Hi,
I'm trying to trace my family history back from my Great, Great, Great Grandparents - George Nelson and Mary Metcalfe, who married in Sheriff Hutton (Yorkshie) parish church in 1827.
George was born in 1806 in Sheriff Hutton. He died in 1866. His parish register burial record shows him as George Nelson of Lilling. His wife, Mary was born in 1809 in Hull (Yorkshire). She died in1862.
I can see from the 1851 census that there was a George Nelson, born 1779 in Sheriff Hutton and it seems likely that he was George's (b1806) father, but I have no firm evidence.
Can you advise, please, on how I could trace George & Mary's ancestors.
I have been in touch with the Borthwick Institute for Archives. Their marriage certificate does not show their parents names and there is no baptism entry for George in Sheriff Hutton for the relevant period.

On the 1851 census the George Nelson born circa 1779 and living in Sheriff Hutton gives his birthplace as the adjacent parish of Terrington not Sheriff Hutton.
HO107 2369 folio 797
Sheriff Hutton Yorkshire
George Nelson 72 Terrington, Yorkshire, Head Married Pauper
There are two other Nelsons in Sheriff Hutton on the 1851 census born Terrington or what looks like Terrington for Christopher.
Christopher a lodger aged 35 ag lab and newly married with a young child
and
John aged 39 a rat catcher married with three young children.
These are the only Nelsons on the 1851 census who give a birthplace of Terrington.
Terrington parish registers are on the IGI between 1600-1863.
GEORGE NELSON

plus the marriage I'm sure you have spotted in Sheriff Huttton
GEORGE NELSON

The other Nelson Terrington baptisms are
WILLIAM NELSON

Christening: 12 JAN 1812 Terrington, Yorkshire
Father: JOHN NELSON
HANNAH NELSON
Christening: 03 APR 1837 Terrington, Yorkshire
Parents:
Father: JOHN NELSON
Mother: MARY
The National burial index covers Sheriff Hutton and Terrington between 1813-1837. Only the two James Nelson burials are in either parish for that period.
Coverage on the IGI for Sheriff Hutton parish registers is 1813-1856. Nelson baptisms in this period don't seem to start until 1828. These are the first two.
HENRY NELSON
Christening: 22 FEB 1828 Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire
Father: GEORGE NELSON
Mother: MARY
HANNAH NELSON
Christening: 20 AUG 1830 Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire
Father: GEORGE NELSON
Mother: ANN
The 1861 census shows George who previously gave his birthplace as Terrington still alive.
RG9 3628 folio 98
Sheriff Hutton Yorkshire
George Nelsen 82 Ripon, Yorkshire, Head Widower Ag lab
Cristopher Nelsen 46 Terington, Yorkshire, Son Widower Ag lab
Also in Sheriff Hutton is John aged 44 born Terrington with his wife and family and Robert aged 37 born Terrington with his wife and family.
On the 1871 census the only Nelsons born Terrington are Christopher and Robert, Christopher having remarried and moved away from Sheriff Hutton.
I suggest you request an 1841 census look up for Sheriff Hutton to see who George Nelson senior was living with on that census.

Valda

Hi Folks,
Has anyone any suggestions how I can trace the parents of George Nelson, b1779 in Terrington, Yorkshire?
He married Ann (Nanny) Thornbourn on 22/11/1804 (Martinmas week?) in Sheriff Hutton.
Both calvert and myself have come to a standstill on this.

Terrington baptismal register is covered by the IGI 1600-1863, Ripon registers are not. On the 1851 census George Nelson gives his birthplace as Terrington on the 1861 census he syas Ripon. Have you checked Ripon baptisms for circa 1779?

Although don't want to be led by the hand on this, can you explain how I should search the IGI, please. Is it the FamilySearch.org site I should be looking at? I did put George Nelson in the name search for the UK, but to no avail.
Also, where can I check the baptisms for Ripon around 1779?
Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

The IGI is the International Genealogical Index compiled by the Mormons. Family Search is where you find the IGI online which is a limited index of a large number of parish registers but by no means all.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
However I use Hugh Wallis' website because it allows you to just search individual parish registers indexed on the IGI and it also gives you the dates of coverage for the registers on the IGI.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/
Ripon parish registers will be deposited in the local county record office.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/CBW/WRY/Ripon.html
which I think in this case is North Yorkshire
