Hello lanarman,

What denomination were your Campbell and Netterfield ancestors? Were they members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), Methodists or possibly Presbyterians?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hello Christopher:
Thanks for responding.  The Campbells and Netterfields were members of the Church of England. John Campbell born c. 1788 in Belturbet. His wife Mary Netterfield, daughter of Isaac Netterfield from Templeport, Ballyconnel, Co. Cavan. She may have been born in Redhills, near Belturbet.  Emigrated to Canada c. 1824.
Do you suppose that Anglican church records exist for this area of Co. Cavan and if so, do you know where I could write to to get copies of birth registrations?

Thanks again
Michael (lanarman)

Hi Michael,

A Church of Ireland page on Parish Records - Earliest Dates shows Cavan - Annagh (Belturbet) - 1801 http://irelandgenealogyprojects.rootsweb.com/Old/coirecs.html
There's no mention of the location of the records but the site has a link to the Church of Ireland and the RCB Library who should be able to tell you where the records are located.

Good day Christopher:
Thanks for sending me the link to the Church of Ireland. If I interpret the website info. correctly, the BMD's for Annagh, Belturbet, Co. Cavan after 1801 are also located at PRONI.  Since I also have Ballymena, Co. Antrim ancestors (BMD's and a ships list in 1852 for the PAUL family to Canada are required), a letter to PRONI might solve all my genealogy problems at once!
Thanks again,
Sincerely,
Michael

Hi Donna,

I,m new to this avenue of exploration so I have no idea if I,m following the proper procedure. My name is Douglas Campbell and I live in Brockville Ontario, Leeds County in Eastern Ontario along gthe north shore of the St. Lawrence River. I have traced my Campbell roots through John Campbell (m Mary Netterfield) from James Campbell who came to Belturbet in 1690 with (or shortly after the arrival of) William of Orange. There is also, I believe, a brother George who came with him. I'm not sure if I have the line of succession exactly right but some 134 years later my G-G Grandfather John Campbell and his wife Mary Netterfield left Belturbet and came directly to what is now Bastard Township in Leeds County in the Province of Ontario.I have identified three lots which they occupied before settling on the one that is to this day occupied by their descendants.

With respect to the Netterfields I have names but no clear idea of relationships. Where exactly does Mary fit in ? What of preceeding generations. I know the family became quite well of and some of them at least moved to Dublin as the century progressed. Some also arrived in Bastard Township I think in 1846. I have a suspicion that they may have been a quite interesting bunch.  It is apparent also that as immigration continued some of the Campbell and Netterfield clans moved on from Bastard to newly open farmlands around Wingham in southwestern Ontario in the 1840s/50s.

I have more detailed information  so if we establish contact perhaps we can share.

Doug Campbell

There is plenty on the internet about them, they were RC and C of I.

I only spotted the name when looking for someone else. A few on 1901 Census, have you looked there?

Why not Google them on the Irish Google Engine? I did and got 11,700 results...
www.google.ie and searched for "Netterfield" AND "Cavan"  You could use other keywords too.

I am looking for info regarding Campbell's in Belturbet.  What I know of my Campbell family is,  Jane Campbell, daughter of James and Anna Campbell, born in 1824.  It seems Doug is able to go back to the 1690's, I am curious if anyone else is able to trace the Campbell's in Belturbet back that far?
Thank you,
Matt

Hello Doug,

You mentioned a James Campbell that came to Belturbet in 1690.  I was wondering what else you know about James Campbell if you wouldn't mind sharing.  Do you know exactly where he was from?  Religion?  Age? Married?  Children?   Why did he come to Ireland?

Thank you,
Matt

Hi Matt,
My information regarding our Campbell ancestors came from a gentleman by the name of Shane McGovern.(*) This individual seems to be the unofficial historian of the Town of Belturbet in County Cavan where our forebear lived when they came to Ireland. Belturbet was apparently founded in the early 17th century by Protestants who more or less colonized much of Northern ireland and a good portion of Eire.  Strangely enough this chap now lives in western Quebec. I live in the City of Brockville, on ,a few miles away. Both places of course being in Canada.
The man's sister who is also a McGovern ( I can't remember her last name) lives in Cavan city and is also conversant in Belturbet history. You could contact her through (*).
Anyway, the aforesaid Shane McGovern created a collection of historical papers regarding the town and published it as "The Town Book of the Borough of Belturbet". The cost was 100 Cdn dollars. I have more info. My address is (*).

Hello Doug

I have sent you a Personal Message but I now realise that you may not yet be able to receive them. So here is tn updated version of the main part, in case you - or any other participants in this discussion - can provide any further information:

I think my 3G-grandfather was James Campbell born in Co Cavan around 1800. I saw that one of the postings mentioned his wife as being called Anna. My family's recollections mention an Anna (though on the other side of the family, but I think have now dis-proven that!) and that Anna was German and a Ladies' Maid. I know there was a James Campbell with a wife Anna (or Anne) living in Belturbet. I would really like to discover whether this was in fact the German Ladies' Maid, and to fill in various gaps in my research!

Hi Paul:
Hope you are still on the boards- just wondering if you ever solved your Campbell in Belturbet mystery? I am descended from the John Campbell-Mary Netterfield family from the Belturbet area and was also trying to contact Col. Doug. Just found out he passed away last year. I believe that 1822 or 1823 was the year that my Campbells emigrated to Canada. Also trying to connect with the Shane McGovern gentleman who has the history of Belturbet but now lives in Canada. Hi Lanarman

Yes, I'm still on the boards! (Sounds like I'm an old-time variety hall player!)

Unfortunately I haven't been able to progress my Belturbet enquiries any further - I have not been able to find any records that might help, although I understand that the Johnston Library in Cavan might have relevant information. I just haven't had the opportunity to get over there (I live in France).

Sorry to learn about Col. Doug. If I remember rightly, his sister was looking after family history material at the Johnston Library (though I could be wrong about that!), though I don't see any specific mention on the library site. Could be worth checking with the library though.

I'm afraid I can't help you regarding Shane McGovern either. The site he had created (belturbet.org) now appears to be defunct and a quick Google didn't reveal anything useful. The last contact (e-mail) I had with both Shane and Doug was back in 2012.

I wish you success with your research nonetheless!

Hi Paul: That was fast! Thanks for replying. I'm not much further ahead in my research, either. It was Shane McGovern's sister that worked at the Cavan Library. Col. Doug was a distant cousin to my wife and he and I corresponded many years ago.

I note in the Irish Tithe Applotment documents a James Campbell in Annagh in 1825 and again in nearby Killashandra in 1832. Lord Gosford was the landlord. You can see the original scanned images online at Family Search.

It's highly possible that James was a brother or cousin of John. And somehere I saw reference to a Gustavus Campbell (or Netterfield) so thats a strange combination of German-Irish and he may relate to your German born Anna. ?  I will see if I can find that reference and get back to you.

Best regards,
Lanarman

Paul:  Found this in my notes and confirmed it on the Public Record Office (PRONI) website:

Gustavus Campbell. Kilmore Diocesean Wills, Cavan. Will 1823.  Probated 1825. The original documents do not exist.
