Title: Visiting Co. Kerry: local advice sought!
Post by: piedstilt on Thursday 30 March 06 08:09 BST (UK)
Hi all,

My husband and I will be visiting Ireland in June this year.  Very exciting!

My Irish roots are terribly distant (gg-grandfather went to Australia in 1833; g-grandfather to NZ 1880s) and although their family is reasonably well documented I'm not holding out too many hopes of finding any graves, etc. However, there is one lead I'd dearly love to follow up.

Ggg-grandmother Charlotte Morphy (nee Gallwey) was born c1785 in Killarney and died in 1839 at Mount Prospect, Co. Kerry. I can't find any modern reference to Mount Prospect - and I'm not even sure if it was the name of a place or perhaps the name of a property (I think they were reasonably well off). Does anyone have any ideas? And if someone died at Mount Prospect where would they be buried?

Any other general advice about good local sources of information would be more than welcome.

Many thanks,

Ros

Hiya Ros,

The Tralee accommodation listings  (http://www.ilta.net/EdTech2004/EdTech2004Accomm.pdf) show Mount Prospect Farmhouse, Caherbreagh, Tralee (0044 6671 22672) Would that be the place ???  Unfortunately there is no website  The Farmhouses in Co. Kerry website  (http://irelandwelcomesyou.com/Travel/farmhouses/kerryfarm.htm) show
that the guest house end of the business is run by Mrs Maureen O'Connor and is open Mid May to October.

All the Best, Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for that address - I had spotted that and it is worth checking out! We are staying in Killarney (rather briefly, unfortunately) so I thought I'd head straight for the local library to see if they can shed some light.

thanks for your interest,

Ros

Unfortunately I am reading your request a bit late. (for your trip to Kerry) in June.
If it helps, yes, there is/was a house named
Mount Prospect.
It is in Castleisland, which is a few miles from Killarney.
The house was also known as
Ballinvariscal House.
The address is Nohaval Castleisland.
located 5 km west from Castleisland.
It is still standing and inhabited.
The Lehihan Family bought the property in the early 1900s and still reside there.

Hello Ros,

Did you have a good time in Kerry? Have you made further progress with your research?

Hi Trailite and Chris,

Thanks both for your messages. Yes, we have been to Kerry and back and had a wonderful time.

My best genealogical 'find' was the ruin of Dunloe Castle, where my gx4 grandmother (Maria Mahony,  mother of Charlotte Gallwey) was born in 1758. Took some great photos (and a great deal of ribbing about the 'ancestral castle' from my travelling companions).

We tried and tried to find Mount Prospect House! Came to the conclusion that it was probably no longer called that but still had absolutely no luck. We went to Castleisland, where we gave a lift to an old farmer who was hitchhiking into town. Although we could barely understand each other he made it very clear that he simply didn't believe that my husband's family farm was over 5000 acres (kept asking new questions about the '500-acre farm' ...) We then went on to Tralee, again with no luck. Picked up a few vague directions but after driving round and round all that area we eventually gave up. Thanks for the up-to-date info Trailite. We'll just  have to come back!

The most amusing moment was when we checked into our backpackers' hostel in Killarney and the girl behind the desk (who looked vaguely familiar) said 'I went to school with your daughter!' She turned out to be a check-out person from our local supermarket in Christchurch!

Loved Ireland - will do our best to get back one day.

Cheers,

Ros

Ros,

There's a RootsChat meet in Dublin next year so even if you can't make it back to Ireland so soon tell all your friends all about your trip to Ireland and how much you enjoyed it as well as telling them about RootsChat and the meet. If the membership continues its rapid rise and we have a good Dublin meet in 2007 we will aim at one in 2008 and then 2009 and so on. There's nothing like spreading the word. Hopefully there will be a meet in Ireland the next time you come so that the Irish members of RootsChat may have the pleaure of saying "Hello, Ros. How are you? We are delighted to meet you" as they shake your hand.

Chris

Thanks for your Good Wishes, Ros.

I realise the budget wont allow you to come back so soon but at this end we'll do our best to make sure there is a Meet in Ireland when you are able to come. Sure now we might even plan a welcoming party to meet you at the airport.

Ggg-grandmother Charlotte Morphy (nee Gallwey) was born c1785 in Killarney and died in 1839 at Mount Prospect, Co. Kerry.

Do you have any information about the Morphy family that Charlotte married into.  We're interested in a Margaret Morphy, who married Cornelius Groves of Ballymacelligott, Co. Kerry in the late 19th Century.

I may be a bit late for you but I was in Ireland a few years ago and found Ballivariscal (Mountprospect)  There is a book called "Houses of Kerry" I think.  It has a diagram and a short history of the house.  It was in a local genealogical library in Sydney and you may be ble to track it down.  If not,  I can send a photo.

Hi Ros,

I read your post about Charlotte Murphy being your great grandmother.  I am researching this family at the moment.  I have come accross a will for John Morphy Killarney where he speaks about his son leaving for New South Wales.  I am going to attach it to this post.  I have never used this chat room service before so I am a little unsure about whether you will recieve this message and copy of will.  If you could get in contact with me I will let you know more about the gallwey/murphy/mahony connection

I'm not surprised that Mount Prospect couldn't be found.  It was built by the Morphy family in the 18th century, it was occupied by a Walter Morphy in Grffith's valuation about 1850 but now no trace remains.  If anyone wants to visit the site it was in the townland of Ballynamaunagh in the civil parish of Kilcummin on the Krnmare estate.  The Morphys were middlemen on the estate, that is to say they leased large areas from the head landlord (Earl of Kenmare) and then rented it out to smaller tnants.  Three sons of the John Morphy who lived in Mt. Prospect emigrated to NSW in the 1830's and married 3 Styles sisters when they got there.  One of my great grandmothers was a Catherine Gallwey, a niece of the Charlotte who married John Morphy.  The Gallweys were Agents of the Kenmare estate for 3 generations.  The Gallweys were Catholic and the Morphys Protestant but there don't seem to have been any hard feelins all round.  I suppose you could class them all as half-gentry.

Just a note on the above.  Griffith (1853) shows Mt.Prospect being vacant and in possesson of Dr Walter Murphy, one of the executors of John's will. (One of John's daughters had married Thadee Murphy of Killarney)   It is described as having a gate-lodge, stabling etc. clearly a Gentleman's residence.  Not a single Morphy in Ireland in the 1901 census or perhaps they had all been recorded as Murphys.  As for burials, the Gallweys are buried in Muckross Abbey, I presume Kilcummin for the Morphys.  Kilcummin is about 4 miles from Killarney on the Millstreet road.  If you have a large-scale map, look for the townland of Ballynamannagh

Hi Anthony,

I'm so sorry I never got back to you or the others about your useful and interesting information. It has been some time since I was on Rootschat. My wider family demonstrated little interest in all my discoveries and with earthquakes etc (Christchurch) I more or less dropped my research. Now I am all fired up again and planning (well, dreaming about) another trip to Ireland!

Many thanks,

Ros

Hello Ros

A few years have passed since you were looking for Mount Prospect, and you may by now be aware that there was a Mount Prospect in Killarney, associated with many names including Morphy.  There is a lengthy note about Mount Prospect Killarney and associated names in the book The Church of Ireland in Co Kerry a record of church & clergy in the nineteenth century (2011) pp349-358.

All the best.
