Title: John Edlin born 1765 Harefield?
Post by: behindthefrogs on Wednesday 29 March 06 18:29 BST (UK)
John Edlin was born around 1765 and died in 1821.  He was married three times in Ickenham in 1792, 1803 and 1819.  My problem is where was he born and who were his parents.

I have looked at the Ickenham parish registers and he is not there.  The most likely place is Harefield folowed by Ruislip and Hillingdon.  I would be grateful if anyone with access to these registers could check for me.

There were two John Edlins born in Rickmansworth around this period.  The one born 1767 married Elizabeth Ive and the one born 1768 married Sarah, and so these two can be eliminated.

Thank you sheddyg.  The family was in the area for 300 years previous to 1765 and so he must be there somewhere.

There are a few non-herts (inc Harrow) Edlin names on HALS Names

Thank you IJ.  I have a huge history of the Edlin family and moving John's family to Harrow makes it more likely that he is related to the line that founded the main USA line.

Maybe, but I am only interested in a more direct line and the family of John Edlin were subsequently born in Ickenham, Middx, then Ruislip as in  Albert Edward in 1863.

The John Edlin I am descended from was born in 1765 in St. Mary, Harrow, baptized 5th June 1765 and died 3rd June 1821. This is the John that married 3 times and only 1 of his children (as far as I can tell) survived, i.e. William 1803-1870.

My wife's family is also descended from William, John's only surviving son. I am having a little difficulty in tracking down your Albert Edward, who were his parents?  I thought that I had a complete tree of John's descendants.

In view of the burial that I mentioned previously, I am fairly certain that you have the wrong parents for John but I have no alternatives.

Albert Edward Edlin 1863-1917, was the 8th child of Thomas Edlin & Sarah Edwards.  He was born 19th Dec in Ruislip and died 19th June in Salisbury, Wilts.  He married Emmeline Shergold in 1885.  He started out working as a Labourer then became a Police Constable in the Met.  He retired early and was then an Insurance Agent.

Thank you for that.  I had him as Edward  Albert and was further confused by the fact that his birth wasn't registered until Q1 1864.
