Title: 1871 census Liverpool- 24 Howe Street Everton- hercules
Post by: ekell3 on Friday 08 October 04 21:56 BST (UK)
I am looking for my mothers grandfather and great grandfather who were living in the Liverpool area in 1873 when her grandfather was married. I would be really very grateful if any one could offer any info on the following

my mothers grandfather was
Joseph Alexander Hercules married in Liverpool 1873 age 26 to Elizabeth Cain formerly of the Isle of Man

On one record the name John Alexander Hercules appears, he was born about 1846, but there's notrace of any birth certificate, I know he died in 1886 aged 40

his father is registered on the marriage certificate as
Charles Hercules  a grocer living in Liverpool. I have no age and no area of birth/nationality for Charles

The address on the certificate is 24 Howe Street Everton

this is as far back as I can trace. I have carried out a wide range of searches on the name, the ones that exist after that date are all my mum's relatives including her father.

Her grandfather is believed to have been born in Greece so that could be either Joseph or Charles or both. I haven't had any luck tracing any info on either

can any one help?..please!....many thanks...ekell3

thanks for this Donna, Elizabeth Cain is my mum's grandmother who was married to Joseph in 1873 and the address on the certificate is 24 Howe Street , so it looks like Joseph might have been lodging with his in laws when they married. He was a seaman and it looks like Elizabeth lived with her parents when he was away at sea.

I can't find any trace of Joseph's birth around 1846, he was 26 when he married. Also I can't find any trace of Charles the father. Do you have any suggestions at all? Also, how can I get hold of early census material like this for Liverpool, do I need to visit the FHC in Liverpool or can you buy copies? your hel is much appreciated thanks and regards ekell3

i have access to the 1871 and 1891 and 1901 censuses.

But yes you can buy the censuses there are various places that sell them this is a well known one www.genealogysupplies.com  but there are others listed in the links somewhere on rootschat

I also have 1861, 51 and 41 for lancashire but not all are indexed so that can make it difficult sometimes there are lots of genealogy stuff for sale on ebay if you just put genealogy into the search box.

Quite often my ancestors seem to just use an address for the purpose of marriage but actually never appeared to live there ....most frustrating

I tried many spellings and combinations of names but could find no Hercules in 1871 sorry

My mother's grandparents were also Joseph Alexander Hercules and Elizabeth Cain. Charles Hercules was the father
of Joseph and is listed as a grocer in Liverpool. The Cain family
came from Douglas IOM. I have been searching in particular
for the origins of the Hercules family pre- Howe Street, L'pool but without succes to date. Our family story was that the Hercules were Italian but this name is Ercoli in Italy and in Greece I understand it is Herakles. Possibly it was anglicized by
an immigrant in the UK. The Liverpool Record Office say there is no listing of Joseph Alexander Hercules in the death at sea indexes.

Hi, I lived in 23 Howe Street Liverpool from 1942 to 1966. These houses were called scotch houses being one house on top of another, they had one bedroom ,living room and kitchen, outside loo & no bathroom only gas lighting. A family named Ainsworth lived above us in no.24 next to the entry.
Although the street was a long street the scotch houses were few, numbering only approx 12 altogether. Howe Street was classed as the hillside as it ran from Great Homer Street up to Netherfield Road.
Hope this gives you some idea of the type of abode we endured.
