Title: My mining ancestors -Normanton area
Post by: Gadget on Tuesday 14 March 06 21:02 GMT (UK)
I've just noticed the Altofts posting and remembered that I have masses of relatives in that area that I haven't been able to chase up after the 1901 census. I wonder if anyone recognises any of the following names.

They are all descended from Edward and Catherine Stokes who lived in Bronygarth, St Martins parish, Shropshire  1813 - 1840s. Edward was a coal miner. After Edward and Catherine's deaths most of their sons moved to Willenhall in Staffordshire. After the failure of the mines there they dispersed, some moving back to the mines of the North Wales/Shropshire borders and others moving to the Normanton area.

These are my Yorkshire relatives:

Your list includes my grandfather Thomas Wall (who was indeed a coal miner living in Normanton). I knew his mother was Phoebe Stokes, and had traced her father as Thomas Stokes and (with some difficulty due to errors in census listings) his place of birth as Bron-y-garth (in the beautiful Ceiriog valley). As his father was dead by 1841 I hadn't managed to find his name, so was delighted to come across your posting. Is there a more efficient way I can communicate with you?

So just acknowledge you understand, then only a further post.
(I will advise on how to use the system following your next reply)

Hi ctcw

As Brian says, just make a reply to this and you might be able to send me a PM (sometimes it's 2 posts and sometimes 3). When you can, you'll see a scroll type icon under my avatar ~ it looks like this  (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/Themes/citiez_20a/images/im_off.gif)  or (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/Themes/citiez_20a/images/im_on.gif)

Click on that and you will be able to send me a personal message (PM).

As it's 9 years since I posted this,  I have a lot more info now.

I recall that I did have contact with porky as we didn't have a posting requirement for PMs in those days  :)

Just to add some more about the first entry on the list as I've found (yet again) a tree on Ancestry  that is wrong :

1901 Castleford Rd, Normanton
Joseph b.1841, a coal miner.  ????  Not found after this
With him are his daughter and son-in-law:
Winifred b.1870  Died Q 1,  1905, Wakefield RD. Age 35
Jeremiah DEAKIN, a coal miner, b.c. 1869 (Shropshire) . Re-married Q2 1906, Wakefield, to Annie Elizabeth Giles. 1911 37 Greenbank Road,  Altofts  with  Irene, 1904; Florence, 1907.
Irene  was Winifred’s daughter.- born Q2 (6 April 1903) , 1903, Wakefield RD. Baptised : 6 May 1903. With parents listed as Jeremiah and Winifred Deakin, 14 Station Street, Sandal.   Irene married Q2, 1926, Wakefield to Harry Myers. Had two sons -1927, 1928 – possibly more?  Irene died Q1, 1964, Claro, aged 64.

Additions entered in Teal.

If anyone could find the death/burial of Joseph. I'd be grateful.

I find difficulties with some of this research more like a quicksand than a brick wall!
I discovered Thomas Stokes with daughter Phebe (sic) on the version of the 1861 census on FreeCen: it does not appear on a search on Findmypast.
Phoebe had 3 husbands (not 2): her father-in-law Benjamin Wall had 3 wives.
His parents were John and Hannah. There were 5 marriages of John WALLs in Staffs in the period to girls called Ann/Hannah: I can only guess which was the right one.
On the other hand I find no marriages of Edward Stokes to a Catherine.

Edward Stokes married Catherine Jones in 181513 (?), St Martins. He was a widower. The marriage is on FindMyPast, but I also have a copy.

Edward was the illegitimate son of an Elizabeth Stokes. he was b. 1776, and bpt Ellesmere.  Catherine died in Willenhall in (I think) 1845 - also have her burial details. She went there with the sons.

This is from memory as I'm on laptop and my gedcoms, etc. are on my main PC.

Who was Phoebe's third husband?

Title: Re: My mining ancestors -Normanton area

Phoebe's second husband was William Henry Delves (1857-1884): they married in 1881 in Wakefield district.
My uncle Terry used to visit his granny Phoebe in California Row when he was young (she didn't die till 1923), and he told me there had been 3 husbands.

Just been looking at my tree. I seem to have a more of Pheobe's descendants to beyond the 1911.

Was your Uncle Terry b. 1905, son of Thomas Wall and Henrietta ?Broxup. ?

Uncle Terry (christened Thomas Terry Wall)  31/10/1904-19/7/1995 was indeed the second child of Thomas Wall and Henrietta Broxup. I am still in touch with his daughter Nancy about the family history research. There were 7 children altogether - the youngest was Ben (1919-2007); I was glad we managed to visit him in Canada a few years before his death; and keep in touch with some of his children too.
I haven't done much research on the Broxup side - one of my cousins, Billy Broxup (a bookmaker, so the wealthy member of the family) had done quite a bit already on censuses.

I'm descended from Edward and Catherine's son John who married Caroline Parish. I've tried to follow up all the descendants as far as possible.  A rootschat member, WelshYorky, is also a descendant.

I'll see what I can dig up for you and send it via the e-mail you sent.

Haven't worked it out yet but we are maybe 3rd/4th  cousins  :)

I was born Lee, my grandfather was a Deakin, I live in Altofts. I have a Jeremiah Deakin, born to
Henry Deakin and Sarah Hudson in around 1869. Henry was my great great grandfather and was
killed in the explosion on 2nd October 1886 at Pope and Pearson Colliery. Would love to know if
we have a family association. I shall be 73 on the 12th - so don't waste any time!!

Hi

Hold on - I'm not that that many years behind you   ;D - it looks as if your Jeremiah was married to Winnifred Stokes and the father of Irene Deakin. He was born Wellington Shropshire. On 1881, his parents are Henry and Sarah, b. Shropshire. living Park Row, Normanton.

Lots of children so will transcribe them and put them up.

Pauline ~

I've just seen your posting on the Altofts thread. You say:

Quote
Henry was one of the deputies killed on 2nd October 1886 at the Pope and Pearson Colliery (Silkstone Seam) in Altofts, West Yorkshire. My grandfather, Alfred, was one of the son's of Henry
and Sarah, and my late mother, Lily, along with Clarence, George and Mary (all deceased) were
Alfred's children with Hannah Maria Brain whom he married on 25th December 1899 in St Mary Magdalene Church, Church Road, Altofts.

So definitely an in-law   :)

Yes, I have all that, and more. Thanks. I have 'Family Historian' on my computer, and my husband
has it on his computer, too. It's brilliant. I shall make sure that the information you have given
concurs with what I have. If, in the future, you wish, or need, to go further back, then help is here
and you just have to ask.

Thanks for your kind offer.  I also have Family Historian. I've had it for about 9 years or so - when it first came out - and have now got up to the latest version. It's very good.

I think I have most of the Stokes line as far back as possible at the moment but I might come back to you with some younger ones in your area!  I'm presently looking for the descendants of Martha Stokes (Edward and Catherine's eldest daughter) who went to the USA in 1843.

My immediate line went back to Denbighshire/Shropshire from  Willenhall. The ones here are descendants of my 3 x great grandparents  :)

I also have a connection with the Pope & Pearson mine explosion: William Clegg, one of the rescue teams formed as a consequence of the inquiry into it, was a brother of my maternal grandfather.

And my paternal grandfather's mother was a Stokes, in a line now traced back to Edward (1776-1839).

By the way, I'm now 78, and don't plan to die just yet!
