Title: Durham ancestor; middle name "Ledger"
Post by: Rose224 on Tuesday 07 March 06 17:02 GMT (UK)
I wondered if anyone had thoughts they would like to share on the possible meaning of an unusual second middle name of "Ledger".  My gg grandfather, b Scotland, married an English (b. Durham) girl.  They named their first born son, John Joseph Ledger Fadzen.    In 1871, the mother lived on "Ledger Terrace" and this is the same year she married my gg gf.  However, they did not conceive John J.L. for another 7 years.  Is anyone familiar with Ledger Terrace?  Is a Street or Place name for a middle name a common practice in the 1870's in England?  Is there possibly another meaning to the name "Ledger" that I am not aware of?  This is not a name that was repeated in my family.

Hi

If I had come across this name my initial thoughts would have been that it was his mother's maiden name as that was very common practice.

Maybe they were romantic and named him for the place they met (it seems to work for celebrities)

Maybe Ledger Terrace is named after a person who was somehow important to them.

Have you looked to see if there was anyone in the area with that name - it may have been a close family friend, or the family doctor, and the streetname may be pure coincidence!

Hope this rattles the old grey cells a bit   ;)

Hi Susan.  I have not been able to come up with any person named "Ledger" or any other connection to my ancestry with that name.

My hope in making this post was to see if anyone was familiar with Ledger Terrace and perhaps knows why it was called that or if it had any other significance besides the home of my gg grandmother.  I do not think there is still a street or location known by that name - at least I could not find it on a Google search.

I have a cousin and cohort in family history who has many Ledger's in the family tree.  Many were from the Tanfield area, then Newburn.  Many if Ledger wasn't the surname had Ledger as a middle name.

Janis:  Do you know why they carry this name?  It does not seem like a common random name - at least not in anyone's family other than yours or mine.

Hi Rose

If your Hannah Mary Harrison is who I think she is then I can answer why your ancestor has the names "Joseph Ledger" for middle names. Hannah Mary was the youngest daughter of My 4 x Great Grandfather John A Harrison and wife Sarah. Hannah's oldest sister Elizabeth married Joseph Ledger and quite a few of the nephew's have the name Ledger as a middle name. It did help that Joseph and Elizabeth were quite wealthy, Joseph being an Iron Merchant.

Brian

My Grandmother was born Alice Ledger Barsdell and her mother was Ida Gertrude Ledger Oakes, both born in the North East of England, but despite tracing back several generations I cannot find any others. Was it a local tradition?

The only Ledger Terrace in County Durham seems to be Ledger Terrace, Blackhill, Consett, County Durham. I was born in the Richard Murray Hospital in Blackhill but confess I had not heard of Ledger Terrrace before. JJL Fadzen seems to have been born in the Lanchester, County Durham area which should include Blackhill. The name Ledger is fairly common in the Lanchester area.

Hi I got confused with a middle name for one of my lot also in the Durham area and could not find a link to the family. I imagined all sorts and as it was also  the name of the local pub, I wondered if the father was the local publican after who the pub was named!!  It was only after I went back 2 further generations on the mothers sides mothers side that I found it was the maiden name of that mother. Expensive to get all the ceritificates but it was a problem that niggled at me so I was pleased to solve it.
