I seek George and Ellen TIDBURY, possibly with 85th Rgt.
2 sons George Henry b 1849 and Charles b 1853. both born "Preston" I think. I originally assumed Preston, Lancs, but I see there is also a Preston? in SHR and Shrewsbury is the home of the KSLI.
Any other suggestions and info gratefully recd.

Oh No!! not another Charles!. My Geo had 2 son GH and Chas. They each had a son Charles Henry and later branches in ZA had a Charles in virtually every family.
It makes for interesting games sorting out who is related to who.
If soldiers Geo & Chas are correct (looks positive) it means that the Thatcham T's are related. A whole new book to explore.
I now have contact details for both KSLI and QLR-Fulwood Barracks. Will follow up.
If Ellen and baby Geo are not present at Fulwood in 1851, then this may mean that the family lived elsewhere, possibly back with her family in Limerick.
Did you only search the census at Fulwood or country-wide?
Ancestry.com list a death for Geo T in Preston in 1857, so if the same person, this would explain lack of evidence in 1861. The family are believed to have emigrated to South Africa about 1870.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Iria (or anyone)
I have found out that there was an 8 yr old Tidbury daughter (born Ireland) present during 1851. Does the census show her name and parent (Geo. or Chas.) or any other useful info?
Also, is there a William Henry Smith at Fulwood? GRO have a death reg for a Geo T. in 1857 and IGI have an Ellen T. marrying WHS in South Africa the same year. Did Geo die in service in SA and the widow marry another soldier, or is this only co-incidence? I have not been able to find anything on the SA side yet.
I have got hold of copy of Charles' military record from another researcher, but still need to find Geo's.
Any suggestions how to get hold of such records. I know that WO12 has the regimental muster records, but they run to thousands of periodical entries.
I will have to pay a visit to Kew, but finance & time constraints mean that I will have to have a clear idea of where to look.
Thanks again,
Eric-C

Hi all,
I now have some more info and more lookups needed.
In 1851 when Geo TIDBURY was at Fulwood, there was, at Preston, an Ellen SIDBURY, born Ireland about 1822. Also Mary A, 1844 Ire; Ellen, 1849 Ire; and Geo, 1850 Preston.
These would appear to be my 'looked for' family, with the surname mis-transcribed.
Can some kind soul please lookup to confirm these are one family and that the surname is in fact TIDBURY. Any info, address, etc will also be useful.
Thanks,
E-C

The query was answered by Daisypetal on the Hampshire page, Tidbury was mis-transcribed as Sidbury.
Unfortunately, it appears that Geo, Ellen and family had left England by 1861 as there is no further record of the family until Geo Jnr and his brother Chas appear in Cape Colony in the 1870's. I will just have to keep searching.

I see your posts are quite old, but I am a descendant of the DAUGHTER Ellen Tidbury, who was born circa. 1848 and then must have travelled out to south africa with her parents, where she married John Donnelly in 1864. Their daughter, Nellie Donnelly married Thomas Hanna in Fort Beaufort circa. 1885. So it looks like this is the same family? Any feedback on this would be useful.

Hi Jillalice, I am so pleased to hear from someone with connections to the Tidbury's that left England in the latter half of 1800's
We have lots of info on the brothers who settled in the Eastern Cape, but there is a gap from 1851 ENG Census, until they appear in the S. African records about 20-30 years later.
Do you have any information on who and how they came to SA. As you will see on earlier post, I have a death of Geo registered in Preston and a marriage of Ellen in SA both in 1857. No further info about these however.
There are other threads covering the brothers in SA and I am in contact with several branches of the family.
Looking forward to learning more.
Regards Eric
PS My wife, Julie is the Tidbury descendant not me.

Hi Eric
No, I'm afraid, before I saw your posts, I had nothing except Ellen Tidbury born 4/5/1848 and that she married John Donnelly 4/4/1864. I got this information from 2 Smith cousins.

Were these Smith on Ellen's line? there are smiths on Charles' line.
Do you have info on earlier generations.
My info on Ellen O'brien only goes back to her marriage to George T on 12 Jun 1842 at St Michael C of I, Limerick, Ireland. However no info on her parents.
On George's side I have the family in Thatcham, Berkshire and unconfirmed info back to the late 1600's

No, I see there were Smiths on Ellen's line, but not the same ones. Our Smiths come from William Smith who was an 1820 settler. But having gone through the 1820 settler site, I notice there were quite a few Smiths (not surprisingly!) who came out around that time.
No info yet on earlier generations.
