I have an East Sussex Census - 1851 Index covering Burwash, Ticehurst & Etchingham. It shows my gg grandfather Edward Baldock (spelt Boldock) and his family. Edward Baldock was born 1806. I then received, from the East Sussex Archives, the batism record from end May, beginning June 1806, showing him being registered as the son of Joseph & Mary Baldock.
My request is, is there a possibility to find the family of Joseph Baldock, and the maiden name of his wife Mary. As this all goes back to the 18th centuary, it may be difficult to trace.

Unfortunately I am at work at the moment, so can not give you a proper answer.
Someone like Little Nell has the marriage index for sussex pre 1837, so should be able to give you the brides maiden name.
I have the 1841 census and some earlier census 1821 / 1831 - so mifgt be able to give you informaton from them as well
Will post again early evening

Hello Heidi,
As Chris says, I have the Sussex Marriage Index and I have looked up Jospeh Baldock. Three marriages appear:
Ticehurst, East Sussex 10 Apr 1787:
Joseph BALDOCK & Sarah BRITT, botp (B)
Extra Information: Witness wit: BRITT John; BROCKHURST James
Wadhurst, East Sussex 13 Apr 1806:
Joseph BALDOCK & Hannah CHANDLER, botp (B)
Ticehurst, East Sussex 22 Feb 1808:
Joseph BALDOCK & Vashti DOUST, botp (B)
Extra Information: Witness wit: Jn D; BALDWIN Eliz
So that's a bit of a problem. There are a number of J* Baldock marriages around that time but none with Mary as the bride.
The closest I can get are the following:
Wadhurst, East Sussex, 20 Jan 1793:
Daniel BALDOCK, wdr & Mary SMITH, botp (B)
Wadhurst, East Sussex 19 Aug 1810:
Thomas BALDOCK & Mary MOREN, botp (B)
Battle, East Sussex, 2 Jul 1800:
Benjamin BALDOCK, bach & Mary BARHAM, sp botp (B)
There may be others but I set my criteria for 1800 =/- 10 years.
But the IGI lists a Joseph Baldock m Mary Francis 11 Dec 1798 at St Nicholas Rochester, Kent. Does that help?

Thanks very much for the information.
First of all, I made a mistake. The document I have is so old and in handwriting which is a bit illegible. It was Joseph and Sarah who were the parents and not Maria (probably thinking too much in a biblical direction). The Baldock family was very much based in Ticehurst and they all found their wives in and around Ticehurst (Burwash, Etchingham etc.).
Joseph and Sarah Britt seem to be the best match. they married in 1787 and seemed to have waited some time for my gg grandfather Edward, but I take it that there were perhaps many other children before Edward arrived. Is there any way of finding out whether there were other children. I have discovered in my Baldock family tree that the same names always occur in the various branches (they had 10-15 children per marriage)

Hi there Heidi
Had a look in earlier census returns for Joseph & Sarah Baldock - but up to 1841 they are mostly statistics
1801 Ticehurst - Gibbsreed
Joseph Baldock & Philip Butler - 2 families, 7 males, 6 females
Edward Baldock - 1 family, 4 Males, 32 Females
1811 Ticehurst
Joseph Baldock - 1 family, 3 males, 1 female
1841 Census - 12 Families altogether
BALDOCK Joseph, 54, Ag Lab
Vashdi, 50
Mary, 22
Hannah, 13
All born in County except Vashdi
BALDOCK Joseph, 75, Ag Lab
Sarah, 70
Jesse, 30, Ag Lab
All born in Sussex
Joseph & Sarah do not appear in the 1851 census, but Joseph & Vashdi are there.
It looks like this is a parish register look up, from their marriage and then follow the baptisms through the register

Hi Chris & Little Nell
You wonderful people - I think I have achieved in one day what I have been trying for the past year.
The main clue, I think, is the mention from the 1841 census of Joseph baldock and Sarah living with Jesse. All my family in this part of the world were agricultural labourers. My gg grandfather Edward (son of Joseph and Sarah) had a son called Jesse born 1848. A Jesse Baldock was living with Joseph and Sarah and might have been one of their sons, which means he might be my gg granfather Edward's uncle. The families at that time did tend to use the same names in their families. If this is so, it means that Joseph was 45 when Jesse was born. Joseph Baldock would have been aged 40 when Edward was born which is quite possible for that day and age.
It doesn't surprise me that Joseph and Sarah no longer appear in the 1851 census - they must have had a long life for that time to appear in the 1841 census.
1811 census - 1 family, 3 males, 1 family - I don't quite understand this entry. Does it mean that there were 3 males called Joseph Baldock, as well as 2 families with Joseph Baldock as their head?
Also am not quite sure what to make of the 1801 Ticehurst entry of Joseph Baldock and Philip Butler
I think the chances are quite good that the Joseph and Sarah Baldock-Britt could be my ggg grandparents.
Thanks again for all your help

Heidi
Sorry to confuse you
1801 - 1831 census is just statistics
1801 Ticehurst - Gibbsreed (name of house or street)
Joseph Baldock & Philip Butler - 2 families, 7 males, 6 females
2 families sharing the same house which contained 7 males and 6 females - two of those males were the heads of their respective families i.e. Joseph & Philip
Edward Baldock - 1 family, 4 Males, 2 Females
1 family of 4 males and 2 females of which Edward is the Head
1811 Ticehurst
Joseph Baldock - 1 family, 3 males, 1 female
I family of 3 males, 2 females of which Joseph is the head
Hope that has made it a bit clearer
