hi i am a new member today, and i need help with a marraige cert i obtained from 1837 overseas. My g/grandfather born Liverpool was married at the Roman catholic chapel Newbridge to Mary tougher on 18th Sept 1881 they must of moved to India straight after because 3 of the 4 children were born in Dum Dum. the problem i have is the Marriage cert only has info on the groom there is a line through the brides details and i only know her name because of the entry at the bottom saying "this marriage was solomised between us signed William Hogan & Mary Tougher" is there any way to find a full cert with Marys details on? and why would they not be added? is this because the army would have no need of her info?would they have married on site or in a local church?i am at a loss with this one and cannot move on ???Please advise!!!!!....mo-jo

I think that the marriage would have to have been registered with the Irish GRO as well.

Thanks for that Joe,
I will send an email off to them.
do you think i would be able to obtain another cert from these places using the army overseas ref, which is just a year and a page number? or would i have to do a new search?........Mo-jo
-
Hi Mo-Jo,
The overseas reference number that you have won't be of any use.......just give as much detail as you have.
Date, place, names of people who married etc.
Joe

thank you so much for your help Joe, i will send off ASAP for that other cert....mo-jo

Hi Mo-Jo,
No problem....I forgot to mention that there forms on the GRO Ireland site that you can print out to fill in and post.

Mo Jo
I could help noticing the name Tougher.
If it is any help to you I do know that there is a family buisness (same name) which has been 'there forever' sited on the main Naas to Newbridge Road. It is a resturaunt & motel, simply called 'Trougher's.
The church in Newbridge which you refer to is also still there.

Thanks Billie Jo,
i have written to the Tougher family in Newbridge a few weeks ago, someone gave me the address, its a truck stop or shop, i haven't had a reply yet. i have also been in contact with a man from the Curragh family history and emailed the cert to him, he is going to check it against parish records in Newbridge, i am really excited as this was one branch of the tree i thought was lost forever! without this site and a lady called Janet from another site i would of left this alone......Mo-Jo

I'm afraid it's not a shop but you could say Hotel/motel 'truck stop' (up a level) - including a nice resturant where Families enjoy Sunday lunch (I did last week) not forgetting the celebration Dinner-dance with live band at Xmas. (It's a huge place)
Name also in the phone book which is possibly something like www.eircom.ie

Hello mo-jo,
Welcome to Rootschat. Members of the Anglican community worshipped at the St Pauls Garrison Church http://www.esatclear.ie/~curragh/stpauls.htm I cannot think of an obvious explanation for a line being drawn through Mary Toughers details.
I know that Tougher truck stop Billiejo. I worked with Hoffmans American Three Ring Circus and also their Russian Circus which toured Ireland several times. I was with the advance unit. We parked our caravans there and used it as our base for a few days when we were putting posters in the shops in the area. Is there still a pleasant hotel close to the truck stop..on the same side of the road..within walking distance..a couple of minutes walk ???

That was called the 'Red House' and afraid it burned to the ground a couple of years ago. Luckily no fatalities.

I am fairly certain that the Marriage cert details have no relation to army protocol. I notice that the chaple you mention is in Newbridge. This is about 3 miles outside the camp. The RC facilities are indeed very old and I sadly forget the names albeit I will seek the answer and inform at a later time.
I am certain that the bride would have been from the town as the custom back then was for the lady to be married in HER home town, following three consequetive 'Banns readings' in church.
I think the manager of the 'Whitewater Hotel' formally the 'Grand Hotel' (Main St. Newbridge, Co Kildare, Eire) is the address, & JUST MIGHT have some info that could help. I believe he is interested in this topic and his family have been there for generations. Has to be worth a try.

Thanks to everyone for their kind advice, i have sent a copy of the cert to someone who said they would look the records up for me, that was in march, he hasn't replied and i feel cheeky emailing him again, do you think i should of offered a payment?I think maybe i am just too impatient, billiejo i will write to the address you have mentioned as i am 100% sure mary Tougher was a local girl as i have searched all the english records and can find no trace of her only william before marriage and then the both of them afterwards,do you think that bieng illegitimate (williams parents married after having 4 children)could have some baring on the way the marriage was registered? maybe marys parents wanted nothing to do with her, and refused to have their names on the cert, just a thought, i will keep you informed on any out come...thanx again..mojo

All Curragh Camp marriages are registered at the Naas office.
-
Thanks billie-jo, i sent off an email and the person had not even recieved my cert(all that waiting) so i have re sent it last week, and the waiting starts again, if i don't recieve any joy i will look down other avenues.. thanks again for your help and advice, i will post any news as soon as i get it....mo-jo

Hi
You Will find the information you're looking for on the following link.
Marriage cert for William Hogan 1881 the Curragh.
If you also search Mary Tougher only one comes up for 1881 so i'm sure this is what your after.
You can purchase the image fo 5 euro
good luck .liz

the entry for both William Hogan and Mary Tougher have the same code (when you hover the cursor over "view") ... 410825 ...
so I think it's pretty certain that it's the same marriage

Thanks for bringing this back into my mind, i couldn't obtain a cert as my card wasn't listed :(

mo-jo
-
this tells you haw to pay for certs at the Gen Reg Office
http://www.groireland.ie/fees.htm
not sure how brsgenealogy works for payment
eadaoin
-
for brsbrsgenealogy / www.irish-roots.net you register to access the search functions and if required pay for credits - which then get used up each time you view a record details.

New address for registration of Births Deaths Marriages and certificates of same. For Curragh Camp Co Kildare = Leinster provence.
Health Service Executive Superintendent Registrars' Offices.
Eastern Area.
Lombart Street East.
Dublin 2

I'm not sure if Lombard Street does photocopies. I know they do certs, at least, current certs - but certs are dearer ?10euro, while photocopies are 4euro.
The research part of GRO used to be in Lombard St, but moved to Irish Life Centre some time ago.

I think the registration offices like the one in Lombard Street are used for current registrations - and look after certs required for official purposes eg. passports, wills etc. These are certified copies not photocopies.
as eadaoin mentioned to do your reseach call to the GRO offices in The Irish Life Centre, or write to the head office in Roscommon.
