Title: Eastbourne Baptism look up please
Post by: Chilljoan on Sunday 12 March 06 20:37 GMT (UK)
Hi
I'm new, so please excuse me if i've done this wrong! I need to find the parents of John FUNNELL born approx 1811 in Eastbourne, Sussex. He does not appear on the IGI at all. I live too far away to travel to the Records office. Can anyone have a look in the Parish Records for Eastbourne for me??
Many thanks
Chilljoan

Is he the one with his brother William in 1851 in London?    Have you got him in 1861 when he is in Luton?   His mother Elizabeth age 75, born Heathfield, is living with them.   And he has the mother in law too.  Poor bloke!
RG9 1012 F46 p11   I hope this is him.

Assuming that if the above family is the correct one his parents married in the bride's parish I looked at the Sussex Marriage Index.  There is a marriage in Heathfield 24 October 1806 for Isaac Funnell to Elizabeth Leeves, daughter of John Leeves.
There are also some marriages in Eastbourne for the Funnell name so you will need to check that you have the right family quite carefully.
Any Isaacs later in the family?

Hi Andrea
Yes that is him on the 1851 census, then he appears with the whole family (m-i-law, mother) in 1861.

That could be his parents marriage as I know his mother was Elizabeth from the census. I have his marriage cert (he married at 50!) His mother was from Heathfield. Is there any other info of the marriage, ie witnesses, their parents names, etc ? Sorry to ask, I don't know much about Parish records & what info is on them !

I still would like confirmation of his parents from the Eastbourne Records, though just to be sure I have the right one.
Thanks
Chilljoan

That was all the information on the Sussex Marriage Index.   That probably means there is nothing else in the actual register but it will be worth checking.   If you have John's marriage certificate then you know his father's name and occupation.    Was he an Isaac?   If not then it is the wrong marriage.

Just seen your message about John Funnell, he is my gt gt gt grandfather James Funnells brother, John was the only one born in Eastbourne, the rest of his siblings born in Wilmington to Isaac Funnell and Elizabeth nee Leeves.  John married his niece Emma Funnell, the daughter of James Funnell and Emma Eleanor nee Strickett.  On that census mentioned are Elizabeth Funnell nee Leeves and Emma Funnell nee Strickett as the mother in laws, but Elizabeth was also Emma Funnell nee Stricketts mother in law also.  She is the mother in law to Emma jnr, and also her grandmother (gets a little confusing)  John was Emma Eleanors sister in law and son in law!  John and Emma jnr  lived in Luton where a couple of Johns other brothers also moved to.  Almost any Funnells in Luton will come from this family as mostly the Funnells were from Sussex.  If you would like any further info please get in touch.

Hi
Info I have down so far is Issac Funnell (parents Edward Funnell and Martha Turner?) Bap 25 Jan 1785 Heathfield Sussex. Married Elizabeth Leeves (daughter of John Leeves and Sarah Parks) . Children of Elizabeth and Issac - James abt 1808 Heathfield, John 1811 Eastbourne, William 1814 Wilmington, Charles 1821 Wilimington. (Were there any more?)

Elizabeth Leeves is my connection grt5 x Aunt. Seems very confusing with the mothers in law situ and John & Emma went on to have children????
