Hi,
I'm doing some research for my neighbour and I'm stuck!!
His great grandparents were Mary Alice Obey and Edgar Alexander Black. I believe they married in Selhurst, Surrey on September 9th 1898. I have found them on the 1901 census...
24 Rothesay Road, Parish of Croydon
Edgar A Black, 24, Head, straw-hat wearhouseman, born Brixton
Mary A Black, wife, 26, born Brixton
Leslie A G Black, son 1, born Norwood
Ruby A F Black, dau, 4 mths, born Norwood.
I have been unable to find anything more about Mary Alice Black nee Obey.
Any help in finding her parents and/or her on an earlier census would be greatly appreciated
TIA

Marriage J/A/S quarter 1898
Mary Alice Obey Croydon 2a 572
You could get cert to find her father's name plus her address at time of marriage
-
Birth J/F/M quarter
1875
Mary Alice Obey Lambeth 1d 532
-
Marriage o/N/D quarter 1872
George Charles Obey London C 1c 67
Looking at the census in 1881 when she is 8, it looks like her Dad is George C, so this looks like his marriage
Getting the cert would give you more details incl of course wife's name (hopefully Mary!)
-
Birth J/F/M quarter 1848
George Charles Obey - Hackney 111 202
Get this cert and you will find his parents!!
-
Sorry, Allegs I am spending your money like water on all these certs!!!!

It's what Saturday afternoons are for!!! ;D
Can't find anything concrete for George Obey before 1871....there is a George Obey born at the right time, but he is listed as born in East Peckham Kent (Living in West Malling, Kent) in 1861 & Teston Kent (Living in Teston Kent) in 1851.
However, the Walkers were easier to follow!!

So it loks like Mary (senior's) maiden name was Walker
Just to help confirm that:
Marriage O/N/D 1872
Mary Walker London C 1c 67
Goes nicely with the George C marriage I found earlier!
-
Fabulous!, I'm so excited and this lot don't even belong to me!! ;D
The Walker's seem to have been from all over the place and Elizabeth Walkers mother must be Mary Sams from Yeovil..... I wonder how they all met....!
-
Death

Me neither.... ::) State/Stake/Stoke N....ah...Stoke Newington...is that anywhere near Hackney?
Regards, Emma ;)
P.S. Think I'm going to be finding snippets on this family all afternoon...keep your shoes on!
-
Yes, Stoke Newington is near Hackney
-
Excellent!!
You're both fantastic!
Any idea how I can find out who Mr Sams the butcher, wife of Mary from Yeovil was??!!!
Also i can't find the Walkers in the 1871, Emma..... am I typing in the wrong piece, folio page etc?
-
I tell you, my geographical knowledge of London/Middlesex/Surrey is shocking...my ancestors would be so proud! :-[

Just looking at the post about Mary Sams visiting the Boxall family in Brighton in 1851.... Well I was thinking maybe they are of some relation as her daugther Elizabeth was born in Brighton....? hmmmmmm...... Just think out loud!
-
Think I've found William Walker and Elizabeth Sams marriage at St Nicholas, Brighton on Dec 24th 1848. Elizabeth's father was James Sams.
-
Longevity is rife in this family...wonder what their secret was?!

Sams....Samson I'm confused...did they lose the 'on' somewhere?!
Oh no I've un-confused my self...that Elizabeth is the daughter of Wm Walker not the Wife who was nee Sams....
Flipping nora!!
-
Blimey...it will become clear in the end...I hope.
James Sams (Butcher!), Father of Elizabeth Sams married to William Walker....well, he had passed away before 1851....
Regards, Emma ;)
-
Sorry to backtrack a few generations (this is all moving a bit too fast!!) -
I looked for a death for Mary Obey from 1881 to 1891, because, if you remember (so much has happened since then!) the children were with George Charles and Mary in 1881, but by 1891 are with granny and grandad. We found Dad George Charles's death and I wondered if Mum had died too.
I found nothing - so looks like she is still around in 1891 somewhere (may have remarried), and the children are just staying with grandparents.
I must go now as hubby just phoned to say he is on the way home from footy!!!!!!
Next time I go on line you will probably be back to about 1066 at this rate!!!!
-
Thank you for all your help Liz, it is greatly appreciated. I'd not even realised that the parents were missing!!
1066 - I wish!!! hahaha!
Thank you for putting me straight Emma!
-
Mary Obey (Mother, Senior....where was the imagination?!) was alive and kicking in 1901...just need to pinpoint her in 1891
1901
171 Selhurst Road, Croydon
Mary Obey, Head, W, 51, Living on own means, Mddx Marylebone
Stanley Obey, Son, 22, Surrey Brixton
Maud Obey, Daughter, 20, Surrey Brixton
Ethel Obey, Sister, 50, Mddx Tottenham
RG13/649 Pg 14
Just one question...who is Ethel?! ::)
Regards, Emma ;)
-
No idea Emma....!! Who's Stanley too, I don't remember seeing his name before...? Maybe I just missed him!
Maybe Ethel was George's sister and Mary's sister in law perhaps? Unless Ethel was Mary's sister and married an Obey too? Does it say if she is married , widowed etc?
-
She's down as being single...which points to her being George's sister...if she's been mistranscribed, I can safely say I've not seen her before....!
Regards, Emma ;)
-
Ernest E Obey (on 1881 with William Walker) turns out to be Ernest Stanley Obey...I think..
1891
Freeman Orphan School, Brixton, Lambeth
Ernest Stanley Obey, Pupil, 12, Camberwell

I assuming he was there as his Father had died??

Fab Emma,
You're a star! Maybe we can find Geroge in an earlier census now we've got a possibility for his sister......

Awesome!!

Eliza Jane Long is a possible for marriage to John Thomas Obey...they shared a page anyway!
Have a feeling that Jane/Eliza Obey would've remarried between 1855 & 1861...perhaps a young George Charles Obey would've taken her new name too? Either that, or been mis-written/transcribed in the 1861 census?
Regards, Emma ;)
-
I've had a look for Ethel Obey too, she'd have been born approx 1851, obv after the census. I can't find her on the 1861 either.
I thin they must have taken their step fathers surname - if only we knew what that was.....

Thank you Emma,
They must have been quite well off if the kids were all at boarding school!
Do we know where Florence is on the 1901? I wonder if there were 2 Victor's?
If not I wonder what happened there.....a bit of scandal maybe?!!
-
Couldn't find Florence for love nor money in 1901 ::) ....guess it'll take a fine tooth comb....

Hi,
That Boxall family are in my wife's tree.
Mary Sams was with her Daughter Mary Ann Boxall (Nee Sams)
Mary Ann Sams Married John Boxall on 4th Dec 1836 in Brighton
The mother Mary must have also been a Butcher as in Occupation it reads "Independant (retired butcher)"
Which is John's job.
cheers russ
