Title: Frances Lawson Hinds and her father Capt Hinds
Post by: decco on Sunday 12 March 06 13:45 GMT (UK)
Hi

This is my first time using this site am very excited.

Can anyone help me with any details on Frances Lawson Hinds  B1856 Maryport. She married in March 1877 at cockermouth Joseph Mitchinson. My cousin went searching  for Joseph's grave in Christchurch allonby and found it had closed and half of the cemetry gone. Has anyone got access to any records of burials?

Also in 1851 and 62 census I am unable to find Frances' father (Mr Hinds) who wa married to a Frances B1818 Liverpool (a dressmaker).  He was always on ship and the census said that he was a captain or master seaman. Again, can anyone help with finding out which ship he couldv'e been on and his first name. I have also been told he was black which is funny as my family are white, but a cousin has just discovered she has black blood cells.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to read this.

Kerrie

Welcome to rootschat.
If you buy the marriage certificate for 1877 that will give 'Mr Hinds' name and profession.
I have Cumberland Lawsons marrying Hinds in my family, so will have a look for yours.

The 1851 census suggests that Ann (? b Sep 1841 Cockermouth) might be Frances Hind's eldest child. The only Hind marriages I could find in the area where Frances was one of the possible wives were:

Henry HIND m Frances HERVEY  Jun 1840  Liverpool, or even less likely

James HIND m Frances ASHTON Dec 1840 Stockport,

although there is no guarantee that Frances was the wife in eithert of the two marriages (there were three other possibilities in each case).

As Elizabeth Hind (b 1785, Setmurthy) is named as Mr Hind's mother in 1851 I looked for James/Henry baptisms with Elizabeth as mother on IGI but couldn't find any.

Hi
I have found details of my ancestors who were seamen at the Record Office in Kew.  There is a thing called Lloyds Captains Register (I think?)which has details of ships and seamen as far as I can remember.  It is many years since I looked at it.  I think I have heard that it is online now but if not their catalogue certainly is.    Try googling A2A and find the archives online site.  That may help.

Hi

Thanks for the info.  Do you mind me asking how long have you been researching your tree and how far have you managed to get back?

I have been doing it for over 20 years and am still stuck with my maiden name at the point I got to within a year which is only 1804 positively.   I have not given up yet though.   I have got my husband's family back to the 1600s but that is because they owned land so were easier to trace than my ag labs.
Having all these records on the internet makes it much easier to get back to the mid 1800s without leaving the house.   Sad in a way as going to record offices is so interesting and the thrill of finding something afer weeks, or even years,  of searching is so much more rewarding.  I have never forgotten the day I eventually found burial records for one couple in 1825.  I went home in great excitement and said "I've found them. They're dead"   My daughter just looked at me as if I was mad and said "But you've always known they were dead"!

What is IGI?

It's the International Genealogical Index produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints (Mormons):http://www.familysearch.org
Their beliefs require them to baptise their ancestors, so they need to find out who they are.
As a result they have transcribed a large number (but not all) of the parish registers (mostly before 1837) and there is free access. The index also includes a number of names submitted by individuals which are more likely to be wrong, but as a preliminary tool it is very useful.
There are clever ways to search it, but have a look for yourself on the above link.

PS Are you going to buy the 1877 marriage certificate? You can do it online.
