Title: master hairdresser
Post by: clark1 on Wednesday 15 March 06 20:35 GMT (UK)
My grandfather was a Master Hairdresser from the 1920's onwards.
Does anyone know if there are records kept anywhere with regard to hairdressers qualifying in those days.

Thank you
Linda

I too would be interested in any information on hairdressers (but a bit earlier) as my 2g gfather was, according to family story, a hairdresser who travelled widely thoughout Europe hairdressing for the European monarchy.  He was Wm Major probably b c1840 & m8/3/1863 when his occupation was a hairdresser.  His daughter b1/4/1868 was brought up by her aunt so we assume that her mother died in childbirth (no record though) & he couldnt look after her because of his travelling.
Any info welcome
Tony

http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl?sub=search_catalogue_index&args=hairdressers - there's a Hairdressers Guild mentioned here.  Further searching in the Times shows that in 1908 it was more properly the Guild of Hairdressers and Wigmakers (later add an 'and perfumers' to that), and they still exist today.

http://www.hairguild.co.uk/ - you could contact them and see if they know where the old records were kept.  They might still be held by the company.

They would not have had to been a member of the company, but it's a possiblity. The other thing is that you could check trade directories if your grandfather ran his own shop, and then look for other information about that business.

I have only just joined this web chat site and am currently researching my family's history.

My great grandfather of Austrian descent (only found that out from the 1901 census - my family thought he was French!)  is listed as a Master Hairdresser in London on my grandmother's birth certificate of 1901. Did you have any success with the suggestions that jorose made regarding records kept at that time?

Sean

Sorry I haven't got any further with the hairdressers yet. I will keep you informed if I have any luck.
