Righty-oh all you photo dating experts ;D
Here is your next challenge. Now, I don't have an exact year for this one, but I'm certain within 2 years either side of a given year, so you have some leeway ;)
This time, as well as guessing, I want you to write down a few of the things that led you to the conclusion you drew.
GOOD LUCK :)

1872. I have a similar one of my GG Grandmother taken in the early 1880s, but that one just looks older.
-
Hi,
I'd guess 1889...because of the lace. ;D ;D
Romilly.
-
Mid to late 1870s, again because of the lace and hair style.
Coming down on 1877.

1878 - and like the others, just gut instinct - that's probably why I have been so far off ;D
Steph.
-
1889 1895 at a guess :D
-
Well Prue!
I'm scared NOT to say Irish now ...... and seeing as how the photograph was taken in Southport - which is close to Liverpool - which is the capital of Ireland .... :P ;)
It's my opinion ...... she's Irish 1898
Annie :) :) :) :) :) :)

Well, I'm way out of line with everyone else's guesses - but the high neck, side bow and lace collar(s) make her look borderline late Victorian/early Edwardian to me. I say 1902.

at a guess and a stab with a blunt pin I would say about 1888. Why that date........well, Bickerstaffe is noted as the photographer and, in or around 1890 he also had a studio in Rochdale, as this is not shown on the front of the card (not too hot on this but is it a cart de visite? or something like that) I would assume that it was taken prior to the Rochdale studio opening.

Hi

Cal (p.s. she ain't one of my ancestors ;) )

Hubby's guess because of the lace. 1860 - 1865. (At least he's interested )
-
Nice one Carol, glad we got hubby interested (boys do love a competition ::) ;D )
-
I was only four years out last time 8)
I think this one is 1890 because of the high neck dress.

I have a very similar photo of my Uncle Jack - nice bloke - about 1895.
Did I get in intime?
-
1887 - 'cos of the lace and the hairstyle and gut feeling - which also tells me I'm probably way out . . . . . Again!!

Paul
Think you've still been on something ;D
Your Uncle Jack in 1895 - looking like this delicate young lady - the mind boggles ;D ;D ;D
-
I think its somewhere between 1882 and 1890 , think it is a carte de visite and if I am only allowed one date 1885

LOL everyone, and Paul...let's not stereotype the blokes, if ladies can wear trousers then we can allow Paul's uncle to wear a lacy frock! ;D
I'm going to put you all out of your misery now. Ready...?
This is Elizabeth McKay, a first cousin of my grandad Harry McKay. She was born in 1881, and we think this photo was taken on her 18th birthday. So, give or take two years, that puts the date range at 1897-1901.
And the winner is.....ANNIE! Elizabeth wasn't Irish, but you got the date at least!!! Perserverance pays off! Here is a Nobel Prize in Dating Photographs for you, Annie!
Everyone else, well done - I will post another one soon. I think you're gettting addicted! ;D
Thanks for playing!

I read that vertical pleats on the bodice are middle 1890's.
I have a photo of a young lady( grandmother) taken also at the end of the 19th C in a white dress (that might have pleats on the bodice) high neck/collar looks plain, slight leg o' mutton sleeves, and hair piled up on top of her head under a hat with flowers. She told me (when I was a little girl )that when a young lady reached the age of 16, she was no longer a child and therefore it was the day she could "put up her hair". It was a big day for young ladies. :)

Oh well, I missed out...never mind I will try again :D
I am learning and I am quite happy with that. :)
Congrats Annie. ;D ;D ;D

Is there a way of telling whether a photo was taken a few years after the clothing style was fashionable or they were bang up to date :-\
Well done Annie - you've had a good weekend what with the Irish win as well ;D

Hi Gadget,
As far as I've been able to make out with the hundreds of photos I've looked at, there are only two ways to be 100% certain of an exact date, and they are to have a photo of a particular event for which you know the date, or to have the date written on the back by someone who knew what it was (e.g. it was written on at the time).
You can use a combination of fashions in hair and clothing, posing styles, photograph type, photo size, mounting style (e.g. on a card, postcard, not stuck to anything), photographer's details, and decoration on the card to guess at a date pretty near to when the photo was taken, but it's pretty hard to be 100% sure. If it was that easy, we wouldn't have these fun little contests would we! ;) ;D

Where's that drawing board, I need it again!! Only 10 years out this time, I'm getting closer.
Thanks Prue, these are fun (even if I am wrong ALL the time)
Congratulations Annie, well 8) done.

It really is fun Prue, thanks ever so for doing this - keep 'em coming :)
I just had this thought that, although people were likely to put on their best bib and tucker for photos then, there would be variations in dress because of (say) distance from the fashion centres - rural, the then-colonies, wealth etc. Though I expect teh poor didn't have many photos taken of them.
Thanks for your reply

;D id say late Victorian/early Edwardian by the lace and the style of the sitting.
