Hi fellow Irish searchers. I have recently been able to (vaguely) pinpoint when my O'Haras came from Ireland to Scotland. Up until now I have just been told that O'Hara is an Irish name, yet my family came to Scotland for whatever reason (verbal stories vary from the family being Irish aristocracy and being kicked out of Ireland to famine forcing them to leave, etc.)
At any rate, I am searching for a Patrick O'Hara.
On the 1861 Scottish Census, I have located his name and that of his second wife Ann. The Scottish Census lists him as being 52, a Money Lender and being born in Ireland (no location, just the country name).
Patrick O'Hara was married to Catherine Ann O'Neill (another Irish surname I have not yet begun to search) in 1841 in Scotland.
Patrick's Father was Edward O'Hara. His mother was Sarah Bashford. I have no BMD on either of them.
Can anyone provide any help on my O'Hara in Ireland? I am in Canada, so a visit to the national archives wouldnt be possible at this time. :)
Thanks.

Not much help, but I noticed your posting because I have both a Patrick O'Hara, and an O'Neill, among my lot -- distant cousins, by marriage. They were both located in the Co. Carlow/Laois area. Both of these surnames are fairly common throughout Ireland, so you would really need some other item of info, to get started. Your ancestors probably went to Scotland for the simple reason of looking for work , like so many others! In the past, there was a regular movement of workers(seasonal) between the northern parts of Ireland and Scotland, so there's a possibility of some connection there.
Best of luck.

Your welcome Katie, its just a pity it didnt say where in ireland he was born and i notice that Patrick Married in 1841 and John Married in 1867 i wonder if there was a big age gap between the two? or maybe it was a second marriage for John.
My Grt grandfathers sister was 25 years older than him, he was born june 1865 and her husband was his sponsor at Baptism, she had a son in sept 1866 and he was Sponsor at my grt grandas wedding in 1893 ;D
