Title: Thomas Kendrick in Saskatoon
Post by: bellringer on Wednesday 15 March 06 11:31 GMT (UK)
I have identified Thomas in the 1901 Census UK.  I know he was born in Ysceifiog in Flintshire 28 April 1882.  He died in Saskatoon 8 Nov 1942 intestate, but I have a list of distribution of his assets by Retailers Trust Company.  I am trying to fill in the blank between 1901 and 1942 as by hearsay he was a farmer on a grant of land.  the family share $48, enabled us to buy a picnic case which was affectionately know as Uncle Tom!

http://www.saskhomesteads.com/ - hmm, no Thomas Kendrick here.

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/0201_e.html - nor on the land grant records, or the WWI records here, or on the 1925-1935 emigration records.  He seems to be a bit of a ghost!

Hi Bellringer,

The closest I found on the 1911 was a Thos. Kendred born April 1883 in England who is living in Moosejaw, Sask. with his wife Harriet who was born in England in 1885 and his daughter Kathleen who was born in 1909 in Sask.  The year of immigration is 1904 for Thomas and 1905 for Harriet.

This Thomas's occupation is a drayman.

On the distribution of assets, does it give any other names?  Do you have his death certificate?

In the papers for other family members I found an address of c/o mrs pierce sims, waldron, sank (looks like), Canada.  Not dated.  I have assumed he died in Saskatoon because that was the address of solicitors.  They may have multiple offices.  Maybe he was just a farm labourer, but spoils the family story!!!
Thanks for your ideas.

Do you know who the solicitors were?  Perhaps you can contact them, its surprising how long lawyers keep their files for and take old records from lawyers that passed away.

They signed Retailers Trust Company at the foot of the document, but no address.  I found it seems to have been taken over by Norfolk Trust if my reading is correct.

That would be Waldron, Saskatchewan...Hopefully they were not living in
Waldron, because it will never in a million years be transcribed because of the
poor scans ( they say it's the quality of the microfilm, but it's the quality of the
scanners and the PEOPLE WHO ARE PAID to do the job that are poor...( I have had almost black on black microfilm that I have scanned on the SAME TYPE of
scanner and made legible by actually making an EFFORT...)

Sorry to steal your thread for my rant but you'll see what I mean when you
go there...

just type in waldron and there are a dozen or more images to see (not)

There is also http://findaperson.canada411.ca/  as there are several Kindricks
living in Saskatchewan...For the cost of a few stamps you might just find the
right one... Luck of the draw, there...

In those days small towns in Saskatchewan likely never had law firms or
insurance agents and dealt in the cities.... Ours didn't( 1950's)...athough we
did move to a town that had it's own Lawyer...and dentist...which was a far
cry from the horse and buggy ride we once got to go to the dentists about 45
miles away...( Yes, there were cars...but the day we needed to hitch a ride
here was no one GOING to that town but the kind fellow and his cart! )
