Hi Russell
Are you still looking for this?
I'm going to Ealing library and if you still need this, may be able to do a look-up for you.
Let me know ;)

Hi Dawn
That would be great thankyou, i am still looking for this marriage. According to the census there eldest child was born there in 1766, so i am hoping that they were married there about 1766.
Thank you so much for your kind offer
best wishes Russell

Hi Russell
Unusually, Holy Cross Greenford have not deposited their original registers for sake-keeping.
At Ealing library where they have a local history centre, I checked out Phillimores Parish Registers Middlesex Marriages Vol1 but there are no entries after December 1764 and before February 1767 :(
However, don't give up just yet. I know of the vicar at the church, our paths crossed last year, so I've emailed him to ask his advice, charges etc
His reply is that he has passed my (your) request to the parish archivist.
I'll let you know what happens.

I have received the following reply from Holy Cross
" * * has forwarded your e-mail re Robert Ambrose and Elizabeth Marnham, etc to me, we usually ask for a small donation to church funds if we are successful.
I can arrange to look up the necessary books etc. Look forward to hearing from you
Best Wishes"
Please let me know as soon as possible if you are willing to make a small donation.
To be completely honest, as they have the originals and no copies have been deposied anywhere this is the only way to find out for sure.

Hi Dawn
That is unusual isn't it. Thank you so much for your time and effort and for contacting the vicar of the church for me. Yes I would be happy to make a donation to the church for there help, if they could let you know an address to send a cheque to.
Thanks once again, your help is really much appreciated
best wishes

Hi Russell
The registers are still at the Parish because the PCC have decided not to deposit them. As a result the church get many requests for look-ups, especially from America, and requests to see the books themselves which they try to accomodate. However, some of the books are in a sad state of repair and taking copies is tricky, photocopying is often not an option so the archivist uses a digital camera.
So, I have received an email from Holy Cross Greenford with a copy of the entry in their Banns Book from 1766 for Robert Ambrose and Elizabeth Marnham. Can you send me a personal message with your email address so I can send it directly to you?
Their entry is in the standard format for that time and no actual date of marriage is shown. As the banns were published 3 times you can assume that they were considered married either at the very end of December or very early into January.
The photo is slightly cropped and, as far as I can tell, 'Banns' is missing from the top left, as are the first letters of 'published' on the third line and from the right, the last letters of the curate's name 'Campbell'. No other vital information is missing.
The archivist is still looking for a baptism, do you have a name to go on?
He will email with their address when this is all sorted.
Hope this helps.

Hi Dawn
Thats brilliant!!, you can email me direct at (Email removed. Please use Personal Messaging system to exchange personal information.) The name for the baptism is John Ambrose in about 1766/7 whether he had siblings i do not know.
Thanks for all your help with contacting the church for me. I wonder why they haven't deposited them at the records office?
many thanks

Hi Russell & Rick
I am still working with the archivist at Holy Cross, but both he and I have been on holiday at different times and more updates are due soon.
Russell, if you want to consider this complete, that's fine by me, I can contact you directly with more info when I get it.

Message from Mazlyt :)
Holy Cross Church of England, Greenford, England (Banns read 15 Dec, 22 Dec and 29 Dec 1766).
Banns used to be read the 3 weeks proceeding the wedding. I have an approximate date of Jan 1767.

According to his profile, Russell hasn't been online here since 2010.
Since that time, the London Anglican registers have gone online so I checked again.
Robert Ambrose bachelor of Great Greenford and Elizabeth Marnham spinster of St Mary's parish, Harrow on the Hill were married at St Marys on 5 Jan 1766. Both signed the register and the witnesses were James Dee (X) and John Ambrose who signed.

And to add to that, there is the baptism of John Ambrose 30 Nov 1766 to Robert and Elizabeth.
He seems to have the siblings:
Robert (bt 9 Oct 1768)
Mary (bt 28 Oct 1770)
Sarah (bt 12 Apr 1772)
Moses (bt 2 May 1773)
Edward (bt 28 Apr 1776)
James (bt 3 Dec 1778)
