Just been given another part of my family tree by a relative, and want to try and learn more about the branch from Tenby.
David Stanley Morgan born 30th December 1888, Tenby.
Occupation: Master Butcher
His father was Levi Morgan, and date of birth is just given as before 1870.
David married Gladys Mary Thomas, born 4th August 1887 in Tenby. Her father was William Thomas, and her mother was Eliza Wogan.
That's everything I know about my Welsh side, and I would be extremely interested to find anything else out. Anything would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Rebecca

Thanks so much, that's great. Is that Phoebe for the wife?
-
Image of census says Phebe, alternative spelling of Phoebe i presume
Here is Levi with parents and siblings
1861
Brambly Hill, Begelly
Jonah Morgan - head - 42 - Ag Lab - Begelly
Sarah Morgan - wife - 42 - Begelly
John Morgan - son - 17 - Coal Miner - Begelly
Elizabeth Morgan - dau - 11 - Begelly
Hanah Morgan - dau - 6 - Begelly
Levi Morgan - son - 4 - Begelly
Margaret Ann Morgan - dau - 2 - Begelly
Martha Morgan - dau - 10mths - Begelly
-
1851
Colsick, Narberth, Pembs
note that some places of birth different, Narberth is near Begelly but Jonah's birth place is totally different
Jonah Morgan - head - 33 - Ag Lab - Llandowror, Carmarthenshire (currently spelt Llanddowror)
Sarah Morgan - wife - 33 - Narberth
William N Davies - Stepson - 11 - Narberth
John Morgan - Son - 7 - Narberth
Elizabeth Morgan - dau - 1 - Narberth
-
Don't know about that! That's great, thank you so much. Is there any way I could get back further that Jonah without going to record offices? From the stepson is it likely that Davies is the maiden name?
Thanks again,
Rebecca

marriage of Jonah Morgan to Sarah Davies
Jun qtr 1843 in Narberth vol:26 pg:951
-
Can I order that certificate from somwhere?
Thanks again,
Rebecca
-
Yes it can be ordered from the gro using the ref i have given you and it would tell you on the marriage cert the fathers name.
www.gro.gov.uk
-
Thanks so much, I've ordered immediately! That's brilliant!
-
There is this on IGI
JONAH MORGAN
born 14 DEC 1819 Bethesda Particular Baptist, Narberth, Pembroke, Wales
parents: John Morgan and Phoebe
but then on 1851 census birth place doesn't match - i'm sure you'll confirm this from the cert anyway
Have looked on 1841 Llandowror and can't find Jonah there
-
That's a pain about the birth places. Is that likely to be a transcription error, or something else?
Rebecca
-
Good luck!
-
Another relative already had the certificate. No father is given for Jonah, and Sarah's father is given as William Davies.
I can't read any other info - can I post it as an attachment, or is it copyright?
Thanks,
Rebecca
-
That looks good, I wonder why he gave different birth places... They're not even near each other! His oldest son was called John, so that would fit quite well.
How could I verify any of this?
Thanks again,
Becca

Have posted this from my email to you to link in my next posting - hang in there
I think from Jonah and Sarah's marriage cert says that Jonah is a servant in a husbandry and that he was living in East Lake, Amroth Parish - slightly to the east of Begelly
struggling with Sarah's details
They married in Templeton Chapel (independent) - which is between Narberth and Begelly
witnesses John Davies and William Lewis
Have checked Amroth 1841 census and Jonah is not there
Yippee!! Think this is what Sarah's details are:
Scouring the map i have found Llanteg (Lanteg on cert) and seems to be stituated right next to the Crunwere farm which has a church right on its land - (could this be Crunwere parish on cert)
I'll keep digging

1871
Back, Begelly
Jonah Morgan - head - 52 - Labourer - Carmarthenshire
Sarah Morgan - wife - 52 - Nurse - Parish of Narberth
Elizabeth Morgan - dau - 21 - General Servant - Parish of Narberth
Hannah Morgan - dau - 16 - General Servant - Parish of Narberth (cripple from feaver?)
Levi Morgan - son - 14 - Cole miner - Parish Begelly
Margaret Anne Morgan - dau - 12 - Parish Begelly
Martha Morgan - dau - 10 - Parish Begelly
William Morgan - son - 7 - Parish Begelly
and..............
William Davies - father in law (widow) - 79 - Labourer on relief - Parish of Narberth
-
So Jonah has now given his birth as:
1851: Llandowror, Carmarthenshire (currently spelt Llanddowror)
1861: Begelly
1871: Carmarthenshire
1881: Llandewey, Pembs
Sarah:
1851: Narbeth
1861: Begelly
1871: Narbeth
1881: South Narbeth
From that, is it more likely that Jonah was born in Carmarthenshire?
-
Could this be Sarah? (Have no idea where that parish could include!)

