Title: parish relief
Post by: little meg on Monday 13 March 06 05:40 GMT (UK)
could someone please tell me where I might find information on Parish relief.
My ancestor, John Overend is listed on the 1851 census as being a former worsted weaver receiving parish relief. He was living in Sutton but children were baptised at Kildwick parish church.
Any details welcome, please.  ;D
regards Margaret.

After 1834 the responsibility for the poor passed from the individual parish to the poor law unions.  These were administered by the Boards of the Guardians of the Poor.  These were responsible for both the workhouses and out relief.

You need to be looking for the minutes of their meetings,  the rate books of the overseers of the poor (these showed who paid the poor rate), the account books of the workhouse, and the relieving officers account books for out relief.

You should find these at your local record office although some transcription has been done by Family History Societies.

There were at this time still some charities administered by the individual parishes which would be covered by the vestry minutes again in your local record office.

Hi David,
thankyou for that information, quite complex isn't it.
I will look into the places you have suggested.
Thanks for clearing it up for me.  :)
Kind regards

Hi Margaret,

Are you local to Sutton? I used to live in the village and have ancestors there also. There are a couple of books in our library done by local historians though I don't think they'll have the records you are looking for. I would think your best bet would be NYCRO.

In case you weren't aware the village has a website with gallery of old photos just go to www.sutton-in-craven.org.uk.

Hope that helps. Good luck,
Jen
