Hi there everyone,
My gg-grandfather Soloman Finey was a complete hard case who walked out on his family in Hampshire after an argument and crewed his way to Auckland, NZ on the Hermione in 1882. He never left the Auckland area but did work for a while as a gum digger probably in the Whangarei area.
Soon after he would have married Rose Emily Newton (descended from the Albertlanders) because my g-grandmother Eva Jane Finey was born in 1886 and is to my knowledge the eldest child. Soloman and Rose Emily had the following kids (dates are to the best of my family's knowledge):
Eva Jane - b1886
Ethel - b1887
Rhoda - b1889
Hilda - b1892
John - b1893
George Edmond - b 16 March 1895 (only know this because he's famous in Oz)
Ruth - b1896
Edna - b1898
Lilly - b1900
William Hector - b1902
Rose Emily died in 1917 and Soloman married again to who knows who producing a daughter called Dorothy in 1920.
Can anyone please help me find out anything more about the birthdates for the kids, dates for the marriages and who Soloman married the second time????
From George Finey's autobiography it appears that the second marriage was not approved of and everyone moved out of home as a result. My father, uncle and I are fascinated by everything we can find and would love to know more about them all.
Also any Finey descendents who may read this please let yourselves be known!
Thanks so very much,
Infobunny :)

Hi infobunny
Have looked at Archway and have found the following records Soloman Finey
Auckland probabte- lift Attendant 1955
WW1 records for George Edmond WW1 5/509 Army- Wellington
WW1 records for John Finey WW1 11448 Army- Wellington
Should you want to order these records go to Archway Simple Search and type in the name Finey, there are only 6 Finey's listed so you should have no trouble finding them.
Finey doesn't appear to be a very popular name and I have checked the "Telecom White pages" and there are only two Finey's listed, both in the North of New Zealand one in New Plymouth and another in Auckland. So it may be worth contacting them.
Good Luck

Hi Jericho,
Man, you're quick on the ball!!! Ta heaps for the list (both of them). I have copies of the military records but I'm wary of Auckland Archives as I've heard they would rather you turn up in person to request things (even though I would really really really like the probates).
Why is NZ so hard to get stuff out of???!!! Is it like a state secret or something? :D
I'm also blessed with surnames that tend to be very mobile or die out so that doesn't make it easy to track people. I have found some gravestones on online Auckland cemetery sites but of course am struggling with marriages and births.
Cheers to you

There may be someone living in Auckland on this board that might look at the probate of Soloman Finey for you. I'm sure you will be find someone to help you. Good luck

Hi Infobunny, welcome to the NZ Board.
Archives NZ should be easily accessible even if you're overseas. I suggest you contact their Auckland office and ask for copies of the probate, and the Wellington office to request the Army files. Be aware that you will get one free enquiry per year (excluding photocopy costs, p&P, etc), so it might be an idea to get a relative to send in the second enquiry (think devious ;-)
If you encounter any problems let us know.
It's not that we have state secrets, you just have to know where to look!
Regards, riley

Here are the results of the NZ Telecom White Pages search. These are the only FINEY's in the country, so are very likely to be relations. Kiwi's love meeting people and renewing connections with relatives, so don't hesitate to contact them.

Hi Riley,
Thanks so much for that. Apologies for not replying and thanking you sooner, but everything has been just ridiculously busy! Holiday weekend rush.
Have a choc-filled Easter.