EDIT: That area could include Begelly...
-
Hmmm
-
Not very certain thouh, could be anyone
-
There is a marriage on IGI on 5/4/1814 for those two parents in Narberth.
Am struggling to match William on 1861 and 1851
-
I am completely stuck on Jonah's birth ???
Don't have access to 51 and 61 census, sorry!
-
This will probably just confuse even more
1881
Caters hook gate, St Issells, Pembs
Jonah Morgans - head - 67 - Farm Labourer - Llandewey, Pembs
Sarah Morgans - wife - 64 - mid wife - Narberth South, Pembs
Hannah Morgans - dau - Narberth South, Pembs (cripple)
Ebby Morgans - grd dau - 6 - St Issells, Pembs
Mary Morgans - grd dau - 2 - St Issells, Pembs
-
:-[! This is possibly the hardest branch I have traced! What is wrong with this man???
Is there any reason why he should change his place of birth so regularly? :-\
Thanks
Rebecca
-
Just noticed something, which is completely irrelevant
Levi's residence at marriage (1882) was Caters Hook Gate.
Hadn't worked that out!
-
Could have been he just didn't know, picked places he had been, don't forget his marriage cert has no father's name so possibly he didn't know much about his past.
Have looked through 1841 Begelly and can't find any of them
-
Excelelnt so at least the address fits with 1881
-
Is this pretty much a dead end for Jonah's birth?
-
Have looked through Crunwear (parish from marriage cert) but Sarah not there or father William in 1841
-
If we happen to just come across him in 1841 census in you never know!!!
-
Maybe just maybe
1841
Old Mills, Narberth South
William Davies - 45 - Ag lab
Anne Davies - 55? or 35?
Sarah Davies - 20
John Davies - 19 - Ag Lab
Hannah - 15
William - 1?
All born in county
-
Off to bed after all that, be in touch tomorrow
nite nite
-
Thanks for everything!
That would fit in with the IGI Marriage
Thanks again,
Rebecca

Just to fill in some census gaps
1901
Cottage, Begelly, Pembrokeshire
Levi Morgan - head - 43 - Butcher - Begelly
Phebe Morgan - wife - 52 - Trehowell, Pembs
Sarah Morgan - dau - 21 - Begelly
Martha Morgan - dau - 19 - Begelly
Thomas A Morgan - son - 13 - Begelly
David S Morgan - son - 12 - Begelly
George Sharman - serv - 16 - London
-
1881
Broom, Begelly
Levi Morgans - head - 24 - Butcher - Begelly Parish
Phebe Morgans - wife - 30 - Llanfyrnach, Carms
Ann Morgans - dau - 5 - Llanfyrnach, Carms
Sarah Morgans - dau - 1 - Llanfyrnach, Carms
Looks like Phebe wasn't sure where she was from either
-
This is crazy!
I managed to find Phoebe's father, Thomas Morris on the 1881 Census. He was the only blacksmith who was the right age (job from marriage cert). Sadly, he was widowed and lodging.

-
Oops. Didn't know about that.
He was Thomas Morris, Blacksmith, born 1807 in Pembroke.
-
Phebe's birth is on Free BMD, March 1850 Narbeth
-
Where was Thomas Morris living in 1881?
-
At 3 Mount St, Gelligaer, Glamorgan.
-
I'm struggling to find them in earlier census returns
-
Looking through 1851 census images for Llanfyrnach there is only one Phebe anywhere hear the right age living there but too old
Phoebe Morris - born circa 1842 in Clydau, Pembs (no father at home)
-
Becca!
Levi Morgan born 8 October 1856 at Bramble Hill, Begelly.
btw, Phoebe Morris was born 15 Dec 1849 at Gilmaenllwyd (Llanboidy, Narberth). Her Pa was then an Ag Lab, as he still was in 1861, albeit he's a Blacksmith on her marr cert to Levi.
Cheers!
