Help please; I am looking for Ellen (or Eleanor) Gulliver, who said that she was born in 1837 in Gilesgate Moor and daughter of James Gulliver. She had left home and was a servant girl in 1851.

Might this be the family (minus father)

Jennifer,
Many thanks, I think that you are spot on; she quotes Gilligate in another census. What a quaint spelling of Gulliver? Still, with a strong regional accent and unable to read or write, who can check it?
Sorry for a second request but what is the parish church?
Thanks again,
Terry

St. Giles.

Many thanks, I will get the LDS films when I return to UK.

Terry,
Might it not be GULLIVER that was the quaint spelling, that gained sway and took over through time ?

I have wondered about this myself - the name gallagher is so close - but who knows?
During the 1830's/50s my own Gullivers have been variously listed as Gollopher/Goliver/Golifer/Golipher & Gallifor, with some of the same folks having different spellings for Baptisms, marriage & census. I suppose that's what happens if you rely on other people to write things down. ::)

Jackie,
Sorry I haven't replied earlier but we have been away. I had picked up Ellen in 1861 and have some more detail on the Gulliver clan with all its variant spelling. Suggest we swap details - please contact.

Hi All, Have i missed the bus?
This thread seems to have gone underground, and i have just found it.
In short, i have Durham Gullivers, which seem to have contacts with this site.

Hi, My Gt grandmother was Mary Gulliver (b1883), daughter of George Gulliver & Elizabeth Trippett. Have info on the family in Spennymoor/Tudhoe area, Durham City, Easington & South Shields. But only have my particular line back to 1805. Suspect an Irish connection before that but cannot prove.
Happy to swap info, get in touch, but might be away from the computer quite a bit over Christmas, so I cannot promise an immediate response....

Hi Jackie,
Thanks for the contact. Where to begin! I have feeling that my Gt grandad James Gulliver(Sunderland on the various Census`was maybe from Sunderland Bridge. I did find a James in Sunderland, that i doubted, but after reading this thread its possible that he may be with his sister Mary and her husband(only a guess), and that might be him on Jen B`s Gollefairs. On the 1881 census James is with his family in Easington Lane, all ch. except the last are born there. the youngest is born Spennymoor !!! , but two more now left home were born Sherburn. The eldest, James is in Sunderland bridge in 1901.
Have you any connection with these?
Regards Fred

Adam,
Sorry I have taken so long to respond but I have been out of circulation and have changed my ISP and e-mail address as well, thus I wasn't alerted to your message.
I think that you have found the right events, particularly because I had tentatively had James Gulliver married to Elizabeth Gilberson. IGI has Elizabeth Gilbertson b. 29 Mar 1801 and bapt. 30 Mar 1801 at Trimdon, which is the right sort of area. She was the daughter of Richard Gilbertson and Magdalen Smith. Madglen Smith Gilberson remarried Peter Barrow on 12 Sep 1824 at Manchester Cathedral. You quote the sponsors of James Gulliver as Peter and Magdalen Patten. It looks much like a misprint, doesn't it? Is there any chance of a double-check please, pretty please?
Best wishes,
Terry

The Trimdon baptisms says Elizabeth Gilbertson born 29 Mar 1801, baptised 30 Mar 1801 3rd daughter of Richard Gilbertson, farmer, native of Hutton Many Geese?, Yorkshire by his wife Magdalene Smith native of this parish
Says the same thing with daughter born in 1799 and on son Richard John Pattison Gilbertson it says that Hutton Many Geese is near Easingwood Yorkshire [also known as Easingwold]

Janis,
Many thanks, I am moving forward slowly, as you can see from this message string. From your response, I assume that you may have the Trimdon BMD. Do you have them all, including RC?
Terry
-
Janis,
I have just looked up IGI. There was a Richard Gilberson bapt. 30 Jun 1765 at Sessay near Easingwold, which includes Hutton Sessay. Could this be 'Hutton Mary Geese'?
Terry
-
I have a M H Wood transcript. I looked them all up because the town name seemed a bit silly, but that is what it looked like in all the children's baptisms. I have family born in Cold Knuckles--seemed a silly name also. the Hutton name was quite clear, the Many part not as clear, but Geese was clear enough. So it will probably depend on the parish record.
Sorry no RC records.
Janis
-
Janis,
Many thanks; I will nit-pick my way forward! I have picked more children of George Smith and Magdaline Pattison in Trimdon in IGI.

I have the Marriage Bond from DRO : Durham Diocese 31st December1796, Richard Gilbertson (Farmer), aged 21, of Trimdon obtained a licence to marry Magdalen Smith, aged 21, of Trimdon Surety: Thomas Potts, of Pittington Hallgarth [Note married 1st January 1797 Trimdon].
I think that the Magdalen Smith Gilbertson that married Peter Barrow in Manchester was their daughter - Bapt 2nd Nov 1797 Trimdon.
They also had a son Richard John Pattison Gilbertson born 21 Oct 1803 & bapt same day at Trimdon. I have him as a Shoemaker, aged 35, on the 1841 census of Durham City (living with ? his wife & children) & on the 1851 at 3 Claypath, St Nicholas, Durham City, aged 47, as a Gardner & Seedsman (sic) who was born St Oswalds, Durham. I cannot find him after 1851.
They also seem to have a daughter Mary Gilbertson born 6 January 1799 & Bapt 12th January 1799 at Trimdon.
I,m happy to go with Sessay as the birthplace but the Hutton Many geese needs more work (Hutton Magna?)

Jackie,
Good to see that you are still working away at the Gullivers; I was going to send you an update when I had got the Gilbersons pinned down but you seem to be ahead of me.
I have got back as far as Matthew/Mattias born about 1740 but am still filling detail; what have you got? I have also been to Tudhoe cemetery and picked up some of the MIs. Suggest that we swap files by e-mail. I am still at terry_fox@y7mail.com
Best wishes,
Terry
