith (b. 27/9/1873 in Barrow-in-Furness), m. Gertrude Mary MARTIN 8/12/1894 in Oldham, Lancs. He died 19/1/1948.)
+ Ephraim (born and died 8/5/1875)
+ Ann (b. 9/4/1876 in Blackpool, m. Mark BLACKBURN 17/9/1902 in Blackpool)
+ John (Jack) (b. 22/5/1878 in Blackpool, m. Florence Campbell 12/9/1898 in Blackpool; dided 27/1/1935)
+ Septimus (b. 14/8/1879 in Blackpool, d. 16/12/1958 in Blackpool, where he was a well known local "character")
+ Isaac (29/5/1881-9/2/1882)
+ Manasseh (11/7/1882-12/7/1882)

Hi - I am looking for information regarding the parents/siblings of James Billingham (also sometimes called Bellingham), born Tipton c1819 and lived there working as a miner (in fact he was a sinker) with his wife Mary Ann nee Law and their children.  These included Betsy, Martha, Timothy, Phillis, Elizabeth, Jane, and twins Maryann and James.  I have found him on the census for 1841/51/61.  This was not the James Billingham working as a chain maker or similar.  I would be very grateful for any information, I seem to be completely stuck!

Thank you,
Judith

Hello Judith
There's this marriage on the IGI index

Timothy Billingham + Martha Sillitoe 9Nov 1801 at St Thomas Dudley

I thought it may be of interest as James had children with those christian names.

Unfortunately, Jackie and Judith, that's a submitted entry.  Entries for that year should now be complete on FREEREG but that one doesn't seem to appear under either name.

Hi Jodie,

Joel Steventon (c. 1801-23/4/1875) is my great x4 uncle.

His parents Joseph Steventon and Zealous Dunn are my great x4 grandparents.

Joseph & Zealous married at Dudley St Thomas on 4th Dec 1794 (it's on the IGI and the Worcestershire marriages database that was on the former familyhistoryonline website, and is now on findmypast).

Joseph & Zealous Steventon had seven children (that I know about - their baptisms are on the IGI):
+ George 1795-24/4/1869 (the censuses put him born 1795 or 1796, but I was really fortunate that after a lot of detective work I tracked down the family bible that he started, where he says he was born in 1795)
+ Obadiah (c. Feb 1799 - 15/6/1868)
+ Joel (c. 1801/2 - 23/4/1875)
+ Nancy (c.1805 - ?)
+ Phoebe (c. 1808-between 1881 & 1891)
+ Kerenhappuch (c. 1812 - ?)
+ Gideon (29/10/1815 - ?)

I've not looked at these Steventons for a couple of years, so it's entirely possible that more records have become available, and it might be possible to track them down further.
Where they've got full death dates above, I've bought those death certificates and could let you have a copy.

George married Mary Ann Shaw (1795-13/4/1868) at Old Swinford, 24/5/1818 (Worc marriages & IGI) as in my post above, which I'll edit, as some of the info there is now superseded.

Obadiah marrid first Judith Darby (c. 1802-9/11/1840) on 23/6/1823 at Dudley and then secondly, Rebecca Mullett (c.1804-12/5/1884) on 31 May 1841 at Dudley. He had two children with Rebecca.

Joel married Sarah Skeldin (c.1802-26/7/1879) on 23/5/1825 at Dudley and they had 8 children.

Nancy I know nothing about other than her baptism

Phoebe married Christopher Plant (c.1807-1895) on 22 Oct 1827 at Tipton, Staffs. (Got her family's details from a family tree on tribalpages.com (http://www1.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=dennis47&view=0&pid=10611&rand=376945993) and they had 9 children

Kerenhappuch married Samuel Bissell 6 feb 1832 at Tipton, Staffs. I've not yet found anything further on this family.

Gideon I know only from his baptism.

I'm happy to share what I've got, and can email you a download from my family tree software, but we need to exchange email addresses via private message, and I think you have to have made 5 (or 10?) posts on rootschat before you're allowed to use the private messaging facility. I'll see if I can send you a PM - maybe you can read them, but not send them till you've met the number of posts.  If that doesn't work, then you'll have to make a few more posts!

Which one of Joel the elder's children do you descend from? He had a son called Joel, b. c. 1833, but as far as I've been able to trace, he didn't have a son called Joel (which is a bit odd, now I think about it)

On scanners and such like, I've given up on them. Far too temperamental beasties.  I always use my trusty old digital camera as a "scanner" now.  Much easier!

Thanks for your email, Jodie - I'll reply shortly.

Hi

Scanners are a pain, so i took your advice and got the camera out, much better.  I also men't to ask how did you manage to track down a steventon family bible,i'm still hunting, or is it a case of being in the right place at the right time so to speak?
kind regards
jodie

Finding the family bible was a bit of luck followed by a few weeks' detective work, followed by a bit more luck.

In 1962 there was an article in the Lancashire Evening Post written by local historian Kathleen Eyre on one Sep Smith, the son of Henry Smith and Zillah Steventon.  That article gave a list of all Sep's siblings drawn from a family bible, and all his mother's siblings too.

We had a cutting of that article in one of my dad's cuttings files but nobody had ever heard of there being a family bible.  There was some memory of Sep having been interviewed by Kathleen Eyre, so we assumed that he must have had the bible and when he died it was chucked away with all his other junk.

Then one day, I was browsing through the catalogues of the Lancashire Records Office, and happened to find a reference to Kathleen Eyre - it turned out that when she died all her papers had been deposited there.  So I thought there might be notes from her meetings with Sep.  I never did find those, and unfortunately the deposit has never been catalogued.  But after weeks and weeks of ploughing through box after box of papers, albums of clippings, albums of postcards and all sorts of stuff she'd collected over the years, I came across a clipping of the article we already had a copy of.  Then on the next page, she'd kept all the correspondence relating to it.  Cutting a long story a bit shorter, it transpired that following a chance meeting she'd borrowed the bible off a Smith cousin.

In separate researches, I knew about this cousin, but had no contact details for her, and anyway she was likely to be dead now.  But I'd made contact with another cousin on the Smith side and had been keeping him informed, and he was in touch with a child of the cousin who'd loaned the bible to Kathleen Eyre.  He got in touch, and was told the bible had been thrown away after it had completely disintegrated ... but the pages relating to family history had been kept.  There are two sets, one from a much older bible, presumably pasted into the newer bible in the later 19th century, or in the 20th century.  This is a very battered page with some barely legible scrawl on both sides listing George & Ann Stevanton (sic) and their children.  The other more recent pages, from a bible with pre-printed pages for a "family register" lists the births, marriages and deaths of Henry & Zillah Smith.  The deaths were maintained up till 1935.

I've not seen the original, only scans, and unfortunately by the time I'd got them, they only really confirmed what I'd already discovered following the leads given in the Lancs Evening Post article.  Also in Kathleen Eyre's papers were a few of Sep's election posters (he kept trying to stand as a councillor in Blackpool) which are hilarious.

Hello,

I am currently researching my ancestors that lived in Dudley in the 1850s and 1860s. They moved to the states in 1867. With the assistance of some very helpful people here, I've tracked them down as living on Wolverhampton Street in 1861. Incidentally, I walked down that very street today, trying to figure out which building they lived in.
There is a mystery name on the census: Elizth Green, daughter, age 5 in 1861. There is no mention of her on the passenger list or in any further census. I assume she died in the 1860sbut am having difficulties finding that information. Any pointers?
Thank you
Cassandra
