Title: Priests and training for Ministry
Post by: mellishbute on Thursday 23 March 06 21:06 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help me, I am trying to find out about where people of the 1880's would have gone to train as a priest.

Also looking to find lists of when priests were ordained, firstly at St Paul's Cathedral for 1882/3 - name of Arthur Herbert Mellish.

Also lists of Bishops and ministers of the church for 1800's - name of Mellish

You need to look for a Crockford's clerical directory.
There is a website but it is ppv

Libraries likely to have a copy

For earlier dates there is a website Clergy of the Church of England database

http://www.theclergydatabase.org.uk/

My ancestor George Boyce did not have a degree.

They could get a degree or study Theology in quite a lot of places

We have an 1897 Crockfords in the University Library here at Lampeter - it'll tell you when someone was ordained, and should have details of where studied.
I'll try and have a look this afternoon for you

Crockfords 1865  has only William John Mellish, Orston Vicarage, Newark, Notts and William Peachey Mellersh Shipton Rectory,  Andoversford, Glouc.   Both studied at Cambridge University.   Cambridge alumni are on the ancestry.co.uk site.   Just looking at that particular page in Crockford all the men had been to Oxford, Cambridge or London universities.
There are three Melhuish entries, Charles of Highbray Barnstaple, George Edward of Bradford- on- Avon and Thomas Bremridge, Poughill Rectory Crediton.  Again, all Oxbridge.

I looked up Arthur Herbert Mellish but he's not in the Crockfords of 1897 and we don't have any before that on the reference shelves.

Sorry couldn't help further on this one.

I have a book entitled "A History of Training for the Minisitry of the Church of England 1875-1974" by F.W.B.Bullock, publ. 1976 by Home Words Limited, London, and it is clear that as well as at Oxford, Cambdige, London and Durham universities, one could train at many theological colleges up and down the country.

If you would like to know the possibilities I can list them for you.

Some of these various Theological Colleges still exist, some have merged with others, and some have sunk without trace.
