This line I am searching has just been one of those that is go slow stop progress. Its costing me in certificates and I haven't even got to 1891 yet :'(
If I tell it as I have it could someone please give a second opinion pointing out any possible errors of judgement - its driving me nuts
we start with Sidney Norton born 21 Oct 1921 6 Hargrave St Little Coates Great Grimsby - I have the birth cert and parents are James Norton Dock Labourer and Martha Norton nee Smith. Sidney died in 1995 in Louth
I sent for the marriage cert of James and Martha Smith and the details on that are:
19 August 1910 The Register Office Grimsby
James Norton age 33 Bachelor Farm Labourer - residence 9 Hare Terrace Great Grimsby father George Norton Farm Shepherd
Martha Smith age 28 spinster housekeeper residence Fotherby father James Smith farm Labourer
Witnesses - James Smith and D Smith ----- married by Liscence
I have searched best I can the 1881 to 1901 census and I THINK the family of James is this one from 1891

trouble with this is this family is on 1881 with surname Copeland - I mean how can this be???? :'(
1871 george is a Norton and unmarried
Please could someone give me their honest opinion - I don't mind buying certs but need to be sure cause its costing a fortune
I haven't even looked for Martha - with a name like smith it's not going to be easy.
Please help :-[

----- married by Liscence
It might be worth finding a copy of the marriage licence as they often give more details than certificates.
-
oh gosh now you will think me thick ---- HOW? :-\
-
On the marriage cert. James's fathers occupation is a farm shepherd
Was there an occupation for George NORTON on the 1891 census?
Myfi
-
yes sorry agricultural Labourer on other census it says farm Labourer

never one to refuse a challenge - looking at the smith side - you have her DOB and fathers name so that narrows it down a bit - assuming that the family is a lincolnshire family
In the 1891 searching for Martha finds a couple of likely hits but only one with father James that is as follows:-

so I then look in the 1901 and it's slightly more complicated because Martha is of age to be working away from home - there are these possibilities:-

That's too good a match to not be the same so your ancestor Lucy was his second wife by the looks of it
AND - your so lucky - I can't believe this in the 1871 I can find James and Charlotte living with the in laws vis.......

What wonderful luck so you know Charlotte was a Kirk ( I have Kirks in my tree by marriage but from South lincolnshire)

In the 1861 James is now 14 ( DOB here is shown as 1847 rather than 1848) and is at home with parents John and Dinah, plus siblings Ann, Emma, George, and Isaac. still in Covenham St Bartholomew.
In '51 we can add Martha, Thomas and William to his siblings.
Hope that helps - I love it now the census' are on line when you get a trail like this one you can add generations in minutes - I wish mine was an easy - I now have two lines that lead to Ireland and am well and truly stuck but plenty more lines to follow up
Regards

aren't you just a treasure
I have actually been doing research quite a while and usually I get there thru lengthy searches but this one tied me in knots - I reckon maybe I was not as alert as I usually am -- it all looks pretty good to me and I appreciate it

Image just says Louth ... I would assume it's the Lincolnshire town about 5 miles from Covenham rather than an overseas place. ;)
-
Geoff Louth yes sorry - I meant to correct that - I can see no mention of Ireland on the image but the index has it as far as I can see it's in Lincolnshire. Seemed to be quite a lot a errors in the transcription in this search a warning to not just trust the index I guess.
Teresa - glad I could help I enjoy ones like this when they go well - I did a similar one for my brother in law took the whole village for 60 years and plotted the trees. I find once you get past 1901 you can usually follow the same lines as here taking each census in turn to get the next two generations - sometimes if your lucky three.
I notice that they as a family are well routed in Covenham. It's a small place so you might try typing the place into the Ancestry search field and looking at all the inhabitants - you might find other relatives or potential relatives that way. Actually I think the Norton's may be harder than the Smith side but I'll have a look at them for you when I get some time. I presume you have access to ancestry.com to get the balance of the data I left out.
good luck and good hunting
