I have just got a new computer (yey) but I can't find my original disk for Adobe Photoshop which I had on my old one :'(
How do I get it from the old one to the new one, making sure I collect all the necessary files?
Or is there somewhere I can 'obtain' a copy? ;)
-
I'm sure you will find that you must have the installation disk. Just ciopying will only place the files on the hard drive, with no entries in the registry.
There are sites with totaly illegal downloads of Photoshop, and this can attract a fine of £1,000. Also I am told they caryy vriuses and links to unsavoury web sites you cant get rid of.

Hi Spotty,
If you have a CD copier on your old machine,
burn the folder/folders to a disk. Put it in your new computer
and load them to the hard disk.Just check the size of the folders
don't exceed the capacity of the blank disk.
I have just bought a new computer and did this for programmes
where I was too idle to search for the originals.

Hi tomkin,
I can try that but I don't know how to make sure you have all the relevant folders, is it obvious?
Spots.

The only way to copy is to use a program such as Symantec Ghost, And take a copy of the disk partition, put it onto the new computer (using Ghost)
I havea similar problem, my old computer has Frotpage 2000
The disk has a scratch, so I can't install in onto the new computer

Hi Spotty,
Click on My Computer,
Click on hard drive (C:),
Click on programme files,
Look for folder Adobe.
Left click on that to open it.
see what folders are in that . look for a folder called Photoshop.
( if you right click on that a menu will appear. click on properties
at the bottom this will tell you the size of the folder for example
30 m.b. ) Burn the folder to c.d. or d.v.d.
Put the c.d . in your new computer , open it and click on the adobe folder and
see what happens. It should react like your original photoshop c.d. but sometimes
they like to make it difficult to prevent copying etc.
If so transfer the folder to you hard drive, open it and look for the setup icon
and then follow the instructions as normal.
Sometimes you have to experiment. I have left all files on my old computer and
transfer as and when required.
Also if you have a new computer you should have a help line. Give them a ring
and let them do it for you.Thats why you gave them your hard earned dosh.
Best of luck,
Tomkin

I'm sure you need an activation code/ref number.
Just checked. It appears when it's loading, so you could copy it.

I'm just copying it - I'll tell you what it does.

Hi Gadget,
Quite right mate. It all depends on how the O.E.M had
set up the original programme. Some you can do it with others you
can't. I am a law abiding bloke and do not agree with piracy but some of
these companies are trying to make it illegal for you to copy your own
software.
As to the site that Spotty has posted,I'll let some one else try it.

I've copied it but it doesn't work, it didn't even ask for a reg number ??? I can't find a set up icon
I didn't see any numbers when I was burning the disc (well I wasn't really looking too close). Where would that have been?
-
Hi Tomkin
Yea it's really getting difficult now :(
I'm on my relatively new laptop at the moment and managed to get Photoshop loaded from the original disk. Thank goodness it did have MS Office pre-installed.
Don't think I'm going to offer to check out Spotty's site either :-\
Some of these sites can be a bit iffy, Spotty. I'd go down the 'copy to CD from your Photoshop folder' route and file the CD away safely ;)

I'm trying again but this time copying 'common files' as well just incase the set up bit is in there.

What folders did you copy? There should be a set up there somewhere :-\
The number appears when you enter the package - on the Photoshop screen.
You couldn't go into the Photoshop folder and do a <print screen> , save the image and post it herecould you. We could then see what you have.

Got to go out for a bit. If you have probs when you've loaded all your files/folders, try clicking Photoshop.exe. It'll be in there somewhere :)

I've got version 5 to work but not 7?
I suppose its better than nothing!!
-
Hi Spotty,
Did you copy the full photoshop folder to your
new computer? You should have done it in one go.
If so, Click on start,
Click on all programmes,
see if Adobe is in the list, if it is follow the normal
link to activate the photoshop programme.
On reflection if you activate setup it wiil probably treat it
as a new programme and ask for a registration number.

Like Meldrew has said, just copying the files won't put anything into the registry, so the computer won't have a clue as to file locations, associations, permissions, or any of the other codes it needs to run. Most programs will need something in Registry to work
Paintshop Pro 8 does seem to work with just a straight-forward folder copy as I found last time I had to fix my machine, but I'd be very surprised if anything Adobe released didn't fill the registry with gunk and junk.
I'm in the same boat as you Spotty with regards to Photoshop, so its back to Paintshop for me when I get my computer back up and running (its feeling very sorry for itself at the mo and has decided to stop playing ball!)

Its not on my list of programmes just a folder on the desk top.
-
Hi Kizmiaz,
You are right mate, Adobe and Apple love to stop anybody doing
anything with their software even though it belongs to you.
Spotty, As I don't use Photoshop I can't say what their file system is
or how they construct the software commands. You may have to wait mate
for someone with more knowledge I'm afraid.
You said you got Adobe 5 to work. was this in the same folder as 7?
You also said the folder was on you desktop. It's no good there mate it wants
putting on your hard drive. when you put the disk in the drive make sure you copy the
folder to the c: drive not to desktop.
If it is the full folder and not just an icon, Then click on my computer.
you Will see the C: drive. Left click on the folder on your desktop, keeping the button
pressed, drag the folder over to the hard disk icon. then release the button.
If you have done this before you will know what i mean. If not, keep practising. when you have done that successfully check the programme list again,
let us know,

I've checked my disks and my PC. I'm sorry to say that if you haven't got 'set up' on your PC (in your Adobe PS folder) then there's nothing that you can really do- especially since they will require the activation key, which is on the disk.
The only thing that I can suggest - unless you are prepared to fork out another £500 plus - is to somehow use your old PC for Photoshop and transfer stuff, as needed, to your new Pc via a LAN, flash drive, CD, etc. If you have a LAN then you could access it that way, i think. I'm not up on LAN although I have one :-\
I use both Photoshop CS and Paintshop Pro. Paintshop Pro is really pretty good and more 'user friendly' - and much cheaper. Another alternative is Photoshop Elements which I got with a printer but don't tend to use. Again there's Picassa which has a good reputation and is free. Berlin Bob also recommends some other packages.
There's a lot of hype about Photoshop. Like all of these packages, it is only as good as the user and it really depends what you want to use it for.
Sorry about that.