Hi.
I was very excited when I saw your family connection with Solomon Finey. My Grandfather was John Finey, originating from Emsworth who had a brother called Solomon who went to NZ in the 1800's. The Solomon I am looking for was born in 1854 and had a sister called Rhoda. His parents were called Tamar and Solomon. I never actually met my grandfather as he died when my mother was 16. He married my grandmother when she was 18 and he was 63!! The more I hear about him I don't think I would have liked him!!! If you answer this perhaps we can pool resources? I live in Lincolnshire. Hi there everyone!!
ARGHHHHH!!!!!! I never got any notifications that you were all yakking about this!!! And by chance just decided to have a look at the board tonight and saw this!! :o :o
Jaynnis!!! Blimey!! You're my family!!!! You have no idea just how glad I am that there are still Finey descendants left in the UK. I hadn't been able to find any of you (from our family) and had thought we over in NZ/Oz were the last (not that I've managed to find them either yet - as in live people). Please please please come back on or PM me by hitting the little green scroll on the left side of messages under my user name. I SOOOO want to chat with you ;D ;D
Bren - thanks so much for the births. They clear up missing middle names for me and help me to understand why I can't find some cemetery records - they were using their middle names!! >:( And as for that Te Awamutu reg....I'll work on that.
Mk2 - as always you are fantastic! I have not gotten around to getting a copy of the probate as yet (cost is scary) but I must ask my family if they know who Alice Thomas was as that rings no bells with me. Yes John was one of his sons and was actually also a violin maker - something else I have to try and track down info on.
Del - I've always marvelled at how you help people with all of those marriages and I'm honoured to be helped by you this time. All of the first lot and three of the possibles are mine. You are just too good :D
Jaynnis - please come back soon. I have to get your e-addy so I can yak heaps!!! ;D
Love you all so much

Hi
Ive just typed my gg/fathers name into Google and ended up here.
He was Solomon Finey - gf John Finey - mother Reay Edna Finey(she had a sister Joy Hazel Mee).
You havnt posted for a few yrs...still looking?
cheers
Linda
-
Dear, dear Linda,
HI CUZZIE!!!!!!! Of COURSE I still look!! ;D ;D I'm so nosey I'll look for as long as I'm alive! It's so awesome that you've decided to have a look for yourself. I have most of the family but it peters out when you get to people like your mother and auntie. I have Reay and her husband Richard but no kids (so that means no you on my tree...until now ;)), and I have Joy and her husband and her kids but not all the birthdates and certainly nothing further than that for your branch.
If you post one more message then you'll activate a wee green scroll that you will be able to see underneath your user name. Clicking on the green scroll will mean we will be able to send each other messages privately that only you and I will be able to see. It allows you to gossip about the twigs on the tree!
I'm in Wellington!
Cheers

Dear Sharon,
Blimey I've been looking for you too. Where are you? Im in Auckland - email and I will forward my address and ph. but you have make 2 more contacts to me through this site either with just a smiley or hello, then we can talk in the back-room so to speak.
I thought all my family had fallen of the planet then f/b came along and I had brief contact about two years ago with our cousin in Oz., but then he dropped off for some reason. He told me about Aunty Joy...man I was so sad. I have been to visit her grave though and she is just down from her mum and my mum is just across the way from them...so they are all in proximity from each other at Purewa
You must join us on f/b. I have started a page called the Finey Family Tree Hut with family members I recently found who's grandparents are the sisters and brothers to my grandpa (your gr. grandpa), John Finey.
There is a lot to catch up on and I have missed you dearly so contact me as soon as you can. :)
all my love :-*

Hi Linda,
Better remove your email address as RC doesn't allow details of that kind on here, nor the names of living persons.
Sharon needs to make two more posts, just with smileys or a Hello to both, then you can use the PM (Personal Message - the scroll) to exchange your email addys.
No doubt Bunny will be jumping for joy again. ;D
Cheers

Hello
-
Ive altered the message, now how do I re-send to Shazza ???
No need to re-send .... Shazza has seen the altered message, she just needs one more post, when you see that she has 3, you can click on the scroll ..... doesn't matter if it is showing green or grey .... the latter means off-line. You can send messages when a person is off-line, they just get it when they next sign in.
Cheers

HELLO - just stumbled across this as my GG Grandfather is Soloman Finey too! (Though on my notes it's spelt SOLOMON, probably my Nana's mistake?) His daughter LILLIAN (not Lily as noted in the original post) is my Great Grandmother. Lillian married James Marshall in 1922, and their daughter Paula is my grandmother (who I call Nana). Paula was one of five kids.
